The Role of the Singers in Their Shifts

1 David, together with the captains of the army, set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, to prophesy with harps, lyres, and psalteries. This was the number of men who were able to do the work of their service.

2 Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of Asaph; they were in charge of Asaph, who prophesied under the hand of King David.

3 As for Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun were Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, and Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six; they were in charge of their father Jeduthun, to play the harps, and he prophesied, praising and giving thanks to the Lord.

4 As for Heman: the sons of Heman: Bukijah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romanti-ezer, Josbekasha, Mahlothi, Hothir, and Maazioth. 

5 All these were the sons of Heman, the king's seer in the words of God, to exalt the trumpet. God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. 

6 All these were beside their father in the song of the house of the Lord, with satires, lyres, and harps, for the service of the house of God. And beside the king were Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman. 

7 And the number of them, together with their brothers who were instructed in the song of the Lord, all of them teachers, was two hundred and eighty-eight. 

8 And they cast lots for the guard equally, both small and great, teacher and student. 

9 So the first lot came out for Asaph, namely, Joseph; the second for Gedaliah; he and his brothers and his sons, twelve in all.

10 The third for Zaccur, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

11 The fourth for Izri, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

12 The fifth for Nethaniah, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

13 The sixth for Bukijah, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

14 The seventh for Jesarelah, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

15 The eighth for Jeshaiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

16 The ninth for Mattaniah, his sons and his brothers, twelve.

17 The tenth for Shimei, his sons and his brothers, twelve. 18 The eleventh to Azareel, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

19 The twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

20 The thirteenth to Shubael, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

21 The fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

22 The fifteenth to Jerimoth, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

23 The sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

24 The seventeenth to Josbekashah, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

25 The eighteenth to Hanani, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

26 The nineteenth to Mahlothi, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

27 The twentieth to Eliathah, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

28 The twenty-first to Hothir, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

29 The twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

30 The twenty-third to Maazioth, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.

31 The twenty-fourth to Romanti-ezer, his sons, and his brothers; twelve.
