2 Take words with you, and return to the Lord; say to him, “Put away all iniquity, and receive good; and we will offer the sacrifices of our lips like calves.”

3 Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on horses, nor will we say to the work of our hands, “You are our God”; for in you the orphan finds mercy.

4 I will heal their backsliding; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them.

5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily and spread his roots like Lebanon.

6 Its branches will spread out, and its glory will be like that of the olive tree, its fragrance like Lebanon.

9 You have rebelled against me, Israel, to your destruction, against your helper.

10 Where is your king now, to guard you in all your cities? And your judges, of whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?

8 And the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed; thorns and thistles will grow on their altars; and they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

9 From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; there they remained; the battle in Gibeah against the sons of wickedness will not overtake them.

10 I will punish them according to my desire; and the peoples will gather against them, when I bind them to their transgressions.

3 They will not remain in the land of the Lord; but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and in Assyria they will eat unclean food.

4 They will not pour out wine before the Lord, nor will their offerings be pleasing to him: Their sacrifices will be like bread for silversmiths; all who eat of it will be unclean, for their bread will be for their appetite; it will not enter the house of the Lord.

5 What will you do on the day of the solemn assembly, and on the day of the feast of the Lord?

6 For, behold, they are gone because of destruction, but Egypt will gather them up, Memphis will bury them: the desirable silver will be inherited by nettles; thorns will be in their dwellings.

7 The days of visitation have come, the days of retribution have come; Israel will know it: the prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is a madman; because of the abundance of your iniquity it will also abound.

2 But they do not say in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness; now therefore their deeds surround them; they are before my face.

3 With their wickedness they make the king glad, and with their lies the princes.

4 They are all adulterers; they are like an oven lit by the baker, who ceases to kindle the fire from the time he kneads the dough until it is leavened.

5 And in the day of our king the princes became sick with the excitement of wine; he stretched out his hand with the scoffers.

6 For, like an oven, they applied their hearts, lying in wait; All night long their baker sleeps; in the morning he burns like a blazing fire.

7 They are all as hot as an oven, and they consume their judges; all their kings fall; there is no one among them who calls upon me.

1 Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

2 Only perjury, and lying, and murder, and theft, and adultery prevail, and there are murders upon murders.

3 Therefore the land will mourn, and everyone who dwells in it will languish, along with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away.

4 Yet let no one contend, let no one rebuke; for your people are like those who contend with the priest.

5 Therefore you will fall by day, and the prophet with you will fall by night, and I will destroy your mother.

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; Because you have rejected knowledge, I also have rejected you from being a priest before me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

7 As they multiplied, so they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame.

8 They feed on the sin of my people, and they crave their wickedness.

9 Therefore, as the people are, so shall the priest be; and I will visit upon him his ways, and I will repay him for his deeds.

10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall indulge in lust, but not multiply; because they have ceased to look to the Lord.

11 Incontinence, and wine, and new wine take away understanding.

12 My people consult their wooden idol, and their staff answers them, for the spirit of lust leads them astray, and they corrupt themselves, departing from the subjection of their God.

13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn incense on the hills, under the oak, the poplar, and the elm, because their shade is pleasant; therefore your daughters prostitute themselves, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.

14 I will not punish your daughters who prostitute themselves, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery; for they themselves go astray with prostitutes and sacrifice with harlots. Therefore, a people without understanding will be overthrown.

15 If you, Israel, want to corrupt yourselves, do not let Judah become guilty; do not go to Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-Aven, nor swear, saying, “As the Lord lives!”

16 For Israel has rebelled like a stubborn heifer; now the Lord will shepherd them like a lamb in a spacious place.

17 Ephraim is joined to idols; let him alone.

18 Their drink is gone; they are becoming more and more corrupt; surely their princes love shame.

19 A wind has enveloped them in its wings, and they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

4 Todavia, ninguém contenda, nem qualquer repreenda; porque o teu povo é como os que contendem com o sacerdote.

5 Por isso cairás de dia, e o profeta contigo cairá de noite, e destruirei a tua mãe.

11 A incontinência, e o vinho, e o mosto tiram a inteligência.

12 O meu povo consulta a sua madeira, e a sua vara lhe responde, porque o espírito de luxúria os engana, e eles se corrompem, apartando-se da sujeição do seu Deus.

13 Sacrificam sobre os cumes dos montes, e queimam incenso sobre os outeiros, debaixo do carvalho, e do álamo, e do olmeiro, porque é boa a sua sombra; por isso vossas filhas se prostituem, e as vossas noras adulteram.

14 Eu não castigarei vossas filhas, que se prostituem, nem vossas noras, quando adulteram; porque eles mesmos com as prostitutas se desviam, e com as meretrizes sacrificam: pois o povo que não tem entendimento será transtornado.

15 Se tu, ó Israel, queres corromper-te, não se faça culpado Judá; não venhais a Gilgal, e não subais a Bete-Áven, e não jureis, dizendo: Vive o Senhor.

16 Porque como uma vaca rebelde se rebelou Israel: agora o Senhor os apascentará como a um cordeiro num lugar espaçoso.

17 Efraim está entregue aos ídolos; deixa-o.

1 Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by her friend and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”

2 So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, a homer and a half of barley.

3 I said to her, “You will stay with me many days; you will not play the harlot, nor will you belong to another man. I want to be with you also.”

4 For the Israelites will remain many days without a king, without a prince, without a sacrifice, without an idol, without an ephod or teraphim.

5 Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king, and they will fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.
