Kings 17 The Widow of Zarephath

Kings 17

The Widow of Zarephath

- Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

- Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to provide for you.

- So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow woman was there gathering sticks. And he called to her, and said to her, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

- And when she went to fetch it, he called to her, and said to her, Bring me now also a morsel of bread in thy hand.

- But she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a cruse: and see, I have gathered two sticks, and I will prepare some for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

- Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go, do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it out to me; and then you shall make some for yourself and your son.

- For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: The barrel of meal shall not be used up, nor shall the cruse of oil run dry, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth."

- So she went and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and his household ate for many days.

- The barrel of meal did not run out, nor did the cruse of oil run dry, in accordance with the word of the Lord which he spoke through Elijah.

- And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and his sickness became so sore, that he could not breathe.

- And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O man of God? hast thou come unto me to call my iniquity to remembrance, and to kill my son?

- And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him upstairs into his own chamber, and laid him upon his bed.

- And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, have thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I dwell, by killing her son?

- And she stretched herself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's life come into him again.

- And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he lived.

- And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, See, your son lives.

- And the woman said to Elijah, By this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.
