David Divides the Priests into Twenty-Four Divisions

1 As for the sons of Aaron, these were their divisions: the sons of Aaron were Nadab, and Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.

2 Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no sons; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests.

3 And David divided them, and Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their office in their ministry.

4 And it was found that the sons of Eleazar among the heads of fathers' houses were more than the sons of Ithamar, when they were divided: of the sons of Eleazar sixteen heads of their fathers' houses, and of the sons of Ithamar, eight according to their fathers' houses.

5 And they divided them by lot, one with another; for there were rulers of the sanctuary and rulers of the house of God, both from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar.

6 And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel, the scribe of the Levites, registered them before the king and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers' houses among the priests and among the Levites: one of the fathers' houses was taken for Eleazar, and the other was taken for Ithamar. 7 And the first lot went out to Joiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

8 The third to Harim, the fourth to Sheorim,

9 The fifth to Malchiah, the sixth to Miamim,

10 The seventh to Hachoz, the eighth to Abijah,

11 The ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,

12 The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jachin,

13 The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14 The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

15 The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Hapises,

16 The nineteenth to Petaiah, the twentieth to Jeezekel,

17 The twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,

18 The twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

19 Their office in their ministry was to enter the house of the Lord, as they had been commanded by Aaron their father, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

20 And of the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jediiah.

21 As for Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah was the chief;

22 Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath;

23 And of the sons of Hebron, Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth;

24 Of the sons of Uzziel, Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir;

25 Micah's brother, Isshiah; of the sons of Isshiah, Zechariah; 

26 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; of the sons of Jaaziah: Beno; 

27 The sons of Merari: the sons of Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Hibri; 

28 Of Mahli: Eleazar; and he had no sons. 

29 As for Kish: of the sons of Kish: Jerahmeel; 

30 And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth: these were the sons of the Levites according to their fathers' houses. 

31 And they also cast lots likewise with their brethren the sons of Aaron before David the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers' houses among the priests and among the Levites: the head of the fathers' house and his youngest brother.
