The Book of the Prophet Nahum 1 The Justice and Mercy of God: The Destruction of His Enemies and the Deliverance of His People

The Book of the Prophet Nahum 1

The Justice and Mercy of God: The Destruction of His Enemies and the Deliverance of His People

The Burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is full of wrath; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and reserves wrath for his enemies.

The Lord is slow to anger and great in power; the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon fades.

The mountains tremble before him, and the hills melt; the earth heaves at his presence, the world and all who dwell in it.

Who can stand before his fury? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are shattered before him.

The Lord is good, a stronghold in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.

With an overwhelming flood he will make an end of its place, and darkness will pursue its enemies.

What do you plot against the Lord? He will make an end of you completely; affliction will not rise up a second time.

For though they are entangled like thorns and drunk as drunkards, they will be consumed like dry stubble.

From you has come one who plots evil against the Lord, a counselor of Belial.

This is what the Lord says: Though they are secure and numerous, they will be destroyed, and he will pass away. I have afflicted you, but I will afflict you no more.

But now I will break his yoke from off you, and I will burst your bonds.

But against you the Lord has given a command, that no one else of your name shall be sown; I will cut off from the house of your god the carved and cast images; there I will make your grave, for you are vile.

Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah, fulfill your vows; for the wicked shall no more come through you: he is utterly cut off.
