 The Book of the Prophet Micah 5

1 Now gather yourselves into troops, O daughter of troops; a siege will be laid against us; they will strike the judge of Israel on the cheek with a rod.

Prediction of the birth of the Messiah and the establishment of his kingdom

2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.

3 Therefore he will give them up until the time when she who is in labor gives birth; then the rest of his brothers will return with the people of Israel.

4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live forever, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.

5 And this shall be our peace: when Assyria comes into our land, and when it passes over our palaces, then we will raise against it seven shepherds, and eight princes from among men.

6 They shall consume the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod at its entrances. So shall he deliver us from Assyria, when it comes into our land, and when it treads upon our borders.

7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples, as the dew of the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, which waiteth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.

8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, which when it passes through shall trample and tear them in pieces, and there is none to deliver them.

9 Thy hand shall be lifted up against thine adversaries; and all thy enemies shall be cut off.

10 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and destroy thy chariots:

11 And I will destroy the cities of thy land, and overthrow all thy strongholds:

12 And I will take away the sorceries out of thy hand, and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:

13 And I will remove thy carved images and thy pillars out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more bow down unto the work of thy hands:

14 And I will remove thy groves out of the midst of thee, and destroy thy cities:

15 And in anger and in fury will I execute vengeance upon the nations that hear not.
