The Book of the Prophet Jonah 02
Jonah in the belly of the great fish; his prayer and his salvation
Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish.
He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me; from deep in Sheol I cried out, and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents surrounded me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; the deep engulfed me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the roots of the mountains; the earth’s bars closed over me forever; but you, Lord my God, delivered my life from destruction.”
When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit their own mercy.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you; I will make my vows good. Salvation comes from the Lord.
Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
