Job 38
God Answers Job and Shows Him His Greatness and Wisdom
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Now gird up your loins like a man; and I will demand of you, and answer me.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who has laid its measures, if you know? Or who has stretched the measuring line upon it?
On what are its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it overflowed and issued from its womb,
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling cloth?
When I passed my decree upon it, and set up its doors and bars,
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, and no further; and here shall thy swelling waves be broken?
Or hast thou commanded the dawn since thy days, or hast thou shown the dawn its place;
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
Everything is changed as clay under a seal, and put on as a garment;
And their light is withheld from the wicked, and the lofty arm is broken.
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea, or hast thou walked in the deepest depths?
Or have the gates of death been discovered unto thee, or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Or hast thou with understanding reached the breadth of the earth? Tell me, if thou knowest all this.
Where is the way where light dwells? And where is the darkness?
That you should bring it to its borders, and know the paths of its house?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and because the number of your days is great.
Or have you entered into the treasures of the snow, or seen the treasures of the hail,
Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?
Where is the way where the light is divided, and the east wind is scattered over the earth?
Who has made a channel for the flood, and a path for the lightnings of thunder?
To send rain on the land where there is no man, and on the wilderness where there is no man;
To satisfy the desolate and desolate land, and to cause the bud of grass to spring forth?
Does the rain have a father? Or who begets the drops of dew?
From whose womb comes the ice? Or who begets the hoarfrost of heaven?
As under a rock the waters are hidden, and the surface of the deep is congealed.
Can you gather together the delights of the seven stars? Or loose the bands of Orion?
Or bring forth the constellations in their season? Or guide the Bear with her cubs?
Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Or can you arrange their dominion on the earth?
Or can you utter your voice to the clouds, That an abundance of water may cover you?
Or can you command the lightnings to come forth, And say to you, Here we are?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can lower the bottles of heaven,
When the dust is melted into a lump, and the clods cling together?
Will you hunt prey for the lioness? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
When they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the covert?
Who provides food for the ravens, When their young cry to God, And wander about because they have no food?
