II Chronicles 34
Josiah Repairs the Temple. Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law
In the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purified the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city and Joah the son of Jehoahaz the recorder to repair the temple of the Lord his God.
They came to Hilkiah the high priest and gave the money that had been brought into the temple of the Lord, which the Levites who kept the door had collected from Manasseh, Ephraim and all the rest of Israel, as well as from all Judah and Benjamin. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
They gave it to those who had charge of the work and oversight of the temple of the Lord, and they gave it to those who did the work and labor in the temple of the Lord, to repair and repair the temple.
And they gave it to the foremen and builders, to buy hewn stone and timber for the joints, and to repair the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
And these men did the work faithfully; and the overseers over them were Joath and Obadiah, Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites, to advance the work, and other Levites, all who were skilled in musical instruments.
And they were over the burdenbearers and overseers of all who did any work; and of the Levites were the scribes, and the officers, and the gatekeepers.
And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
And they were in charge of the work, and of the workmen ... and of the workmen, and of the workmen and of the workmen and of the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the workmen and the work 15 Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord." Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.
Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported to the king, saying, "Your servants have done everything they were told to do."
They gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord and gave it to the overseers and to those who did the work.
Shaphan the scribe told the king, "Hilkiah the priest gave me a book." Shaphan read from it before the king.
When the king heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes.
Then the king sent Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king's minister, saying,
"Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah about the words of this book that has been found, for the wrath of the Lord is great and has been poured out on us, because our fathers did not keep the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book."
