Job 02 Job's Adversity and Cruel Affliction

 Job 02

Job's Adversity and Cruel Affliction

On another day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.

Then the Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the Lord and said, "From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it."

Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil, and who still holds fast to his integrity, and yet you incited me against him to destroy him without cause."

Then Satan answered the Lord and said, "Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give in exchange for his life."

But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.

And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your power; but spare his life."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with a sore from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

And Job took a piece of tile to scrape off the sores, and sat down in the ashes.

Then his wife said to him, "Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die."

But he said to her, "You speak like one of the foolish women. We shall receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all the evil that had come upon him, they came each from his place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Namathite. And they agreed together to come and comfort him and to comfort him.

And when they lifted up their eyes from afar, and recognized him not, they lifted up their voices and wept; and they tore each of their garments from over their heads, and threw dust into the air.

And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and no one spoke a word to him, because they saw that his grief was very great.
