Job 01 Job's Virtue, Temptation, and Losses

 Job 01

Job's Virtue, Temptation, and Losses

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and he was a blameless man, and an upright man, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

And his livestock were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses; and he had very many servants, so that he was the greatest of all the men of the east.

And his sons went and held feasts in their houses, each on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

And it came to pass, when the days of their feasting were completed, that Job would send and sanctify them, and would rise early in the morning, and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.”

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil.”

Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

Have you not surrounded him and his household and all that he has with good things? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock has increased in the land.

But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face!

And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not stretch out your hand." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

And it came to pass on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

That a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were feeding beside them;

And, behold, the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away, and they slew the young men with the edge of the sword; and I only have escaped to tell the news."

While he was still speaking, another came and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

While he was still speaking, another came and said, "The Chaldeans set up three bands and attacked the camels and took them away, and they killed the servants with the edge of the sword; but I alone have escaped to tell you."

While he was still speaking, another came and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the ground, and worshipped.

And he said, Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God with wrong.
