Psalms 69 David's sufferings prefigure those of the Messiah

 Psalms 69

David's sufferings prefigure those of the Messiah

Deliver me, O God, for the waters have come in to my soul.

I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing; I have gone into the depths of the waters, where the stream sweeps me away.

I am weary with crying out; my throat is dried up; my eyes fail while waiting for my God.

Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; those who seek me out are mighty; they are my enemies wrongfully; then restore what I did not steal.

You, O God, know my foolishness; my sins are not hidden from you.

Let not those who wait for you be put to shame because of me, O Lord, the LORD of hosts; let not those who seek you be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.

For your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face.

I have become a stranger to my brothers, and an alien to my mother's children.

For zeal for your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

I have wept and chastened my soul with fasting, but even this has become a reproach to me.

I have put on sackcloth and have become a byword to them.

Those who sit in the gate speak against me; I am the song of those who drink strong drink.

But I make my prayer to you, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, hear me in the multitude of your mercy, in the truth of your salvation.

Draw me out of the mire, and do not let me sink; let me be rescued from those who hate me, from the depths of the waters.

Let not the floods sweep me away, nor the deep swallow me up, nor let the pit close its mouth over me.

Hear me, O Lord, for your mercy is good; look upon me according to the greatness of your compassion.

And hide not your face from your servant, for I am in trouble; answer me quickly.

Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies.

You know my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor; all my adversaries are before you.

Reproach has broken my heart, and I am very faint; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

They gave me gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Let their table become a snare before them, and their full reward a ruin.

Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and let their loins tremble continually.

Pour out your wrath upon them, and let your fierce anger take hold of them.

Let their palace be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents.

For they persecute those you have afflicted, and talk of the grief of those you have struck.

Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not come into your righteousness.

Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.

But I am afflicted and sorrowful: let your salvation, O God, set me on high.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and magnify him with thanksgiving.

This will please the Lord more than an ox or a calf that has horns and hoofs.

The meek will see it and be glad; your hearts will live, because you seek God.

For the Lord hears the needy, and does not despise his captives.

Let the heavens and the earth praise him, the seas, and everything that moves in them.

For God will save Zion, and will build new cities in Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it.

And the seed of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell in it.
