Psalms 59
David pleads with God to deliver him, and pleads his innocence
Deliver me, my God, from my enemies; defend me from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men.
For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty are gathered together against me, without my transgression or my sin, O Lord.
They run and prepare themselves, without my guilt; awake to help me, and look.
But you, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the nations; have no mercy on any of the treacherous workers of iniquity.
They return at evening; they howl like dogs, going around the city.
Behold, they cry out with their mouths; swords are in their lips; for who will listen?
But you, O Lord, will laugh at them; you will mock all the nations.
Because of their strength I will wait for you; for God is my high defense.
The God of my mercy will warn me; God will show me my desire on my enemies.
Do not kill them, lest my people forget; scatter them by your power and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.
For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them be taken in their pride; and for the curses and lies they utter.
Consume them in your wrath, consume them so that they are no more; that they may know that God reigns in Jacob to the ends of the earth.
And they will come again at evening, and howl like dogs, going around the city.
Let them wander about looking for food, and spend the night without being satisfied.
But I will sing of your strength; in the morning I will sing aloud of your love, for you have been my stronghold, my refuge in the day of my trouble.
To you, my strength, I will sing praises; for God is my defense, the God of my mercy.
