Psalm 81
God rebukes Israel for its ingratitude and rebellion
Sing aloud to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob.
Take the psaltery, and bring the timbrel, the pleasant harp and the lute.
Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the time appointed for our solemn feast.
For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
He commanded it in Joseph as a testimony when he went out against the land of Egypt, where I heard a language I did not understand.
I took the burden from his shoulders; his hands were freed from the baskets.
You cried out in trouble, and I saved you; I answered you from the hiding place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Hear me, my people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if you had listened to me!
There shall be no strange god among you, nor shall you bow down to a strange god.
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
But my people would not listen to my voice, and Israel would not accept me.
So I gave them over to their own hearts' desires, and they walked in their own counsels.
Oh, that my people had listened to me! That Israel would walk in my ways!
Soon I would subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their foes.
Those who hate the Lord would have submitted to him, and his days would have lasted forever.
I would feed them with the finest of the wheat and satisfy them with honey from the rock.
