Numbers 27
The law on inheritance
And the daughters of Sophphad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Marquir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: these are the names of his daughters: Macla, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah);
And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes, and before all the congregation, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
Our father died in the wilderness, and was not among the congregation of them that gather themselves against the Lord in the congregation of Korah: but he died in his own sin, and had no children.
Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no children? Give us possession among our father's brothers.
And Moses brought his case before the Lord.
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
The daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly: Ye shall surely give them an inheritance among the brethren of their father; and the inheritance of his father shall bring them to pass.
And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, When a man dies, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass over unto his daughter.
And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
But if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
And if your father also has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to a relative, to him who is nearer to his family, to possess it: it shall be to the children of Israel by statute of law, as the Lord commanded Moses
