The Israelites sin with the daughters of Moab
1 And Israel tarried at Shittim, and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.
2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
3 And when Israel was joined to Baal-peor, the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them before Jehovah before the sun, and the fierce anger of Jehovah shall withdraw from Israel.
5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Let every man kill his men that are gathered unto Baal-peor.
6 And, behold, there came a man of the children of Israel, and brought unto his brethren a Midianite before the eyes of Moses and of all the congregation of the children of Israel, weeping before the tabernacle of the congregation.
7 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, arose in the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;
8 And he went after the Israelite man unto the tent, and passed them both to the man of Israel and to the woman, by his belly: And the plague ceased from off the children of Israel.
9 And they that died of the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
11 Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, turned away my wrath from the children of Israel, because he kept my zeal in the midst of them; so that in my heart I have not consumed the children of Israel.
12 Therefore say, Behold, I give unto you my covenant of peace,
13 And he, and his seed after him, shall have the covenant of the everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14 And the name of the dead Israelite, which was slain with the Midianite, was Zinri the son of Shallu, the ruler of the house of the Simeonites.
15 And the name of the Midianite woman was Cosbi the daughter of Zur, the head of the people of the father's house among the Midianites.
16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
17 You shall afflict the Midianites, and shall smite them,
18 For they afflicted you with their deceitings, and they deceived you in the business of Peor, and in the business of Cosbi, the daughter of the chief of the Midianites, their sister, who was slain in the day of the plague in the business of Peor.
