The humble supplication of Judah
And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? we will talk? and how shall we clear ourselves? God found iniquity of thy servants; behold, we are slaves to my lord, both we and the one whose hand was found the cup.
But he said it far from me that I should do; the man in whose hand the cup is found, it shall be my servant; but ye up in peace to your father.
Then Judah came near to him, and said, Alas! my lord, let, I pray thee, thy servant speak a word in the ears of my lord, and do not let your anger burn against thy servant; for thou art as Pharaoh.
My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
And we said unto my lord, We have an old father and a young man of his age, the youngest, whose brother is dead; and it was only his mother, and his father loves him.
Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.
And we said unto my lord, The lad can not leave his father; let his father would die.
Then you said to your servants, If your youngest brother come down with you, never see my face.
And it happened when we came up unto thy servant my father, and told him the words of my lord,
And our father said: Go again, buy us a little food.
And we said, we can not go down, but if our youngest brother is with us, we will go down; because we can not see the face of the man if our youngest brother is with us.
Then he told us thy servant my father, Ye know that my wife gave me two sons;
And one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn to pieces, and I have not seen so far;
If now also tirardes this from my face, and you, happen a disaster, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us, as your soul is bound up with his soul,
It will happen that when he saw that the lad is not, he will die; and thy servants will bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
For thy servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If not to make, I will blame my father every day.
Now therefore, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a slave to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.
For as I go up into my father, and the lad be not with me? lest I see the evil that shall come on my father.
