The descendants of Jacob in Egypt
1 These therefore are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; each came with his household:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 All souls as that held the Jacob's thigh, were seventy souls; Joseph however was in Egypt.
6 As for Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7 The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; so that the land was filled with them.
8 Then arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph;
9 And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel is very large, and more powerful than us.
10 Come, let us deal wisely with him, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, coming war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and go up the land.
11 And they set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Ramassés.
12 But the more i afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew; so they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with harshness;
14 So they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar and brick, and in all the work of the field; with all their service, in which they served harshly.
