The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 24
Prediction of the Ruin of Jerusalem
The word of the Lord came to me:
“Son of man, I am about to take away from you the desire of your eyes with a single blow. Yet you will not mourn or weep or shed tears.
Refrain from groaning; do not mourn for the dead. Put on your turban and your sandals. Do not wrap yourself up or eat human bread.”
In the morning I spoke to the people, and in the evening my wife died. In the morning I did as I was commanded.
The people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things you are doing mean?”
I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying…”
Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the glory of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and the delight of your souls; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.
And you shall do as I have done: you shall not veil yourselves, nor eat the bread of men.
And you shall have your turbans on your heads, and your sandals on your feet; you shall not lament nor weep, but you shall waste away in your iniquities, and groan one to another.
Thus shall Ezekiel be a sign to you; according to all that he did you shall do: and when this happens, then you shall know that I am the Lord God.
And as for you, son of man, will it not happen that, on the day I take away their stronghold, the joy of their adornment, the desire of their eyes, and the longing of their souls, their sons and their daughters,
On that day will someone who escapes come to you, to make you hear with your ears?
On that day your mouth will be opened to the one who escapes, and you will speak, and you will no longer be silent; so you will become a marvelous sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.
