The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 24
The Parable of the Pot
The word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, saying:
“Son of man, write the name of this day, this very day, for the king of Babylon is approaching Jerusalem on this very day.
And use a parable for the rebellious house, and say to them: ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Put the pot on the fire, put it on, and pour water into it.
Gather into it the choicest pieces, all the choicest pieces, the legs and the shoulders, fill it with choice bones.
Take the best of the flock, and burn the bones under it; boil it thoroughly, and let its bones be cooked inside it.
Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot that foams, and whose foam does not go out of it! Take it out piece by piece, let no lot fall upon it;
For her blood is in the midst of her; she has set it upon a bare rock; she has not poured it out upon the ground, to cover it with dust.
To stir up indignation, to take vengeance, I have set her blood upon a bare rock, that it may not be covered.
Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city! I also will make a great fire.
Heap much wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and season it with spices, and let the bones burn.
Then thou shalt set it empty upon its coals, that it may heat up, and its rust may burn away, and its filthiness may sink in within it, and its scum may be consumed.
It is weary of vanity; and its great scum has not gone out of it; its scum shall go into the fire.
Your uncleanness is your infamy, for I have cleansed you, but you have not cleansed yourself; you will never again be cleansed from your uncleanness until I cause my indignation to rest upon you.
I, the Lord, have said: It will be so, and I will do it; I will not turn back, nor will I spare, nor will I repent; according to your ways and according to your deeds you will be judged, says the Lord God.
