The Book of the Prophet Isaiah 46
The Fall of the Idols of Babylon
Bel is brought low, Nebo is bowed down; their idols are set on animals, on beasts: the burdens of your loads are a weariness to the weary beasts.
They bowed down together and were brought low; they could not free themselves from the burden, but their soul went into captivity.
Hear me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, you whom I carried in my arms from the womb, and bore from the birth.
Even to your old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you; I have made you, and I will carry you, and I will keep you.
To whom will you liken me? Or what will you compare me to? Or what will you compare me to, that we may be alike?
They lavish gold from the purse and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith, and he makes a god, and they bow down and worship it.
They lift it onto their shoulders, carry it, and set it in its place; there it stands, from its place it does not move; and if they cry out to it, it gives no answer, nor does it deliver anyone from their trouble.
Remember this, and take heart; take it back to heart, you transgressors.
Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is no other; there is none like me.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure”;
I call a bird of prey from the east, and the man of my counsel from a far country; for I have spoken, and it shall come to pass; I have purposed, and I will also do it.
Hear me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from righteousness.
I will bring near my righteousness, it will not be far off, and my salvation will not delay; I will establish salvation in Zion, and my glory in Israel.
