Samuel 30
David chases the Amalekites and frees the captives
And David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Achimelech, Bring me, I pray thee, here the ephod. And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
Then David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I persecute this host? will I reach her? And the Lord said to him: Persecute her, for surely you will overtake her, and deliver everything.
So David, he and the six hundred men that were with him, departed, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stopped.
And David followed them, he and the four hundred men, for two hundred men were left behind, because they were not able, because they were weary, who were passing over the brook of Besor.
And they found an Egyptian man in the field, and brought him to David: they gave him bread, and he ate, and gave him water to drink.
And they gave him a piece of dried fig dough and two bunches of raisins, and he ate, and his spirit returned, because for three days and three nights he had not eaten bread or drunk water.
Then David said to him, Whose are you, and where are you from? And the Egyptian boy said, I am the servant of an Amalekite man, and my lord has left me, because I was sick three days ago.
We spurred on towards the south side of the Cherenites and towards the side of Judah, and towards the south side of Caleb, and set Shiklag on fire.
And David said to him, Could you, coming down, lead me to that troop? And he said unto him, By God swear unto me that thou shalt not kill me, neither shalt thou deliver me into my lord's hand;
And going down, he led him; and, behold, they were scattered over the face of all the earth, eating and drinking and dancing, through all that great spoil which they took from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.
And David smote them from the twilight until the evening of the next day, and none of them escaped, save the four hundred young men who, riding on camels, fled.
So David delivered all that the Amalekites took: his two wives also delivered David.
And they lacked none, from the least to the greatest, and even the sons and daughters; and also from the spoil to all that they had taken from them, all David brought back.
And David took all the sheep and herds, and led them before the other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.
And when David came to the two hundred men, who were weary and could not follow David, and who left to stay in the brook Besor, they went out to meet David and the people who came with him: and when David drew nigh to the people , greeted them in peace.
