II Samuel 01
David's weeping for Saul and Jonathan
And David lamented to Saul and to Jonathan his son, with this lamentation:
(As he told them to teach the children of Judah how to use the bow. Behold, it is written in the book of Recto):
Ah, ornament of Israel! in thy heights I was wounded: how the mighty fell!
Do not report it in Gath, do not publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised leap for joy.
Ye mountains of Gilboa, neither dew nor rain fall on you, nor on you heaves of offering, for woe the shield of the mighty, the shield of Saul, was cast down contemptibly, as though it had not been anointed with oil.
From the blood of the wounded, from the fat of the mighty, he never drew back Jonathan's bow, nor did Saul's sword return empty.
Saul and Jonathan, so beloved and dear in his life, did not separate in his death either: they were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
Ye daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet in delight, who made you wear ornaments of gold upon your garments.
How the mighty fell in the midst of the battle! Jonathan in your high places was wounded.
I am in anguish for you, my brother Jonathan; how most amiable you were to me! more wonderful was your love to me than the love of women.
How the mighty fell, and the weapons of war perished!
