The Book of the Prophet Amos 4

The Book of the Prophet Amos 4

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your masters, “Bring us something to drink!”

The Lord God has sworn by his holiness that the days are coming upon you when you will be taken away with hooks, and your descendants with fishing hooks.

You will go out through the breaches, one after another, and you will be driven to Hermon, declares the Lord.

Go to Bethel and transgress; to Gilgal and multiply transgressions; bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days.

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leavened bread, and proclaim freewill offerings; publish them, for this is what you love, O children of Israel, declares the Lord God.

Therefore I also gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

Moreover, I withheld rain from you, even three months before the harvest; I made it rain on one city, and on another city I did not make it rain; on one field it rained, but the other, on which it did not rain, withered.

And two or three cities wandered, going to another city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

I struck you with blight and mildew; the multitude of your gardens and your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees, the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

I sent plague among you, like Egypt: I killed your young men with the sword, and let your horses be taken captive, and I made the stench of your armies rise into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

I overthrew some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a brand snatched from the burning; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel! And because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel.

For he is the one who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares to man his thoughts, who turns the morning into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth—the Lord, the God of hosts, is his name.
