Kings 12
Ten Tribes Follow Jeroboam
- When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered him again, saying, "What portion have we in David? And there is no inheritance for us in the son of Jesse. Your tents, O Israel, have gone to their tents."
- But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
- Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute, and all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. But King Rehoboam dared to get into his chariot to flee from Jerusalem.
- So the Israelites have separated themselves from the house of David to this day.
- And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent and summoned him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: and none followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
- And Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, and gathered together all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, that were fit for war, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
- And the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
- Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah, and to Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
- Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house, for I have done this work. And they hearkened to the word of the Lord, and returned according to the word of the Lord.
- Then Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount Ephraim, and dwelt there; and he went out from there, and built Penuel.
