The Israelites are defeated because of Achan's sin.
And the children of Israel trespassed in their anathema: For Achan the son of Carmi the son of Zabdi the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah took of the anathema, and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
And Joshua sent from Jericho some men unto Ai, which is by Bethabeth, from the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Come up and spy out the land. So the men went up and spied on Ai.
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; Let some two thousand, or three thousand men, go up to smite Ai: Do not contend there to all the people, for there are few.
And there went up from the people there three thousand men, and they fled before the men of Ai.
And the men of Ai smote them some thirty-six, and followed them from the gate unto Sebarim, and smote them in the descent; and the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, and he and the elders of Israel: and they put dust upon their heads.
And Joshua said, Oh Lord Jehovah! Why indeed have you brought this people over Jordan to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to make us perish? If only we were content to stay beyond the Jordan.
Ah! Sir! what shall I say? For Israel has turned away from her enemies!
And when the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land hear this, they shall surround us, and cut off our name from the earth, and then what shall you do to your great name?
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Arise, Why art thou therefore prostrate upon his face?
Israel have sinned, and have even transgressed my covenant which they commanded them, and have taken away the anathema, and have also stolen and lied, and have even laid it under their baggage.
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies: they turned their backs before their enemies; because they are cursed: I will no longer be with you, unless you root out the anathema from among you.
Arise, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow: for thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, Anathema is in the midst of thee, Israel: before thy enemies thou shalt not stand, until take away the anathema from among you.
Tomorrow ye shall come near according to your tribes: and the tribe which Jehovah shall take shall come near according to families; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come near to houses; and the house which the LORD shall take shall come near man by man.
And he that is taken with the anathema shall be burned with fire, he and all that he hath, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and has done madness in Israel.
And Joshua rose early in the morning, and brought Israel according to their tribes: and the tribe of Judah was taken:
And when he brought the tribe of Judah, he took the family of Zarqui: and when the family of Zarqui came, man by man, Zabdi was taken.
And when Achan the son of Carmi the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, came to his house, he took him.
And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what you have done, do not hide it from me.
And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Truly I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and have done so and so.
And when I saw among the spoil a good Babylonian garment, and two hundred cycles of silver, and a golden wedge weighing fifty shekels, I desired them, and took them: and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent; and the silver under it.
And Joshua sent messengers, which came running into the tent: and, behold, all things were hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
And they took those things from the midst of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them before the LORD.
And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the robe, and the golden wedge, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses. and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; And they brought them into the valley of Acor.
And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord will trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.
And they lifted up upon him a great heap of stones unto this day. Thus the LORD became from the fierceness of his anger: therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Acor unto this day.
