The circumcision of the children of Israel
1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites that dwelt in this west side of the Jordan heard, and all the kings of the Canaanites that were by the sea, that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children. From Israel until we passed, their hearts were melted, and there was no encouragement in them because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, Make knives of stone, and circumcise the children of Israel a second time.
3 And Joshua made stone knives for himself, and circumcised the children of Israel in the mountain of foreskins.
4 And this is why Joshua circumcised them: all the people that came out of Egypt, the men, all the men of war, were already slain in the wilderness by the way after they came out of Egypt.
5 For all the people that came out were circumcised, but none of the people who were born in the wilderness by the way after they had come out of Egypt had been circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until the whole nation was gone, the men of war, who came out of Egypt, who did not obey the voice of the LORD, whom the LORD had sworn he would not let them see. the land which the Lord had sworn to his fathers to give us; land flowing with milk and honey.
7 But in his stead he set his sons; To this Joshua circumcised: Because they were uncircumcised, because they circumcised them not in the way.
8 And it came to pass that when they had circumcised all the nation, they remained in their stead in the camp, until they were healed.
9 And Jehovah said to Joshua, This day I have turned the reproach of Egypt from upon you. Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal unto this day.
