II Samuel 23
The thirty-seven mighty men that David had
These are the names of the mighty men that David had: Joseb-Bashebeth, son of Taquemoni, the chief of captains: this was Adino the Snite, who opposed eight hundred, and smote them at once.
And after him Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the son of Aoi, among the three mighty men who were with David when they provoked the Philistines who were gathered there to battle, and when the men of Israel went up.
He arose, and smote the Philistines, until his hand was weary, and his hand was cleaved to the sword: and that day the Lord wrought a great deliverance; and the people turned back after him, only to take the spoil.
And after him Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite, when the Philistines were gathered together in a multitude, where there was a piece of land full of lentils, and the people fled from before the Philistines.
So he stood in the midst of that piece of land, and defended it, and smote the Philistines: and the Lord wrought a great deliverance.
Also three of the thirty heads went down, and came in the time of harvest to David, to the cave of Adullam: and the multitude of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.
David was then in a stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.
And David longed, and said, O that I could drink of the water of the cistern of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
Then those three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the cistern of Bethlehem, which is by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David; but he would not drink it but poured it out before the Lord.
And he said, Guard me, O Lord, from doing so; would I drink the blood of men who risked their lives? So I didn't want to drink it: that's what those three brave ones did.
Also Abishai, brother of Joab, son of Zuruia, was head of three; and he raised his spear against three hundred, and smote them, and had the name among the three.
Was he not the noblest of these three? For he was the first of them; but to the first three it did not arrive.
Also Benaiah, son of Joiada, son of a mighty man of Cabseel, great in works, he slew two mighty lions of Moab; and he went down, and smote a lion in the midst of a pit, in the time of snow.
He also slew an Egyptian man, a man of honor: and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear, but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.
These things did Banaiah the son of Jehoiada, for which he was named among three mighty men.
Of the thirty he was the noblest, yet he did not approach the first three: and David made him over his guards.
Asahel, Joab's brother, was among the thirty, who were: Elhanan, son of Dodo, from Bethlehem;
Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite;
Helles the Palthite, Ira the son of Ichish the Tekoite;
Abiezer, an Anotite; Mebunai, Husatite;
Zalmon the Ahite; Maarai, Netophatite;
Heleb, son of Baena, a Netophathite; Etai, son of Ribai, from Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin;
Benaiah, a Pirathonite, Hidai, from the brook Gaash;
Abi-Albon the Arbatite, Azmaveth the Barumite;
Eliaba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashem; and Jonathan;
Shammah the Hararite; Ahiam, son of Sarar, Ararite;
Eliphelet, son of Asbai, son of a Maacathite; Elião, son of Achitofel, a Gilonite;
Hezrai, Carmelite, Paarai, arbite:
Igal the son of Nathan, from Zobah, Baní the Dadita;
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, who bore the weapons of Joab the son of Zeruiah;
Wrath, jetrite; Gareb, jetrite;
Uriah the Hittite; thirty-seven for all.
