Servitude under the Medianites
1 But the children of Israel did what seemed evil in the eyes of the Lord: and the Lord gave them into the hands of the Midianites for seven years.
2 And when the Medianites prevailed over Israel, the children of Israel made themselves, for the Midianites, the pits in the mountains, and the caves and the fortifications.
3 For it happened that the Israelites and the Amalekites went up to sow Israel; and those of the East against him also went up.
4 And they went against them in the field, and destroyed the newness of the land, until they reached Gaza: and they left no food in Israel, neither sheep, nor oxen, nor donkeys.
5 For they went up with their cattle and tents; they came like locusts, in so many crowds that they could not be counted, neither they nor their camels: and they entered the land to destroy it.
6 So Israel was greatly impoverished by the presence of the Midianites: so the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.
7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites,
8 The Lord sent a man a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: From Egypt I brought you up, and brought you out of the house of bondage;
9 And I saved you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who oppressed you; and expelled them from before you, and gave you your land;
10 And I said to you, I am the Lord your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell: but you have not listened to my voice.
