Servitude of the Israelites under Kushan, king of Syria or Aran
1 These are the nations that the Lord has left to prove Israel to them, namely, to all who did not know of all the wars in Canaan:
2 Only so that the generations of the children of Israel would know [to teach them war], at least those who did not know it before:
3 Five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and Sidonians, and Hadus, who dwelt in the mountains of Lebanon, from Mount Baal-Hermon to the road to Hamath.
4 These therefore remained, to prove Israel to them, to know whether they would heed the commandments of the Lord, which he had commanded their fathers, by the ministry of Moses.
5 So the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites; and Ferezeus, and Hivites, and Jebusites,
6 They took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their sons their daughters, and served their gods.
7 And the children of Israel did what seemed evil in the eyes of the Lord, and they forgot the Lord their God: and served the Balains and Astarote.
8 Then the Lord's wrath was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Risataim, king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cusan-Risataim eight years.
