The cities of the Levites
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho, saying,
2 Command the children of Israel to give cities of the inheritance of their possession to the Levites, that they may dwell in it: and to the Levites you shall give the suburbs round about them.
3 And these cities shall dwell to dwell in them: but their commotions shall be for their cattle, and for their cattle, and for all their cattle.
4 And the cities that ye shall give to the Levites, from the wall of the city and outward, shall be a thousand cubits round about.
5 And out of the city of the east, thou shalt measure two thousand cubits, and the south side two thousand cubits, and the west side two thousand cubits, and the north side two thousand cubits, and the city in the midst: it shall be for the suburbs of the cities.
6 And of the cities, which ye shall give to the Levites, there shall be six cities of refuge, which ye shall give, that the murderer may take refuge therein: and ye shall give them forty cities unto them.
7 And all the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities, and their cities.
8 And the cities which thou shalt give of the inheritance of the children of Israel, of the many that have a great multitude, and of that which hath little, ye shall take little: every man shall give of the cities of the Levites according to the inheritance which he shall inherit.
