Deuteronomy 01 The discourse of Moses in the plain of the Jordan

Deuteronomy 01
The discourse of Moses in the plain of the Jordan
These are the words of Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the wilderness, on the plain opposite the Sea of Sufe, between Paran Tofel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizaabe.
Eleven days' journey from Horeb, the way of the mountain of Seir, unto Kadesh-barnea.
And it came to pass in the four and twentieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded them concerning them.
And he smote Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, which dwelt in Ashtaroth in Edrei.
Out of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,
And the LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Surely ye have been in this mountain.
Return, and go and go to the mountain of the Amorites, and all their neighbors, to the plain, and to the mountain, and to the valley, and to the south, and to the brook of the sea;to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, to the great river, the Euphrates.
Behold this land, I have given it before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them and their seed after them.
And at the same time I spake unto you, saying, I will not be able to take you.
The Lord your God has multiplied you: and, behold, ye are now as the stars of the heavens in multitude.
May the Lord God of your fathers increase you, as you are, a thousand times more, and bless you as he has spoken to you.
How shall I bear only your pestilences, and your burdens, and your differences?
Take ye wise and understanding men among your tribes, that he may set them on your heads.
And ye answered me, and said, It is good to do the word which thou hast spoken.
And I have taken the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and have made them heads of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifty, captains of ten, and rulers of your tribes.
And at the same time I sent your judges, saying, Hear the cause among your brethren, and judge between the man and his brother, and between the stranger that is with him.
Thou shalt not hearken unto any person in judgment, but ye shall hear the small as the great: Ye shall not fear the face of any man: for the judgment is of God; but the cause that is difficult for you will bring to me, and I will hear it.
So at that time I commanded you all things that ye should do.
And we departed from Horeb, and walked through all that great and great wilderness which thou sawest, by the way of the mountains of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us: and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountains of the Amorites, which the Lord our God will give us.
Behold, the LORD thy God hath given thee this land before thee: go up, possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath spoken unto thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
Then all of you came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us, that the earth may spy upon us, and give us answers, by which ways we should go up to it, and to what city we should go.
So this thing pleased me: so that I took of you twelve men out of every tribe a man.
And they went and went up into the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied him.
And they took of the fruit of the ground in their hands, and brought it to us, and answered us again, and said, Good is the land which the LORD our God giveth us.
But ye would not go up; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD our God.
And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hath borne us, he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.
Where shall we go up? our brethren have caused our hearts to melt, saying, Greater and greater is the people than we are: the cities are great and fortified to the heavens: and we have seen also the sons of the giants.
Then I said to you, Do not be afraid or fear them.
The Lord your God who goes before you will fight, according to all that he has done with you before your eyes in Egypt;
As also in the wilderness, where thou hast seen the Lord thy God in him as a man beareth his son, in all the way that thou hast walked, till thou comest to this place.
But you did not believe the Lord your God.
Who went before you all the way, to find the place where you should camp: by night in the fire, to show you the way by which you should go, and by day in the cloud.
And when the LORD heard the voice of your words, he was wroth, and sware, saying,
None of the men of this evil generation shall see this good land which I swore to give to your fathers.
Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he will see it, and the land which he has trodden I will give to him and to his sons: for he hath persevered in following the Lord.
And the LORD was angry with me because of you, saying, You also shall not go in there.
And Joshua the son of Nun, standing before thee, he shall go in there: make haste, for he shall cause her to inherit Israel.
And your children, of whom ye said, They shall be for a prey: and your children, who do not like this day, neither shall they know: they shall go in there, and I will give them to them, and they shall possess it.
But you turned and went into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
And ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah: we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God hath commanded us: and ye have armed yourselves every one of his instruments of war, and ye are about to rise the mountain.
And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight: for I am not among you; lest you be smitten before your enemies.
But when I spoke to you, you did not hear; you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and were proud, and went up into the mountain.
And the Amorites, who dwelt in that mountain, went out to meet you; and they persecuted you as the bees do, and beat you from Seir to Hormá.
And when ye returned and wept before the LORD, the LORD did not listen to your voice, nor did he listen to you.
So you were in Kadesh many days, according to the days you were there.
