David Wants to Build the Temple, but God Does Not Allow It

1 Now it happened, while David was living in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I live in a house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under curtains."

2 Then Nathan said to David, "Do whatever is in your heart, for God is with you."

3 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

4 Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord: You shall not build me a house to dwell in,

5 For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up Israel until this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from one tabernacle to another.

6 6 Wherever I have walked with all Israel, have I spoken a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, ‘Why do you not build me a house of cedar?’

7 Now therefore thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people Israel.

8 And I have been with you everywhere you went, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you, and I have made you a name like the name of the great men who are in the earth.

9 And I have appointed a place for my people Israel, and I have planted them, that they may dwell in their own place, and they shall no more be removed from one place to another; neither shall the children of wickedness weaken them any more, as at the first.

10 And since the days that I appointed judges over my people Israel, but I have subdued all your enemies. I have also made known to you that the Lord would build you a house.

11 And it shall come to pass, when your days are fulfilled that you should go to your fathers, that I will raise up your seed after you, which shall be of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom.

12 He shall build the house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.

13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son; and I will not take away my kindness from him, as I took it from those who were before you.

14 But I will establish him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.

15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

Davi deseja edificar o templo, mas Deus não permiti

1 Sucedeu pois que, morando Davi já em sua casa, disse Davi ao profeta Natã: Eis que moro em casa de cedros, mas a arca do concerto do Senhor está debaixo de cortinas.

2 Então Natã disse a Davi: Tudo quanto tens no teu coração, faze, porque Deus é contigo.

3 Mas sucedeu, na mesma noite, que a palavra do Senhor veio a Natã, dizendo:

4 Vai e dize a Davi meu servo: Assim diz o Senhor: Tu  me não edificarás uma casa para morar,

5 Porque em casa nenhuma morei, desde o dia em que fiz subir a Israel, até ao dia de hoje; mas fui de tenda em tenda, e de tabernáculo em tabernáculo.

6 Por todas as partes por onde andei com todo o Israel, porventura falei alguma palavra a algum dos juízes de Israel, a quem ordenei que apascentasse o meu povo, dizendo: Por que me não edificais uma casa de cedros?

7 Agora pois assim dirás a meu servo, a Davi: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eu te tirei do curral, de detrás das ovelhas, para que fosses chefe do meu povo Israel.

8 E estive contigo por toda a parte, por onde foste, e de diante de ti exterminei todos os teus inimigos e te fiz um nome como o nome dos grandes que estão na terra.

9 E ordenei um lugar para o meu povo Israel, e o plantei, para que habite no seu lugar, e nunca mais seja removido  duma para outra parte; e nunca mais os debilitarão os filhos da perversidade, como ao princípio.

10 E desde os dias em que ordenei juízes sobre o meu povo Israel; porém abati a todos os teus inimigos: Também te fiz saber que o Senhor te edificaria uma casa.

11 E há de ser que, quando forem cumpridos os teus dias, para ires a teus pais, suscitarei a tua semente depois de ti, a qual será dos teus filhos, e confirmarei o seu reino.

12 Este me edificará a casa; e eu confirmarei o seu trono para sempre.

13 Eu lhe serei por pai, e ele me será por filho: e a minha benignidade não desviarei dele, como a tirei daqueles que foi antes de ti.

14 Mas o confirmarei na minha casa e no meu reino para sempre, e o seu trono será firme para sempre.

15 Conforme todas estas palavras, e conforme toda esta visão, assim falou Natã a Davi.

Thanksgiving and Songs of David

4 And he set some of the Levites before the ark of the Lord to minister, to remember, to praise, and to celebrate the Lord God of Israel.

5 Asaph was the chief, and next to him were Zechariah; Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jeiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel with psalteries and harps; and Asaph made himself heard with cymbals;

6 And Benaiah and Jahaziel, the priests, with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

7 Then David delivered the following psalm that day, first, to praise the Lord, by the hand of Asaph and his brethren:

8 Praise the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.

9 Sing to him, sing praises to him, and speak of all his wonderful works.

10 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

11 Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his face continually.

12 Remember his wonders that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments of his mouth.

13 O house of Israel, his servants, you sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

15 Remember his covenant forever, the word that he commanded for a thousand generations,

16 the covenant that he made with Abraham, and his oath to Isaac; 

17 He confirmed this to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 

18 saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan, the portion of your inheritance."

 19 Although you were few in number, few in number, and strangers in it, 

20 they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people. 

21 He allowed no one to oppress them, and he rebuked kings for their sakes, saying, 

22 "Do not touch my anointed ones, and do my prophets no harm."

 23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation from day to day.

 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his wonders among all peoples. 

25 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods. 

26 For all the gods of the nations are vanity, but the Lord made the heavens.

 27 Majesty and splendor are before him; strength and joy are in his place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring gifts, and come before him; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

30 Tremble before him, let all the earth tremble; for the world is established, that it may not be moved.

31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; and let them say among the nations, The Lord reigns.

32 Let the sea roar with its fullness; let the field rejoice, and all that is in it.

33 Then the trees of the wood will sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.

34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his lovingkindness endures forever. 

35 And say, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the nations; that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.

36 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, forever and ever. And all the people said, Amen! And they gave thanks to the Lord.

37 Then he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to minister continually before the ark, as was appointed for each day.

38 And Obed-Edom and his brothers, sixty-eight: whom he appointed Obed-Edom the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, to be doorkeepers. 

39 And Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,

 40 to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, according to all that is written in the law which the LORD had commanded for Israel. 

41 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun, and the chosen men who were mentioned by name, to praise the LORD, for his mercy endures forever. 

42 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun, and trumpets and cymbals for those who gave them sound, and instruments of music of God; but the sons of Jeduthun stood at the gate. 

43 Then all the people departed, each to his own house; and David returned to bless his house.

4 E pôs perante a arca do Senhor alguns dos levitas por ministros; e isto para recordarem, e louvarem, e celebrarem ao Senhor Deus de Israel.

5 Era Asafe o chefe, e Zacarias o segundo depois dele: Jeiel, e Semiramote, e Jeiel, e Matitias, e Eliabe, e Benaia e Obede-Edom, e Jeiel, com alaúdes e com harpas: e Asafe se fazia ouvir com címbalos;

6 Também Benaia, e Jaaziel, os sacerdotes continuamente com trombetas, perante a arca do concerto de Deus.

7 Então naquele mesmo dia entregou Davi em primeiro lugar o Salmo seguinte, para louvarem ao Senhor, pelo ministério de Asafe e de seus irmãos:

8 Louvai ao Senhor, invocai o seu nome, fazei conhecidos entre os povos os seus feitos.

9 Cantai-lhe, salmodiai-lhe, atentamente falai de todas as suas maravilhas.

10 Gloriai-vos no seu santo nome; alegre-se o coração dos que buscam ao Senhor.

11 Buscai ao Senhor, e a sua força; buscai a sua face continuamente.

12 Lembrai-vos das suas maravilhas que tem feito, dos seus prodígios, e dos juízos da sua boca.

13 Vós, semente de Israel, seus servos, vós, filhos de Jacó, seus eleitos.

14 Ele é o Senhor nosso Deus; em toda a terra estão os seus juízos.

15 Lembrai-vos perpetuamente do seu concerto e da palavra que prescreveu para mil gerações;

16 Do concerto que fez com Abraão, e do seu juramento a Isaque;

17 O qual também a Jacó ratificou por estatuto, e a Israel por concerto eterno,

18 Dizendo: A ti te darei a terra de Canaã, quinhão da vossa herança,

19 Sendo vós em pequeno número, poucos homens, e estrangeiros nela.

20 E andaram de nação em nação, e de um reino para outro povo.

21 A ninguém permitiu que os oprimisse, e por amor deles repreendeu reis, dizendo:

22 Não toqueis os meus ungidos, e aos meus profetas não façais mal.

23 Cantai ao Senhor em toda a terra; anunciai de dia em dia a sua salvação.

24 Contai entre as nações a sua glória, entre todos os povos as suas maravilhas.

25 Porque grande é o Senhor, e muito para louvar, e mais tremendo é do que todos os deuses.

26 Porque todos os deuses das nações são vaidades; porém o Senhor fez os céus.

27 Majestade e esplendor há diante dele, força e alegria no seu lugar.

28 Dai ao Senhor, ó famílias das nações, dai ao Senhor glória e força.

29 Dai ao Senhor a glória de seu nome; trazei presentes, e vinde perante ele: adorai ao Senhor na beleza da sua santidade.

30 Trema perante ele, trema toda a terra; pois o mundo se firmará, para que se não abale.

31 Alegrem-se os céus, e regozije-se a terra; e diga-se entre as nações: O Senhor reina.

32 Brama o mar com a sua plenitude; exulte o campo com tudo o que há nele.

33 Então jubilarão as árvores dos bosques perante o Senhor; porquanto vem a julgar a terra.

34 Louvai ao Senhor, porque é bom; pois a sua benignidade dura perpetuamente.

35 E dizei: Salva-nos, ó Deus da nossa salvação, e ajunta-nos, e livra-nos das nações; para que louvemos o teu santo nome, e nos gloriemos no teu louvor.

36 Louvado seja o Senhor Deus de Israel, de séculos em séculos. E todo o povo disse: Amém! E louvou ao Senhor.

37 Então deixou ali, diante da arca do concerto do Senhor, a Asafe e a seus irmãos, para ministrarem continuamente perante a arca, segundo se ordenara para cada dia.

38 E mais a Obede-Edom, com seus irmãos, sessenta e oito: a este Obede-Edom, filho de Jedutum, e a Hosa, ordenou por porteiros.

39 E mais a Zadoque, o sacerdote, e a seus irmãos, os sacerdotes, diante do tabernáculo do Senhor, no alto que estava em Gibeom,

40 Para oferecerem ao Senhor os holocaustos sobre o altar dos holocaustos continuamente pela manhã e à tarde: e isto segundo tudo o que está escrito na lei que o Senhor tinha prescrito a Israel.

1 So they brought the ark of God and set it in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.

2 When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.

3 And he distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a good piece of meat, and a flask of wine.

1 Trazendo pois a arca de Deus, a puseram no meio da tenda que Davi lhe tinha armado; e ofereceram holocaustos e sacrifícios pacíficos perante Deus.

2 E, acabando Davi de oferecer os holocaustos e sacrifícios pacíficos, abençoou o povo em Nome do Senhor.

3 E repartiu a todos em Israel. Tanto a homens como a mulheres, a cada um um pão, e um bom pedaço de carne, e um frasco de vinho.

1 He also made a house for himself in the City of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it.

2 Then David said, "No one may carry the ark of God except the Levites, for the Lord chose them to carry the ark of God and to minister to him forever."

3 So David gathered all Israel together in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord to its place which he had prepared for it.

4 And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and the Levites.

5 Of the sons of Kohath: Uriel the chief, and his brothers one hundred and twenty.

6 Of the sons of Merari: Asaiah the chief, and his brothers two hundred and twenty.

7 Of the sons of Gershon: Joel the chief, and his brothers one hundred and thirty.

8 Of the sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah the chief, and his brothers two hundred.

9 Of the sons of Hebron: Eliel the chief, and his brothers eighty.

10 Of the sons of Uzziel: Amminadab the chief, and his brothers one hundred and twelve.

11 Then David called for the priests Zadok and Abiathar, and for the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.

12 And he said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ houses among the Levites. Sanctify yourselves, you and your brothers, that you may bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place that I have prepared for it.

13 For because you did not do so at first, the LORD has broken through with us, because we did not seek him according to the ordinance.” 

14 So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel.

15 And the sons of the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders, as Moses commanded, according to the word of the Lord, with the staves that were on them.

16 And David commanded the princes of the Levites to appoint their brethren the singers with musical instruments, with psalteries, harps, and cymbals, that they might make a sound, lifting up their voices with joy.

17 So the Levites commanded Heman the son of Joel, and of his brethren Asaph the son of Berechiah, and of the sons of Merari, their brethren Ethan the son of Kushaiah. 

18 And with them their brothers of the second order: Zechariah, Ben, and Jahaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jeiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithitas, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.

19 And the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, with brass cymbals;

20 And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jeiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah with psalteries on Alamoth;

21 And Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with psalteries on Sheminit, to make the tone louder.

22 And Chenaniah the prince of the Levites was in charge of the song; he taught them to sing it, for he understood.

23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.

24 And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, blew the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.

25 And it came to pass, that David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obed-edom with joy.

26 And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams. 

27 David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who carried the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah, chief of those who carried the ark and of the singers; David also had a linen ephod on him. 

28 All Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of cornets, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, and with harps and lyres. 

29 When the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked out of a window and saw David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.

1 Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar timber, and masons, and carpenters, to build him a house.

2 And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, because his kingdom had been greatly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.

4 And these are the names of his sons that he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

5 And Jibar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,

6 And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

7 And Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

8 And when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David: and David went out against them.

9 And the Philistines came and spread out in the Valley of Raphaim.

10 Then David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines, and deliver them into my hand? And the Lord said to him, Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand.

11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there: and David said, By my hand God hath defeated my enemies, as the breaking forth of waters. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

12 And they left their gods there: and David commanded to burn them with fire.

13 But the Philistines turned back, and spread out in the valley.

14 And David inquired of God again: and God said to him, Thou shalt not go up after them; but compass them about behind, and come up against them in front of the mulberry trees: 

15 And it shall come to pass, when thou hearest the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, that thou go out to battle: for God hath gone out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines. 

16 And David did as God commanded him: and they slew the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even unto Gazor. 

17 So the name of David spread throughout all lands: and the fear of the LORD did unto all nations.

The Ark is Deposited in the House of Obed-Edom

1 Then David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with all the princes.

2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and that it is from the LORD our God, let us send messengers quickly to all our brethren who are left in all the land of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who are with them in the cities and their suburbs, that they may assemble with us.

3 And let us bring back the ark of our God to us; for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."

4 Then all the assembly said, "So it should be done, for the thing seemed right in the eyes of all the people."

5 So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor in Egypt as far as you come to Hamath, to bring up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.

6 Then David and all Israel went up to Baalah, and from there to Kiriath-jearim, which is in Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the Lord who dwells between the cherubim, who is called by his name.

7 And they brought the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, with Uzzah and Ahio driving the cart.

8 And David and all Israel rejoiced before God with all their might, with songs, with harps, with psalteries, with timbrels, with cymbals, and with trumpets.

9 And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah stretched out his hand to take hold of the ark, because the oxen stumbled.

10 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. 

11 And David was grieved because the Lord had made a breach in Uzzah; therefore he called that place Perez-uzzah, to this day.

12 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?

13 So David did not bring the ark home to the city of David, but removed it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

14 So the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months: and the Lord blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.

10 Então se acendeu a ira do Senhor contra Uzá, e o feriu, por ter estendido a sua mão à arca: e morreu ali perante Deus.

11 E Davi se encheu de tristeza de que o Senhor houvesse aberto brecha em Uzá; pelo que chamou àquele lugar Perez-Uzá, até ao dia de hoje.

12 E aquele dia temeu Davi ao Senhor, dizendo: Como trarei a mim a arca de Deus?

13 Pelo que Davi não trouxe a arca a si, à cidade de Davi; porém a fez retirar à casa de Obede-Edom, o geteu.

14 Assim ficou a arca de Deus com a família de Obede-Edom, três meses em sua casa: e o Senhor abençoou a casa de Obede-Edom, e tudo quanto tinha.

Those who came to David in Hebron

23 Now this is the number of the chiefs armed for war, who came to David in Hebron, to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord:

24 Of the children of Judah, who bore shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred, armed for war.

25 Of the children of Simeon, men of valor for war, seven thousand one hundred.

26 Of the children of Levi, four thousand six hundred.

28 And Zadok, who was yet a young man, a mighty man of valor; and of his father's house, twenty-two chiefs.

30 Of the children of Ephraim, twenty thousand eight hundred mighty men of valor, renowned men in their fathers' houses.

32 And of the children of Issachar, who had knowledge of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren kept the word. 

33 Of Zebulun, of those who went out to the army, arrayed for war with all weapons of war, fifty thousand; and those who were able to set the battle in array with a steadfast heart. 

34 And of Naphtali, a thousand captains, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear. 

35 And of the Danites, arrayed for war, twenty-eight thousand six hundred. 

36 And of Asher, of those who went out to the army, to set the battle in array, forty thousand.

 37 And from beyond the Jordan, of the Reubenites, and of the Gadites, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for war, an hundred and twenty thousand. 

38 All these men of war, set in array, came with a whole heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the remnant of Israel were of one heart to make David king. 

39 And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared provisions for them. 

40 And their neighbours also, even Issachar, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought bread for donkeys, and for camels, and for mules, and for oxen, and for flour, and cakes of figs, and clusters of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep in abundance: for there was joy in Israel.

23 Ora este é o número dos chefes armados para a peleja, que vieram a Davi em Hebrom, para transferir a ele o reino de Saul, conforme a palavra do Senhor:

24 Dos filhos de Judá, que traziam rodela e lança, seis mil e oitocentos, armados para a peleja.

25 Dos filhos de Simeão, varões valentes para pelejar, sete mil e cem.

26 Dos filhos de Levi, quatro mil e seiscentos.

27 Joiada porém era o chefe dos de Aarão, e com ele três mil e setecentos,

28 E Zadoque, que sendo ainda mancebo, varão valente; e da família de seu pai, vinte e dois príncipes.

29 E dos filhos de Benjamim, irmãos de Saul, três mil, porque até então havia ainda muitos deles que eram pela casa de Saul.

30 E dos filhos de Efraim vinte mil e oitocentos varões valentes, homens de nome em casa de seus pais.

31 E da meia tribo de Manassés dezoito mil, que foram apontados pelos seus nomes para vir a fazer rei a Davi.

37 E da banda dalém do Jordão, dos rubenitas e gaditas, e da meia tribo de Manassés, com toda a sorte de instrumentos de guerra para pelejar, cento e vinte mil.

38 Todos estes homens de guerra postos em ordem de batalha, com coração inteiro, vieram a Hebrom, para levantar Davi rei sobre todo o Israel: e também todo o resto de Israel tinha o mesmo coração para levantar a Davi rei.

39 E estiveram ali com Davi três dias, comendo e bebendo; porque seus irmãos lhes tinham preparado as provisões.

40 E também seus vizinhos de mais perto, até Issacar, e Zebulom, e Naftali, trouxeram pão sobre jumentos, e sobre camelos, e sobre mulos, e sobre bois, provisões de farinha, pastas de figos e cachos de passas, e vinho, e azeite, e bois, e gado miúdo em abundância; porque havia alegria em Israel.
