Job pleads with God for the shortness and misery of human life

1 Man, born of a woman, is of few days and full of trouble.

2 He comes forth like a flower, and withers; he also flees like a shadow, and does not remain.

3 Yet you open your eyes upon such a one, and bring me into judgment with you.

4 Who can bring something clean out of an unclean? No one.

5 For his days are determined, the number of his months is with you; and you have set a limit for him, that he may not pass beyond them.

6 Turn away from him, that he may have rest, until he has contentment like a hired servant in his day.

7 For there is hope for a tree, that if it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its shoots will not cease.

8 Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground, 

9 At the scent of water it will bud and put out branches like a plant. 

10 But when a man dies, he is consumed; if a man gives up the ghost, where is he? 

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the river dries up and dries up. 

12 So man lies down and does not rise; until the heavens are no more he will not awake or arise from his sleep. 

13 Oh that you would hide me in the grave, that you would keep me secret until your anger turns away; that you would set a limit for me and remember me! 

14 If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait, until my change comes. 

15 You would call to me, and I would answer you: Have affection for the work of your hands. 

16 But now you count my steps; do you not watch over my sin?

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and you heap up my iniquities.

18 Surely a mountain falls and is destroyed, and a rock is removed from its place.

19 Waters wear away the stones; torrents drown the dust of the earth; yet you destroy the hope of man.

20 You prevail against him forever, and he passes away; you change his face and send him away.

21 His children are honored, and he does not know it; they are diminished, and he does not perceive it.

22 But his flesh is in pain within him, and his soul mourns within him.

3 E sobre este tal abres os teus olhos, e a mim me fazes entrar em juízo contigo.

4 Quem do imundo tirará o puro? Ninguém.

5 Visto que os seus dias estão determinados, contigo está o número dos seus meses; e tu lhe puseste limites, e não passará além deles.

6 Desvia-te dele, para que tenha repouso, até que, como o jornaleiro, tenha contentamento no seu dia.

7 Porque há esperança para a árvore, que, se for cortada, ainda se renovará, e não cessarão os seus renovos.

8 Se envelhecer na terra a sua raiz, e morrer o seu tronco no pó,

9 Ao cheiro das águas brotará, e dará ramos como a planta.

10 Mas, morto o homem, é consumido; sim, rendendo o homem o espírito, então onde está?

11 Como as águas se retiram do mar, e o rio se esgota, e fica seco.

12 Assim o homem se deita, e não se levanta; até que não haja mais céus não acordará nem se erguerá de seu sono.

13 Oxalá me escondesses na sepultura, e me ocultasses até que a tua ira se desviasse; e me pusesses um limite, e te lembrasses de mim!

14 Morrendo o homem, porventura tornará a viver? Todos os dias de meu combate esperaria, até que viesse a minha mudança.

15 Chamar-me-ias, e eu te responderia: afeiçoa-te à obra de tuas mãos.

16 Mas agora conta os meus passos; não estás tu vigilante sobre o meu pecado?

14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?

15 Though he slay me, I will trust in him; yet I will defend my ways before him.

16 This also will be my salvation, for the wicked will not come before him.

17 Hear carefully my words, and with your ears my demonstration.

18 Behold, I have ordered my cause, and I know that I will be found righteous.

19 Who is he that will contend with me? If I were to hold my peace now, I would give up my spirit.

20 Only two things do not you do to me, that I may not hide from your face:

21 Withdraw your hand far from me, and do not let your terror terrify me.

22 Call, and I will answer; or I will speak, and you answer me.

23 How many guilts and sins have I? Make me aware of my transgression and my sin.

24 Why do you hide your face, and count me as your enemy?

25 Will you break the blown-off leaf? Or chase away the dry stubble?

26 Why do you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the guilt of my youth?

27 You put my feet in stocks, and watch all my ways, and mark the prints of my feet,

28 Though I am like a rotten thing that consumes away, and like a garment that is moth-eaten.

10 यदि तुम छिपकर पक्षपात करो, तो वह तुम्हें अवश्य डांटेगा।

11 क्या उसका ऐश्वर्य तुम्हें चकित नहीं करेगा? और क्या उनका भय तुम पर न पड़ेगा?

1 Behold, my eyes have seen all this, and my ears have heard and understood it.

2 As you know, so I know that I am not inferior to you.

3 But I will speak to the Almighty; and I will make my defense before God.

4 But you are inventors of lies, and all of you are worthless physicians.

5 Would that you would be completely silent, that would be your wisdom!

6 Hear now my defense, and listen to the arguments of my lips.

7 Will you speak wickedly for God, and speak lies for him?

8 Will you accept his person? Will you contend for God?

9 Would it be good for you if he searched you out? Or would you mock him as one mocks?

10 He will surely rebuke you if you show partiality in secret.

11 Will not his majesty terrify you? Will not his fear fall upon you?

12 Your memory is like ashes, your heights like clay.

13 Be silent before me, and I will speak, and let whatever comes upon me come upon me.

Job Defends Himself Against the Accusations of His Friends

1 Then Job answered and said:

2 Surely you are the people, and wisdom will die with you.

3 I also have a heart like yours, and I am not inferior to you; and who does not know such things as these?

4 I am a laughingstock to my friends; I who call upon God, and he answers me; the just and the upright are a laughingstock.

5 A contemptible torch is in the sight of him who is at ease, who is ready to stumble with his feet.

6 The tents of the desolate have rest, and those who provoke God are safe; God has put everything in their hands.

7 But ask now the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you;

8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; even the fish of the sea will tell you.

9 Who does not understand in all these things that the hand of the Lord has done this, 

10 Who is in His hand the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all human flesh? 

11 Does not the ear test words, as the palate tastes food? 

12 With the aged is wisdom, and in long life understanding. 

13 With Him are wisdom and strength; He has counsel and understanding. 

14 Behold, He tears down, and it shall not be built again; and to him who He shuts in, it shall not be opened. 

15 Behold, He holds back the waters, and they dry up; He sends them out, and they overturn the earth. 

16 With Him are strength and wisdom; He is the one who errs and who causes to err. 

17 He leads counselors away spoiled, and makes judges go mad. 

18 He looses the bands of kings, and binds the girdle around their waist. 

19 He leads princes away as plunder, and overthrows the mighty. 

20 He takes away the speech of the trusty, and takes away the understanding of the aged. 

21 He pours contempt on princes, and loosens the belt of the mighty. 

22 He reveals the depths of darkness, and brings forth the shadow of death. 

23 He multiplies nations, and destroys them; he scatters nations, and leads them again. 

24 He takes away the hearts of the princes of the nations of the earth, and makes them wander in the deserts, without a path. 

25 They grope in the darkness, without light, and makes them mad like drunkards.

6 और तू ने बुद्धि के भेदों को जो अनेक प्रकार के हैं, प्रगट किया है। क्योंकि वह जानता है कि परमेश्वर तुम्हारे अधर्म के अनुसार तुमसे कम चाहता है।

Sophar rebukes Job, shows God's wisdom, and urges repentance

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

2 Will there not be an answer for the multitude of words? And will a talkative man be justified?

3 Will men be silent with your lies? And will you mock, and no one will put you to shame?

4 For you have said, 'My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your sight.'

5 But surely God would speak and open his lips against you,

6 And you have made known to yourself the secrets of wisdom, which is manifold in its effectiveness; therefore you know that God requires of you less than your iniquity deserves.

7 Can you find out the ways of God? Can you find out the perfection of the Almighty?

8 His wisdom is as high as the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than hell, what can you know?

9 Its measure is longer than the earth, and wider than the sea.

10 If he destroys, and shuts up, or gathers together, who can stop him?

11 For he knows vain men, and sees wickedness, and will not consider it?

12 But vain man is void of understanding; yes, man is born like the colt of a wild donkey.

13 If you have prepared your heart, stretch out your hands toward him;

14 If iniquity is in your hand, cast it far from you, and do not let injustice dwell in your tents.

15 For then you will lift up your face without blemish; and you will be established, and will not be afraid.

16 For you will forget your troubles, and remember them as waters that have passed away.

17 And your life will rise brighter than noonday; though there be darkness, it shall be as the morning.

18 And thou shalt be confident, because there is hope; thou shalt look about, and shalt lie down in safety.

19 And thou shalt lie down, and no man shall make thee afraid; many shall caress thy face.

20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and their refuge shall perish; and their hope shall be the perishing of the soul.

1 Então respondeu Sofar, o naamatita, e disse:

2 Porventura não se dará resposta à multidão de palavras? E o homem falador será justificado?

3 As tuas mentiras se hão de calar os homens? E zombarás tu sem que ninguém te envergonhe?

4 Pois tu disseste: A minha alma doutrina é pura, e limpo sou aos teus olhos.

5 Mas, na verdade, oxalá que Deus falasse e abrisse os seus lábios contra ti,

6 E te fizeste saber os segredos da sabedoria, que é multíplice em eficácia; pelo que sabe que Deus exige de ti menos do que merece a tua iniqüidade.

7 Porventura alcançarás os caminhos de Deus ou chegarás à perfeição do Todo-poderoso?

8 Como as alturas dos céus é a sua sabedoria; que poderás tu fazer? Mais profunda é ela do que o inferno, que poderás tu saber?

9 Mais comprida é a sua medida do que a terra; e mais larga do que o mar.

10 Se ele destruir, e encerrar, ou juntar, quem o impedirá?

11 Porque ele conhece os homens vãos, e vê o vício; e não o terá em consideração?

12 Mas o homem vão é falto de entendimento; sim, o homem nasce como a cria do jumento montês.

13 Se tu preparaste o teu coração, estende as tuas mãos para ele;

14 Se há iniqüidade na tua mão, lança-a para longe de ti, e não deixes habitar a injustiça nas tuas tendas,

15 Porque então o teu rosto levantarás sem mácula; e estarás firme, e não temerás.

16 Porque te esquecerás dos trabalhos, e te lembrarás deles como das águas que já passaram.

21 इससे पहले कि मैं अंधकार और मृत्यु की छाया के देश में जाऊँ, और कभी वापस न आऊँ;

1 My soul is weary of my life; I will give free rein to my complaint, I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

2 I will say to God, "Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me."

3 Is it good to you that you oppress me, that you reject the work of your hands, and that you shine on the counsel of the wicked?

4 Do you have eyes of flesh? Do you see as man sees?

5 Are your days like those of man? Or are your years like the years of a man?

6 That you may inquire after my iniquity, and search out my sin?

7 You know that I am not wicked; yet there is no one who can deliver me from your hand.

8 Your hands have made me and woven me together, yet you consume me.

 9 Remember, I pray, that you formed me like clay, and that you will bring me back to dust.

10 Have you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?

11 You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.

12 You have given me life and love, and your care has preserved my spirit.

13 But you have hidden these things in your heart; I know that this has been with you.

14 If I sin, you will watch me; you will not excuse me from my iniquity.

15 If I am wicked, woe to me! But if I am righteous, I will not lift up my head; I am full of shame, and I look at my misery.

16 Because I exalt myself, you hunt me like a fierce lion, and again you do wonders against me. 

17 You renew your witnesses against me, and multiply your anger against me; retribution and conflict are with me.

18 Why then did you take me out of the womb? Oh, that I would give birth, and no eye would see me!

19 Then I would be as though I had never been, and I would be carried from the womb to Sheol!

20 Are not my days few? Cease, therefore, and let me alone, that I may take courage for a little while;

21 Before I go, never to return, to the land of darkness and the shadow of death,

22 to the land of darkness, as darkness itself, the land of the shadow of death, and without any order, where the light is as darkness.

3 यदि वह उससे बहस करना चाहे तो उसे एक हजार बातों में से एक भी बात का उत्तर न दे सकेगा।

4 वह हृदय से बुद्धिमान और शक्ति में बलवान है; जो उसके विरुद्ध कठोर हो गया, और शांति रखी?

5 वह पहाड़ों को हटाता है, और वे इसे नहीं जानते; वह क्रोध में उनको उलट देता है।

11 देख, वह मेरे साम्हने होकर चला जाता है, परन्तु मैं उसे नहीं देख पाता; और वह पुनः मेरे सामने से गुजरता है, और मैं उसे महसूस नहीं करता।

12 देखो, वह शिकार पकड़ता है; उसे कौन लौटाएगा? कौन उससे पूछेगा: तुम क्या कर रहे हो?

13 परमेश्वर अपना क्रोध न हटाएगा; उसके नीचे अभिमानी सहायक झुक जाते हैं।

20 यदि मैं अपने आप को निर्दोष ठहराऊं, तो मेरा मुंह मुझे दोषी ठहराएगा; यदि वह मुझे सीधे-सीधे बताएगा, तो वह मुझे दुष्ट घोषित कर देगा।

21 चाहे मैं सिद्ध हूं, तौभी अपने प्राण का मूल्य न समझूंगा; मैं अपने जीवन से घृणा करता हूं।

22 बात यह है; इसलिये मैं कहता हूं कि यह धर्मी और दुष्ट दोनों को नष्ट कर देता है।

Job Confesses God's Justice and Asks for Relief from His Misery

1 Then Job answered and said:

2 Of a truth I know that it is so; for how can a man be justified with God?

3 If he should strive with him, he cannot answer him one thing of a thousand.

4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and had peace?

5 He removeth the mountains, and they know not; and overturneth them in his wrath.

6 He removeth the earth out of her place, and its pillars tremble.

7 He speaketh to the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.

8 He alone stretcheth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the heights of the sea.

9 He maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.

10 Who does great things that cannot be fathomed, and wonders that cannot be counted.

11 Behold, he passes before me, and I do not see him; and he passes before me again, and I do not feel him.

12 Behold, he takes the prey; who will restore it? Who will say to him, 'What are you doing?'

13 God will not turn back his anger; proud helpers bow down beneath him.

14 How much less should I answer him or choose my words before him!

15 If I were righteous, I would not answer him; but I would ask mercy of my Judge.

16 If I called, and he answered me, I would not believe that he would listen to my voice.

17 For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

18 He does not let me breathe, but fills me with bitterness. 

19 As for strength, behold, he is the strong one; and as for judgment, who will adduce me with him? 

20 If I justify myself, my mouth will condemn me; if I say I am righteous, then it will declare me wicked. 

21 Though I am perfect, I do not esteem my soul; I despise my life. 

22 This is the matter; therefore I say that he consumes the righteous and the wicked. 

23 When the scourge slays suddenly, then he laughs at the trial of the innocent. 

24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the face of the judges; if it is not he, who is? 

25 And my days are swifter than a post; they have fled, and have never seen good. 

26 They pass away like sailing ships, like an eagle swooping down on its prey. 

27 If I say, "I will forget my complaint," I will change my face, and take courage; 

28 I fear all my sorrows, for I know that you will not hold me guiltless.

29 And since I am wicked, why should I labor in vain?

30 Though I wash myself with snow water and make my hands clean with soap,

31 Yet you will plunge me into the ditch, and my own clothes will abhor me.

32 For he is not a man like me, to whom I answer, I divide the judgment together.

33 There is no umpire between us who can lay his hand between us.

34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his terror terrify me.

35 Then I will speak, and will not be afraid of him, for I am not in myself.

1 Então Jó respondeu, e disse:

2 Na verdade sei que assim é; porque como se justificaria o homem para com Deus?

3 Se quiser contender com ele, nem a uma de mil coisas lhe poderá responder.

4 Ele é sábio de coração, poderoso em força; quem se endureceu contra ele, e teve paz?

5 Ele é o que transporta as montanhas, sem que o sintam, e o que as transtorna no seu furor.

6 O que remove a terra do seu lugar, e as suas colunas estremecem.

7 O que fala ao sol, e ele não sai, e sela as estrelas.

8 O que só estende os céus, e anda sobre os altos do mar.

9 O que faz a Ursa, o Óriom, e o Sete-estrelo, e as recâmaras do sul.

10 O que faz coisas grandes, que se não podem esquadrinhar, e maravilhas tais que se não podem contar.

11 Eis que passa por diante de mim, e não o vejo; e torna a passar perante mim, e não o sinto.

12 Eis que arrebata a presa; quem lha fará restituir? Quem lhe dirá: Que fazes?

13 Deus não revogará a sua ira; debaixo dele se encurvam os auxiliadores soberbos.

14 Quanto menos lhe poderei eu responder ou escolher diante dele as minhas palavras!

15 A ele, ainda que eu fosse justo, lhe não responderia; antes ao meu Juiz pediria misericórdia.

16 Ainda que chamasse, e ele me respondesse, nem por isso creria que desse ouvidos à minha voz.

17 Porque me quebranta com uma tempestade, e multiplica as minhas chagas sem causa.

18 Nem me permite respirar, antes me farta de amarguras.

19 Quanto às forças, eis que ele é o forte; e quanto ao juízo, quem me citará com ele?

20 Se eu me justificar, a minha boca me condenará; se reto me disser, então me declarará perverso.

21 Ainda que perfeito, não estimo a minha alma; desprezo a minha vida.

22 A coisa é esta; por isso eu digo que ele consome ao reto e ao ímpio.

23 Matando o açoite de repente, então se ri da prova dos inocentes.

24 A terra é entregue às mãos do ímpio; ele cobre o rosto dos juízes; se não é ele, quem é logo?

25 E os meus dias são mais velozes do que um correio; fugiram, e nunca viram o bem.

26 Passam como navios veleiros; como águia que se lança à comida.

27 Se eu disser: Eu me esquecerei da minha queixa, mudarei o meu rosto, e tomarei alento;

28 Receio todas as minhas dores, porque bem sei que me não terás por inocente.

29 E, sendo eu ímpio, por que trabalharei em vão?

30 Ainda que me lave com água de neve, e purifique as minhas mãos com sabão,

31 Mesmo assim me submergirás no fosso, e os meus próprios vestidos me abominarão.

32 Porque ele não é homem, como eu, a quem eu responda, cindo juntamente o juízo.

33 Não há entre nós árbitro que ponha a mão sobre nós ambos.

34 Tire ele a sua vara de cima de mim, e não me amedronte o seu terror.

35 Então falarei, e não o temerei; porque assim não estou em mim.
