Samuel 14 Saul's cheeky vote

Samuel 14

Saul's cheeky vote

And the men of Israel were already exhausted that day, because Saul had conjured up the people, saying, Cursed be the man who eats bread until evening, that he may avenge me on my enemies. So all the people refrained from tasting bread.

And all the people came to a forest: and there was honey on the surface of the field.

And when the people came into the forest, behold, there was a well of honey: but no one reached his hand to his mouth because the people feared the conspiracy.

But Jonathan had not heard when his father had summoned the people, and he extended the end of the stick in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb; and, returning to his mouth, his eyes were clarified.

Then one of the people answered and said, Your people solemnly conjured up the people, saying, Cursed be the man who eats bread today. For what the people fainted.

Then Jonathan said, My father has troubled the earth; now see how my eyes were lightened by having tasted some of this honey.

How much more if the people today had freely eaten the spoil they found of their enemies. But now it was not so much damage from the Philistines.

But that day they smote the Philistines, from Micmash to Ajalon, and the people were very faint.

Then the people took to the spoil, and they took sheep, and cows, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with blood.

And they announced it to Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the Lord, eating with blood. And he said, You have worked hard: I have turned over a large stone today.

And Saul said, Pour yourselves out among the people, and say to them, Bring each of them his ox, and each one of his sheep, and slaughter them here, and eat, and do not sin against the Lord, eating with blood. Then all the people brought in the night, each with his hand, his ox and beheaded them there.

Then Saul built an altar to the Lord: this was the first altar he built to the Lord.
