1 Then Job answered and said:

2 How you have helped him who had no strength, and upheld the arm that had no might!

3 How you have counseled him who had no wisdom, and made known to him the cause, just as it was!

4 To whom have you spoken words? And whose spirit has gone out from you?

5 The dead tremble beneath the waters, with their inhabitants.

6 Sheol is naked before him, and destruction has no covering.

7 The north stretches out over empty space; it hangs the earth upon nothing.

8 He binds up the waters in thick clouds, and the cloud is not rent under them.

9 He covers the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud over it.

10 He has set a bound for the face of the waters round about, to the ends of light and darkness.

11 The pillars of the heavens tremble and are dismayed at his rebuke.

12 By his strength he divides the sea, and by his understanding he brings down its pride.

13 By his Spirit he adorns the heavens; his hand forms the coiling serpent.

14 Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways; and how little do we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?

4 Para quem proferiste palavras? E de quem é o espírito que saiu de ti?

5 Os mortos tremem debaixo das águas com os seus moradores.

6 O inferno está nu perante ele, e não há coberta para a perdição.

7 O norte estende sobre o vazio; suspende a terra sobre o nada.

8 Prende as águas em densas nuvens, e a nuvem não se rasga debaixo delas.

9 Encobre a face do seu trono, e sobre ela estende a sua nuvem.

2 Even today my complaint is bitter; the severity of my plague is worse than my groaning.

3 Oh, that I had known that I could find him! Then I would come to his judgment seat.

4 I would present my case before him in order, and my mouth would be filled with arguments.

5 I would know the words with which he would answer me, and I would understand what he would say to me.

6 Would he contend with me according to the greatness of his power? No, but he would care for me.

7 There the upright would plead with him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge.

8 Behold, if I go forward, he is not there; if I turn back, I do not perceive him.

9 If he works on the left hand, I do not see him; he is hidden on the right hand, and I do not see him.

10 But he knows my way; let him test me, and I shall come forth as gold.

11 My feet have taken hold of his steps; I have kept his way, and have not turned aside from it.

12 I have not departed from the commandment of his lips, and I have prized the words of his mouth more than my food.

13 But if he is against any man, who then shall turn him away? Whatever his soul desireth, that he will do.

14 For he will perform that which is commanded concerning me, and many such things are with him.

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 Can a man profit God? But a prudent man is profitable to himself.

3 Does the Almighty delight in your righteousness, or gain anything by making your ways blameless?

4 Or does he rebuke you because he fears you, or enter into judgment with you?

5 Is not your wickedness great, and your iniquities endless?

6 For you have taken pledges from your brothers without cause, and have stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 You have not given water to the weary to drink, and withheld bread from the hungry.

8 But the land was for the violent, and the man held in honor dwelt in it.

9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 Therefore snares have surrounded you, and sudden fear has troubled you.

11 Or darkness, where you cannot see, and abundance of waters has covered you.

12 Is not God high in the heavens? Consider the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 And you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge in the darkness?'

14 The clouds are a hiding place for him, so that you cannot see; he walks in the circuit of the heavens.

15 Have you considered the path of the past, which the wicked have trodden?

16 They were taken away before their time; a flood was poured upon their foundation.

17 They said to God, 'Depart from us!' and, 'What has the Almighty done?' 

18 Now he had filled their houses with good things; therefore the counsel of the wicked be far from me!

19 The righteous saw it, and were glad, and the innocent mocked them,

20 Saying, "For our estate is not destroyed, but the fire has consumed the remnant of them."

21 Therefore cleave to him, and be at peace, and good will come to you.

22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up; put away iniquity from thy tent.

24 ​​Then shalt thou heap up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 And the Almighty shall be unto thee as gold, and as heaped up silver.

26 For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

 27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you; and you will pay your vows.

28 When you decide on a matter, he will be established for you, and light will shine on your path.

29 When they bring you low, then you will say, "Let there be exaltation!" And God will save the humble.

Job Shows That the Wicked Often Enjoy Prosperity in This Life

1 Then Job answered and said,

2 Hear diligently my speech; and let this be your comfort.

3 Bear with me, and I will speak; and when I have spoken, mock.

4 Do I complain to any man? Yet even if I did, why should not my spirit be troubled?

5 Look at me, and be astonished; and lay your hand upon your mouth.

6 For when I remember this, I am troubled, and my flesh is overcome with horror.

7 Why do the wicked live, and grow old, and yet strive for power?

8 Their seed is established with them before their face, and their young before their eyes.

9 Their houses are at peace, without fear; and the rod of God is not upon them.

10 Their bull breeds and does not fail, their cow calves and does not miscarry.

11 They bring out their young like a flock, and their children skip.

12 They lift up their voices to the sound of the tambourine and the harp, and rejoice at the sound of the trumpet.

13 They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol.

14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we do not desire the knowledge of your ways."

15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what good is it to us if we pray to him?

16 But behold, their good is not in their hands; let the counsel of the wicked be far from me!

17 How often does the lamp of the wicked go out, and their destruction comes upon them? And God divides sorrows among them in his wrath. 

18 For they are like chaff before the wind, and like chaff that the whirlwind carries away.

19 God stores up his violence for his children, and repays them, that they may know it.

20 His eyes see his destruction, and he drinks the wrath of the Almighty.

21 For what pleasure would he have in his house after him, when he cuts off the number of his months?

22 Should God be taught knowledge, who judges the high?

23 One dies in the strength of his fullness, while he is completely still and quiet.

24 His buckets are full of milk, and his bones are watered with marrow.

25 And another dies in the bitterness of his heart, because he has not tasted good.

26 They lie together in the dust, and the worms cover them. 

27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the evil devices wherewith ye have wronged me.

28 Why say ye, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the tent where the wicked dwelleth?

29 Have ye not asked them that pass by the way, and know ye not their signs?

30 That the wicked is kept for the day of destruction, and taken away in the day of wrath?

31 Who shall reprove him for his way to him? and who shall recompense him for his deed?

32 At last he is brought to the grave, and keepeth watch in the tomb.

33 The clods of the valley are sweet unto him, and he draweth away all men after him; and before him there were innumerable.

34 How then do ye comfort me in vain? for in your answers there is only falsehood.

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said:

2 Since my thoughts prompt me to answer, I will make haste.

3 I have heard the rebuke that shames me, but the spirit of my understanding will answer for me.

4 Do you not know that from of old, since man was placed on the earth,

5 The joy of the wicked is brief, and the exultation of the hypocrite is but for a moment?

6 Though his height mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches to the clouds,

7 He will perish forever like his own dung; and those who have seen him will say, “Where is he?”

8 He flies away like a dream, and cannot be found; he is chased away like a vision of the night.

9 The eye that saw him will see him no more, nor will he look for his place any more.

10 His sons will please the poor, and his hands will restore his wealth.

11 His bones will be full of the vigor of his youth, but they will lie down with him in the dust.

12 Though evil is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,

13 And he keeps it, and does not let it go, but keeps it in his mouth,

14 Yet his food will be turned to poison in his belly; it will be the gall of asps within him.

15 He has swallowed wealth, and will vomit it out; God will cast it out of his belly.

16 He will suck out the poison of asps; the tongue of a viper will kill him.

17 He will not see the streams, the rivers, the brooks of honey and butter.

18 He will restore his labor, and will not swallow it; according to the power of his change he will not rejoice.

 19 Because he oppressed and forsook the poor, and robbed the house he did not build; 

20 Because he had no rest in his belly, he will retain nothing of his much-desired wealth. 

21 He will have nothing left to eat; therefore his wealth will not last. 

22 When his sufficiency is full, he will be in distress; every hand of the poor will come upon him. 

23 But let there be enough to fill his belly, and God will send forth the fierceness of his wrath upon him, and will rain it upon him when he eats. 

24 Though he flees from the weapons of iron, the bow of steel will pierce him through. 

25 The dart will pull out of his body, and a flash of light will come from his gall; and terrors will be upon him. 

26 All darkness will hide in its secret places; a fire unblown will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.

27 The heavens will reveal his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him.

28 The income of his house will be carried away; in the day of his wrath it will all be poured out.

29 This is the portion of the wicked man from God; this is the inheritance that God has reserved for him.
