1 As for the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; because he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he would not be counted in the genealogy of the birthright.

2 For Judah was mighty among his brothers, and from him came the prince; but the birthright was Joseph's.

3 So the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

4 The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son Gog his son, Shimei his son,

5 Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,

6 Beerah his son whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried away captive: he was prince of the Reubenites.

7 As for their brothers by their families, when they were listed by genealogy according to their generations, their heads were Jeiel and Zechariah. 

8 And Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who lived in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal-meon. 

9 He also lived on the east side, as far as the entrance to the wilderness, from the river Euphrates, because their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead. 

10 And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagrites, who fell by their hand; and they lived in their tents opposite all the east side of Gilead. 

11 And the children of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah. 

12 Joel was the chief, and Shaphan the second; but Jaanai and Shaphat remained in Bashan.

13 And their brethren, according to their fathers' houses, were Michael, and Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jokan, and Ziha, and Eber, seven.

14 These were the sons of Abihail the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshisai, the son of Jado, the son of Buz;

15 Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was the chief of their fathers' house.

16 And they dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan, and in its towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, as far as its outskirts.

17 All these were reckoned by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

 18 Of the children of Reuben, and of the Gadites, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, very warlike men, who bore shield and sword, and drew bow, and were skilled in war, there were forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty who went out to war.

19 And they made war with the Hagrites, as with Jetur, and Naphish, and Nodab.

20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all that were with them were given into their hands; because they cried unto God in the battle, and he hearkened unto them, because they trusted in him.

21 And they took captive their cattle, fifty thousand of their camels, and two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand asses, and a hundred thousand souls of men.

22 For many fell slain, because the battle was of God: and they dwelt in their place until the captivity. 23 Now the children of the half-tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land: from Bashan even to Baal-hermon they multiplied.

24 And these were heads of their fathers' houses, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valor, famous men, and heads of their fathers' houses.

25 But they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and followed other gods of the peoples of the land, whom God destroyed before them.

26 Therefore the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and they carried them away captive, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh; and they brought them to Halah, and to Habor, and to Hara, and to the river of Gozan, unto this day.
