The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 49
Prophecy against the Edomites
Against Edom. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? Has the counsel of the prudent perished? Has their wisdom become corrupt?
Flee, return, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan, for I have brought upon him the ruin of Esau, at the time when I visited him.
If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings? If thieves by night, would they not plunder you as much as they deemed sufficient?
But I have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places, and he will not be able to hide himself: his descendants are destroyed, as well as his brothers and his neighbors, and he is no more.
Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive; and your widows will trust in me.
For thus says the Lord: Behold, those who were not condemned to drink the cup shall drink it altogether, and you shall be entirely unpunished? You shall not be unpunished, but you shall surely drink it.
For by myself I have sworn, says the Lord, that Bozrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a desolation, and an execration; and all its cities shall become perpetual desolations.
I have heard a rumor from the Lord, that an ambassador is sent to the nations, to say to them: Assemble yourselves, and come against her, and rise up for war.
For behold, I have made you small among the nations, despised among men.
As for your terribleness, the arrogance of your heart has deceived you. You who dwell in the caves of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hills; though you raise your nest like the eagle, from there I will bring you down, says the Lord.
Thus Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by will be appalled and will hiss because of all its plagues.
It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, declares the Lord: no one will live there, nor will any human being dwell in it.
Behold, like a lion he will come up from the flood of the Jordan against the stronghold; for in a moment I will make him flee from there; and who is the chosen one whom I will set over it? And who would appoint me? And who is the shepherd who would stand before me?
Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord, which he has decreed against Edom, and his plans which he has devised against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the smallest of the flock he will drag away; surely he will lay waste their dwellings upon them.
The earth trembled at the sound of their fall; and the sound of their cry was heard as far as the Red Sea.
Behold, like an eagle it shall soar and fly, and spread its wings over Bozrah; and the heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pains.
