Prophecy against the Philistines

1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza.

2 Thus says the Lord: Behold, the waters of the north rise up, and they shall become an overflowing torrent, and shall flood the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it; and men shall cry out, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail,

3 At the loud noise of the hooves of their strong horses, at the din of their chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels: fathers do not heed the children, because their hands are weak;

4 Because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every remnant that helps them; for the Lord will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the island of Caphtor.

5 The molasses has come upon Gaza, Ashkelon has been uprooted, with the rest of its valley: how long will you weed yourself?

6 Ah! Sword of the Lord! How long will you not rest? Return to your sheath, rest, and be still.

7 How can you be still, since the Lord has given you a command against Ashkelon, and against the borders of the sea? There he has prescribed it for you.
