Lamentations of Jeremiah 5 Present Evils and Sad Memories

 Lamentations of Jeremiah 5

Present Evils and Sad Memories

Remember, Lord, what has happened to us; consider and look upon our reproach.

Our inheritance has passed to strangers, and our houses to foreigners.

We are fatherless orphans, our mothers are like widows.

We drink our water for money, and our firewood comes at a price.

Our persecutors are upon our necks; we are weary, and have no rest.

We stretched out our hands to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.

Our fathers sinned, and are no more; we bear their iniquities.

Servants rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hand.

At the risk of our lives we bring in our bread, because of the sword of the desert.

Our skin has become black like an oven, because of the burning heat of famine.

They violated the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah.

The princes were hanged by their hands; the faces of the old men were not revered.

They force the young men to grind, and the young men stumble under the wood.

The old men no longer have a seat at the gate, the young men no longer sing.

The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has turned into mourning.

The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned.

Therefore our hearts have fainted; therefore our eyes have grown dim.

Foxes prowl on Mount Zion, which is desolate.

You, Lord, remain forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.

Why would you forget us forever? Why would you forsake us for so long?

Turn us back to you, Lord, and we will be restored; renew our days as of old.

Why would you reject us completely? Why would you be so angry with us?
