Judges 01
New conquests by the tribes
And it came to pass, after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who among us will go up to the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
And the Lord said, Judah will go up: behold, I have given this land to him in his hand.
Then Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Go up with me to my fate, and let us fight against the Canaanites, and I will go up with you too with you." And Simeon left with him.
And Judah went up, and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Ferezees into his hand: and they struck ten thousand men in Bezek.
And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him: and smote the Canaanites and the Ferezees.
But Adoni-Bezek fled: and they followed him, and arrested him, and cut off the thumbs of his hands and feet.
Then Adoni-Bezek said, Seventy kings, with the thumbs of their hands and toes cut off, picked up the crumbs under their table: just as I did, so God paid me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
For the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword: and the city set it on fire.
And then the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and on the plains.
And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (but the name Hebron Chiriarte-Arba was before): and they smote Sesai, and Aman, and Talmai.
And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and it was formerly the name of Debir Kiriath-Séfer.
And Caleb said, Whoever strikes Kiriath-sefer and takes it, I will give him my daughter Acsa for a wife.
And Otniel, the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, younger than he, took her: and Caleb gave him his daughter Acsa as wife.
And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask his father for a field; And she got off the donkey, jumping, and Caleb said to him, What is it that you have?
And she said to him, Give me a blessing; because you gave me a dry land, also give me springs of water. And Caleb gave him the upper and lower sources.
The children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up the city of palms with the children of Judah to the desert of Judah, which is south of Arad: and they went and lived with the people.
So Judah went with his brother Simeon, and smote the Canaanites who lived in Zephate: and they completely destroyed it, and called the name of this city Hormá.
Judah took Gaza more by its end, and Ascalom by its end, and Ecrom by its end.
And the Lord went with Judah, and depopulated the mountains: but he did not expel the inhabitants of the valley, because they had charred cars.
And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said: and from there he expelled three sons of Enak.
But the sons of Benjamin did not expel the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem: before, the Jebusites lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem, to this day.
And Joseph went up to Bethel, and the Lord went with them.
And he made Joseph's house spy on Bethel: and the name of this city was Luz before.
And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and said to him, Now show us the entrance to the city, and we will use you with charity.
And showing them the entrance to the city, they struck the city with the edge of the sword: but they let that man and all his family go.
Then that man left the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called his name Luz; this is his name to this day.
Nor did Manasseh expel the inhabitants of Beth-heam, nor from the places under his jurisdiction; nor the Taanaque, with the places of its jurisdiction; nor to the residents of Dor, with the places within their jurisdiction; nor the residents of Ibleão, with the places and their jurisdiction; nor the inhabitants of Megiddo, with the places of their jurisdiction: and the Canaanites wanted to live in the same land.
And it came to pass that when Israel demanded more strength, it made the Canaanites taxable: but it did not expel them at all.
Nor did he expel Ephraim from the Canaanites who lived in Gezer: before, the Canaanites lived in the midst of him in Gezer.
Neither did he expel Zebulun to the inhabitants of Chitrom, nor to the inhabitants of Naalol: but the Canaanites lived in the middle of it, and were tributaries.
Nor did Aser expel the inhabitants of Steel, nor the inhabitants of Sidom; like neither Acbal, nor Aczibe, nor Helba, nor Afique, nor Recobe;
But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites who dwelt in the land: because they did not expel them.
Neither did Naphtali expel the inhabitants of Beth-Semes, nor the residents of Beth-Anate; but he dwelt among the Canaanites who dwelt in the land: but the inhabitants of Beth-Semes of Beth-Anate were taxed to them.
And the Amorites pressed the children of Dan into the mountains, because they would not let them go down into the valley.
The Amorites also wanted to live in the mountains of Heres, in Ajalon and in Saalbim: but the hand of Joseph's house prevailed, and they became tributaries.
And it was the term of the Amorites since the ascent of Acrabin: from the rock, and from there upwards.
