Joshua exhorts the people to observe the law of the Lord
1 And it came to pass that, many days after the Lord had given Israel rest from all its enemies around, and Joshua was old and coming in days,
2 He called Joshua to all Israel, to his elders, and to their heads, and to their judges, and to their officers, and said to them, I am old and coming into days;
3 And you have already seen all that the Lord your God has done for all these nations because of you: for the Lord your God is he who fought for you.
4 You see here that I caused you to fall into luck among your tribes, these nations that remain from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have destroyed, to the great sea for the sunset.
5 And the Lord your God will drive them out before you, and will drive them out before you: and you will possess their land, as the Lord your God has told you.
6 Strive, therefore, to keep yourselves and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses: lest you become alienated from it, neither to the right nor to the left;
7 So that you do not enter these nations that are still with you: and make no mention of the names of their gods, neither make them swear, nor serve them, nor bow down to them.
8 But you will draw near to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.
9 For the Lord has cast out before you great and numerous nations: and as for you to this day.
10 One man among you will pursue a thousand: for it is the same Lord your God who fights for you, as I have already told you.
11 Therefore, keep your souls very much, that you may love the Lord your God.
12 For in some way you will depart, and draw near to the rest of these nations that remain with you, and be like them, and you will enter them, and they will come to you.
13 Know that surely the Lord your God will no longer expel these nations from before you, but they will be a snare and a net for you, and will whip your sides and thorns in your eyes; until you perish from this good land that the Lord your God has given you.
14 And behold, here I am today on the way of all the earth: and you know, with all your heart, and with all your soul, that not a word has fallen from all the good words that the Lord your God; all have come upon you, not a word has fallen from them.
15 And it will be that, just as all these good things came upon you, which the Lord your God told you, so will the Lord bring all those bad things upon you, until he has destroyed you from the good land which the Lord your God has given you.
16 When you go through the covenant of the Lord your God, who has commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down to them, then the Lord's wrath will be kindled upon you, and you will soon perish from the good land he has given you. .
