1 Then the men of Ephraim were summoned, and went to the north, and said to Jephthah, Why did you proceed to fight against the children of Ammon, and not call us? we will burn your house with fire.

2 And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people had a great strife with the children of Ammon: and I called you, and you were not delivered from his hand;

3 And when I saw that you could not deliver me, I put my soul in my hand, and the Lord gave them into my hands: why did you come up against me today, to fight against me?

4 And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim; for the Giliadits being between Ephraim and Manasseh said, You are fugitives from Ephraim.

5 But the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan to the Ephraimites: and it came to pass, when the fugitives from Ephraim said, I will pass over; then the men of Gilead said to them, Are you Ephraimite? And he said, No;

6 Then they said to them, Say therefore, Chibolete; but he said, "Sibolete, because he couldn’t pronounce it that well: then they took him and slaughtered him in the fords of the Jordan; and at that time forty-two thousand fell from Ephraim.

7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years: and Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead.

1 Then Jephthah the Gileadite was brave and valiant, but the son of a prostitute: but Gilead had begotten Jephthah.

2 Gilead's wife also gave him children, and when this woman's children were already great, they repelled Jephthah and said to him, "You shall not inherit in our father's house, because you are the son of another woman."

3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and light men gathered with Jephthah, and went out with him.

4 And it came to pass that, after a few days, the children of Ammon fought against Israel.

5 So it came to pass, as the children of Ammon fought against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to seek Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6 And they said to Jephthah, Come, and be our head: that we may fight against the children of Ammon.

7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Did you not bore me and repel me from my father's house? why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?

8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, Therefore we return to you, that he may come with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 Then Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you take me back to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Lord shows me before me, then will I be your head?"

10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, The Lord will be a witness among us, and we will do it according to your word.

11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over him: and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What is between you and me, who came to me to fight against my land?

13 And the king of the children of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel went out of Egypt, he took my land, from Arnon to Jabbok, and even to the Jordan;

14 But Jephthah went on to send messengers to the king of the children of Ammon,

15 Saying to him, Thus says Jephthah, Israel did not take either the land of the Moabites or the land of the children of Ammon;

16 For when Israel came up from Egypt, she walked through the desert to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh.

17 And Israel sent messengers to the king of the Edomites, saying, I beg you to let me pass through your land. But the king of the Edomites did not listen to him. He also sent to the king of Moab, who also did not want to: and so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

18 Then he went through the desert and surrounded the land of the Edomites and the land of the Moabites, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of the Moabites, and they took refuge beyond Arnon; but they did not enter the limits of the Moabites, because Arnon is the limit of the Moabites.

19 But Israel sent messengers to Seon, king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon: and Israel said to him, Leave us, I beg you to pass through your land to my place.

20 But Seon did not trust Israel to pass over its borders; before, he gathered all his people together, and they camped at Jasa, and fought against Isrrael.

21 And the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Seon with all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: and Israel inherited all the land of the Amorites that dwelt in that land.

22 And by inheritance they took all the borders of the Amorites, from Arnon to Jabbok, and from the desert to the Jordan.

23 So the Lord God of Israel dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel: and would you possess them?

27 Nor have I sinned against you! but you use me badly to fight against me: the Lord, who is a judge, judges today among the children of Israel and among the children of Ammon.

29 Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and passed through him through Gilead and Manasseh: because he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead to the children of Ammon.

30 And Jephthah vowed a vow to the Lord and said, If you give me the children of Ammon in my hand,

31 Whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me, and I return from the children of Ammon in peace, it will be the Lord's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering.

32 So Jephthah spent the sons of Ammon fighting against them: and the Lord gave them into his hand.

33 And he smote them with great slaughter, from Aroer to Minite, around cities, and even to Abel-Cheramim; so the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 So Jephthah came to Mizpah, to his house, and behold, his daughter went out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was the only one; he had no other son and no daughter.

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, Ah! my daughter, you have killed me a lot, and you are among those who disturb me! because I opened my mouth to the Lord, and I will not go back.

36 And she said to him, My father, have you opened your mouth to the Lord, do to me as it came out of your mouth: for the Lord avenged you on your enemies, the children of Ammon.

37 He said to his father, "Do this to me. Leave me for two months to go and go down the hills and weep for my virginity, me and my companions."

38 And he said, Go. And he let her go for two months: then she left with her companions, and wept her virginity over the mountains.

39 And it came to pass that, after two months, she returned to her father, who fulfilled his vow in her that he had voted: and he knew no man; and from here custom came in Israel,

40 That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to mourn the daughter of Jephthah, the Gileadite, for four days a year.

14 Porém Jefté prosseguiu ainda em enviar mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom,
15 Dizendo-lhe : Assim diz Jefté: Israel não tomou, nem a terra dos moabitas nem a terra dos filhos de Amom;
16 Porque, subindo Israel do Egito, andou pelo deserto até ao Mar Vermelho, e chegou até Cades.
17 E Israel enviou mensageiros ao rei dos edomitas, dizendo: Rogo-te que me deixes passar pela tua terra. Porém o rei dos edomitas não lhe deu ouvidos. Enviou também ao rei dos moabitas, o qual também não quis: e assim Israel ficou em Cades.
18 Depois andou pelo deserto e rodeou a terra os edomitas e a terra dos moabitas, e veio do nascente do Sol à terra dos moabitas, e alojaram-se dalém de Arnom; porém não entraram nos limites dos moabitas, porque Arnom é limite dos moabitas.
19 Mas Israel enviou mensageiros a Seom, rei dos amorreus, rei de Hesbom: e disse-lhe Israel: Deixa-nos, peço-te passar pela tua terra até ao meu lugar.
20 Porém Seom não se fiou de Israel para este passar nos seus limites; antes Seom ajuntou todo o seu povo, e se acamparam em Jasa, e combateu contra Isrrael.
21 E o Senhor Deus de Israel deu a Seom com todo o seu povo na mão de Israel, e os feriram: e Israel tomou por herança toda a terra dos amorreus que habitavam naquela terra.
22 E por herança tomaram todos os limites dos amorreus, desde Arnom até jaboque, e desde o deserto até ao Jordão.
23 Assim o Senhor Deus de Israel desapossou os amorreus de diante do seu povo de Israel: e os possuirias tu?
24 Não possuirias tu aquele que Camós, teu deus, desapossasse de diante de ti? assim possuiremos nós todos quanto o Senhor nosso Deus desapossar de diante de nós.
25 Agora pois é tu ainda melhor do que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei dos moabitas? porventura contendeu ele em algum tempo com Israel, ou pelejou alguma vez contra ele?
26 Enquanto Israel habitou trezentos anos em Hesbom e nas suas vilas, e em Aroer e nas suas vilas, em todas as cidades que estão ao longo de Arnom, por que o não recuperaste naquele tempo?
27 Tão pouco pequei eu contra ti! porém tu usas mal comigo em pelejar contra mim: o Senhor, que é juiz, julgue hoje entre os filhos de Israel e entre os filhos de Amom.

30 E Jefté votou um voto ao Senhor  e disse: Se totalmente me deres os filhos de Amom na minha mão,
31 Aquilo que, saindo da porta de minha casa, me sair ao encontro, voltando eu dos filhos de Amom  em paz, isso será do Senhor, e o oferecerei em holocausto.
32 Assim Jefté passou os filhos de Amom, a combater contra eles: e o Senhor os deu na sua mão.
33 E os feriu com grande mortandade, desde Aroer até chegar a Minite, cinte cidades, e até Abel-Queramim; assim foram subjulgados os filhos de Amom diante dos filhos de Israel.
34 Vindo pois Jefté a Mizpá, à sua casa, eis que a sua filha lhe saiu ao encontro dom adufes e com danças: e era ela só a única; não tinha outro filho e nem filha.
35 E aconteceu que, quando a viu, rasgou os seus vestidos, e disse: Ah! filha minha, muito me abateste, e és dentre os que me turbam! porque eu abri a minha boca ao Senhor, e não tornarei atrás.
36 E ela lhe disse: Pai meu, abriste tu a tua boca ao Senhor, faze de mim como saiu da tua boca: pois o Senhor te vingou dos teus inimigos, os filhos de Amom.
37 Disse mais a seu pai: Faça-se-me isto: deixa-me por dois meses que vá e desça pelos montes, e chore a minha virgindade, eu e as minhas companheiras.
38 E ele disse: Vai. E deixou-a ir por dois meses: então foi-se ela com as suas companheiras, e chorou a sua virgindade pelos montes.
39 E sucedeu que, ao fim de dois meses tornou ela para seu pai, o qual cumpriu nela o seu voto que tinha votado: e ele não conheceu varão; e daqui veio costume em Israel,
40 Que as filhas de Israel iam de ano em ano a lamentar a filha de Jefté, o gileadita, por quatro dias ao ano.

22 So Abimelech had three years over Israel.
23 God sent an evil spirit between Abimemelech and the people of Shechem: and the people of Shechem were against Albamelech ally;
24 So that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubaal would come, and their blood would fall on Abimelech, his brother, who had killed them, and on the citizens of Shechem, who corroborated his hands, to kill his brothers.
25 And the people of Shechem set him against those who set him up in ambushes on mountain peaks; and everyone who passed by the path with them assaulted him: and it was told to Abimelech.
26 Gaal the son of Ebede also came with his brothers, and they passed into Shechem, and the citizens of Shechem took advantage of him.
27 And they went out into the field, and harvested their vineyards, and trodden the grapes, and made songs of praise: and went to the house of their God, and ate, and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Ebede said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubaal? and isn't Zebul your butler? rather I served the men of Hemor, Shechem's father: for what reason would we serve him?
29 Ah! if these people had been in my hand, I would expel Abimelech. And Abimelech said, Multiply your army and go out.
30 And when Zebul, the chief of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebede, his anger was kindled;
31 And he astutely sent messengers to Abimelech, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebede and his brothers came to Shechem, and, behold, they fortify this city against you.
32 Arise, then, at night, you and the people you had with you, and set ambushes in the field.
33 And rise in the morning when the sun comes out, and strike the city: and, behold, when he and the people that are with him go out against you, make him reach for your hand.

22 Havendo pois Abimeleque dominado três anos sobre Israel.
23 Enviou Deus um mau espírito entre Abimemeleque e os cidadãos de Siquém: e os cidadãos de Siquém se houveram aleivosamente contra Abimeleque;
24 Para que a violência feita aos setenta filhos de Jerubaal viesse, e o seu sangue caísse sobre Abimeleque, seu irmão, que os matara, e sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, que lhe corroboraram as mãos, para matar a seus irmãos.
25 E os cidadãos de Siquém puseram contra ele quem lhe armasse emboscadas sobre os cumes dos montes; e a todo aquele que passava pelo caminho junto a eles o assaltavam: e contou-se a Abimeleque.
26 Veio também Gaal, filho de Ebede, com seus irmãos, e passaram para dentro de Siquém: e os cidadãos de Siquém se fiaram dele.
27 E saíram ao campo, e vindimaram as suas vinhas, e pisaram as uvas, e fizeram canções de louvor: e foram à casa de seu Deus, e comeram, e beberam, e amaldiçoaram a Abimeleque.
28 E disse Gaal, filho de Ebede: Quem é Abimeleque, e quem é Siquém, para que o servíssemos? não é porventura filho de Jerubaal? e não é Zebul o seu mordomo? servi antes aos homens de Hemor, pai de Siquém: pois por que razão nós o serviríamos a ele?
29 Ah! se este povo estivera na minha mão, eu expeliria a Abimeleque. E a Abimeleque se disse: Multiplica o seu exército e sai.
30 E, ouvindo Zebul, o maioral da cidade, as palavras de Gaal, filho de Ebede, se acendeu a sua ira;
31 E enviou astutamente mensageiros a Abimeleque, dizendo: Eis que Gaal, filho de Ebede, e seus irmãos vieram a Siquém, e eis que eles fortificam esta cidade contra ti.
32 Levanta-te pois de noite, tu e o povo que tiveste contigo, e póe emboscadas no campo.
33 E, levanta-te pela manhã ao sair o sol, e dá golpe sobre a cidade: e eis que, saindo ele e o povo que tiver com ele contra ti, faze-lhe alcançar a tua mão.
