The Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 14
The Justice of God's Punishments
The word of the Lord came to me again:
“Son of man, when a land sins against me by acting treacherously, I will stretch out my hand against it and make its food supply unstable. I will send famine against it and cut off from it both man and beast.
Even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job—were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness,” declares the Sovereign Lord.
“If I cause wild beasts to pass through the land, and they ravage it, so that it becomes desolate and no one can pass through it because of the wild beasts,
Even if these three men were in it, as surely as I live,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “they would deliver neither sons nor daughters; they alone would be delivered, and the land would be desolate.”
Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, “Sword, go through the land,” and I cut off from it man and beast;
Even if those three men were in it, as I live, says the Lord GOD, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they alone would be delivered.
Or if I send pestilence upon that land, and pour out my wrath upon it with bloodshed, to cut off from it man and beast;
Even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, says the Lord GOD, they would deliver neither son nor daughter, but only their own souls by their righteousness.
For thus says the Lord GOD: How much more, if I send my four severe judgments against Jerusalem, the sword, and famine, and wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
But behold, some will remain in it, who will be carried away, both sons and daughters; Behold, they will come to you, and you will see their way and their deeds; and you will be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and concerning all that I have brought upon her.
And you will be comforted when you see their way and their deeds; and you will know that I have not done without reason all that I have done in her, says the Lord God.
