Abimelech kills his brothers and declares himself king
And Abimelech son of Jerubaal went to Shechem, to his mother's brothers, and spoke to them, and to all the generations of his mother's father's house, saying,
Speak, I ask you, in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem: Which is better for you, that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubaal, rule over you, or that one man rules over you? Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
Then his mother's brothers spoke about him in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem, all those words: and their hearts bowed after Abimelech, because they said, He is our brother.
And they gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of Baal-Berite: and Abimelech hired some idle and frivolous men, who followed him.
And he came to his father's house, Ophrah, and killed his brothers, the sons of Jerubaal, seventy men, on a stone. But Jotão, Jerubaal's youngest son, stayed because he had gone into hiding.
Then all the citizens of Shechem and the whole house of Milo gathered together: and they went, and raised Abimelech as king, by the tall oak that is near Shechem.
