 The Book of the Prophet Joel 2

1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near.

2 A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the dawn spreading over the mountains, a great and powerful people, such as never was before, nor will be again after them, even to many generations.

3 Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame burns; the land before them is like the garden of Eden, but behind them a desolate wilderness; nothing escapes them.

4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; they run like horsemen.

5 Like the rumbling of chariots on the mountaintops they leap; like the noise of a flame of fire consuming stubble, like a mighty people arrayed for battle.

6 Before him the peoples will tremble; every face will be like the blackening of a pot.

7 Like mighty men they will run, like warriors they will scale the walls; each will go in his own path and will not turn aside from his rank.

8 No one will jostle his brother; each will run in his own lane; they will rush upon the sword and not be wounded.

9 They will go through the city, they will run along the walls, they will climb into the houses, they will enter through the windows like a thief.

10 Before him the earth will tremble, the heavens will shake; the sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will withdraw their shining.

11 And the Lord raises his voice before his army, for his camps are very many, for he is mighty, executing his word; for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible, and who can endure it?

12 Yet even now, declares the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.

13 Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing—grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God.

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, proclaim a sacred assembly.

16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, “Spare your people, O Lord, and do not give your heritage to reproach, that the nations should mock them; why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”

1 Tocai a buzina em Sião, e clamai em alta voz no monte da minha santidade: perturbem-se todos os moradores da terra, porque o dia do Senhor vem, ele está perto;

2 Dia de trevas e de tristeza; dia de nuvens e de trevas espessas, como a alva espalhada sobre os montes, povo grande e poderoso, qual desde o tempo antigo nunca houve, nem depois dele haverá pelos anos adiante, de geração em geração.

3 Diante dele um fogo consome; e atrás dele uma chama abrasa: a terra diante dele é como o jardim do Éden, mas atrás dele um desolado deserto; sim, nada lhe escapará.

4 O seu parecer é como o parecer de cavalos: e correrão como cavaleiros.

5 Como o estrondo de carros sobre os cumes dos montes irão eles saltando; como o ruído da chama de fogo que consome a pragana, como um povo poderoso, ordenado para o combate.

6 Diante dele temerão os povos; todos os rostos são como a tisnadura da panela.

7 Como valentes correrão, como homens de guerra subirão os muros; e irá cada um nos seus caminhos e não se desviarão da sua fileira.

8 Ninguém apertará a seu irmão; irá cada um pelo seu carreiro; sobre a mesma espada se arremessarão, e não serão feridos.

9 Irão pela cidade, correrão pelos muros, subirão às casas, pelas janelas entrarão como o ladrão.

10 Diante dele tremerá a terra, abalar-se-ão os céus; o sol e a lua se enegrecerão, e as estrelas retirarão o seu resplendor.

11 E o Senhor levanta a sua voz diante do seu exército, porque muitíssimos são os seus arraiais, porque poderoso é, executando a sua palavra; porque o dia do Senhor é grande e mui terrível, e quem o poderá sofrer?

12 Ainda assim, agora mesmo diz o Senhor: Convertei-vos a mim de todo o vosso coração; e isso com jejuns, e com choro, e com pranto.

13 E rasgai o vosso coração, e não os vossos vestidos, e convertei-vos ao Senhor vosso Deus; porque ele é misericordioso, e compassivo, e tardio em irar-se, e grande em beneficência, e se arrepende do mal.

14 Quem sabe se se voltará e se arrependerá, e deixará após si uma bênção, em oferta de manjar e libação para o Senhor vosso Deus?

15 Tocai a buzina em Sião, santificai um jejum, proclamai um dia de proibição.

16 Congregai o povo, santificai a congregação, ajuntai os anciãos, congregai filhinhos, e os que mamam: saia o noivo da sua recâmara, e a noiva do seu tálamo.

17 Chorem os sacerdotes, ministros do Senhor, entre o alpendre e o altar, e digam: Poupa a teu povo, ó Senhor, e não entregues a tua herança ao opróbrio, para que as nações façam escárnio dele; porque diriam entre os povos: Onde está o seu Deus?

The terrible famine caused by locusts and drought

1 The word of the Lord that came to Joel, son of Pethuel.

2 Hear this, you elders, and listen, all you inhabitants of the land: Has anything like this ever happened in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

3 Tell your children about it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

4 What the caterpillar left, the locust ate; what the locust left, the grasshopper ate; and what the grasshopper left, the cankerworm ate.

5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine, for it has been taken from your mouths.

6 For a nation has come up against my land, powerful and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and it has the jaws of a wild lion.

7 He has made my vine a desolation, and stripped my fig tree bare; he has utterly stripped it, and cast it down; its branches have become white.

8 Lament like a virgin clothed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9 The grain offering and the drink offering have been cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the Lord’s ministers, mourn.

10 The field is desolate, the ground mourns; for the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil fails.

11 The farmers are ashamed, the vinedressers groan, over the wheat and the barley; because the harvest of the field has perished.

12 The vine has dried up, the fig tree has withered; the pomegranate tree also, and the palm tree and the apple tree; all the trees of the field have dried up, and joy has dried up among the children of men.

13 Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; wail, you ministers of the altar; go in and spend the night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God; for the grain offering and the drink offering have been cut off from the house of your God.

14 Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

15 Alas for that day! For the day of the Lord is near, and it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

16 Is not the food cut off before our eyes? Joy and gladness from the house of our God?

17 The seed has rotted under its clods, the barns are desolate, the storehouses are broken down, for the grain has dried up.

18 How the cattle groan! The herds of cattle are confused because they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep are destroyed.

1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.

2 Take words with you, and return to the Lord; say to him, “Put away all iniquity, and receive good; and we will offer the sacrifices of our lips like calves.”

3 Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on horses, nor will we say to the work of our hands, “You are our God”; for in you the orphan finds mercy.

4 I will heal their backsliding; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them.

5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily and spread his roots like Lebanon.

6 Its branches will spread out, and its glory will be like that of the olive tree, its fragrance like Lebanon.

7 Those who dwell in its shade will return; they will be revived like grain, and flourish like the vine; their memory will be like the wine of Lebanon.

8 Ephraim will say, “What more have I to do with idols? I have heard it, and I will consider it; I am like a green fir tree: from me comes your fruit.”

9 Who is wise enough to understand these things? Who is prudent enough to know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, and the righteous will walk in them, but the transgressors will stumble in them.

1 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling: he was exalted in Israel; but he became guilty in Baal, and died.

2 And now they have multiplied sins, and from their silver they have made a molten image, idols according to their understanding, all the work of craftsmen, of whom they say: Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves.

3 Therefore they will be like the morning cloud, and like the early dew that passes away: like chaff that the storm drives from the threshing floor, and like smoke from the chimney.

4 Yet I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt; therefore you shall acknowledge no other god besides me, for there is no Savior besides me.

5 I knew you in the wilderness, in a very dry land.

6 Then they were filled according to their pasture; being filled, their heart was lifted up, therefore they forgot me.

7 I will be like a lion to them; like a leopard I will lurk by the road.

8 Like a bear that has lost its cubs, I will meet them; I will tear open the webs of their hearts; and there I will devour them like a lion; the wild beasts of the field will tear them to pieces.

9 You have rebelled against me, Israel, to your destruction, against your helper.

10 Where is your king now, to guard you in all your cities? And your judges, of whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?

11 I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up, his sin is stored up.

13 Pains of a woman in labor will come upon her; she is an unwise child; for it is time, and she is not in the place where she should be born.

14 I will ransom them from the violence of hell, and I will redeem them from death: where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O hell, is your destruction? Repentance will be hidden from my eyes.

5 The inhabitants of Samaria will be terrified by the calf of Beth-Aven, for its people will mourn because of it, as will its priests (who rejoiced in it), and because of its glory, which it has departed from them.

6 Assyria will also be taken as a gift to King Jareb; Ephraim will be confounded, and Israel will be ashamed because of its own counsel.

7 The king of Samaria will be consumed like foam on the face of the water.

8 And the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed; thorns and thistles will grow on their altars; and they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

9 From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; there they remained; the battle in Gibeah against the sons of wickedness will not overtake them.

10 I will punish them according to my desire; and the peoples will gather against them, when I bind them to their transgressions.

12 Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap unfailing love, break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.
