1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! declares the Lord.

2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the shepherds who tend my people: “You have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them. I will surely punish you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord.

3 I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their folds, where they will be fruitful and increase in number.

4 I will set shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.

1 Ai dos pastores que destroem e dispersam as ovelhas do meu pasto, diz o Senhor.

2 Portanto assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, acerca dos pastores que apascentam o meu povo: Vós dispersastes as minhas ovelhas, e as afugentastes, e não as visitastes: eis que visitarei sobre vós a maldade das vossas ações, diz o Senhor.

3 E eu mesmo recolherei o resto das minhas ovelhas, de todas as terras para onde as tiver afugentado, e as farei voltar aos seus apriscos; e frutificarão, e se multiplicarão.

4 E levantarei sobre elas pastores que as apascentem, e nunca mais temerão, nem se assombrarão, e nem uma delas faltará, diz o Senhor.

Prophecy against the royal house of Judah

1 Thus says the Lord: Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and declare there this word.

2 And say: Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David, you and your servants and your people who enter through these gates.

3 Thus says the Lord: Execute justice and righteousness, and deliver the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor; do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow; do not do violence, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

4 For if you truly obey this word, then kings who sit on the throne of David will enter through the gates of this house, riding on chariots and horses, they and their servants and their people.

5 But if you do not listen to these words, I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that this house will become a desolation.

6 For this is what the Lord says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like Gilead to me, and the head of Lebanon; but I will surely make you a desert and uninhabited cities.

7 For I have prepared destroyers against you, each with his weapons; they will cut down your choice cedars and throw them into the fire.

8 Many nations will pass by this city, and each will say to his neighbor, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this great city?’

9 They will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have bowed down to other gods and served them.’

10 Do not weep for the dead or mourn for them; weep bitterly for him who departs, for he will never return, nor will he see the land of his birth.”

11 For thus says the Lord concerning Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned in place of Josiah his father, who went out from this place: He shall not return there again.

12 But in the place where they have taken him captive he shall die, and shall never see this land again.

13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice, who uses his neighbor’s service without wages, and does not give him the wages of his labor;

14 Who says, “I will build myself a spacious house, and large rooms,” and he cuts out windows for it, and it is paneled with cedar and painted with vermilion.

15 Will you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, and exercise justice and righteousness? Therefore it went well with him.

16 He judged the cause of the afflicted and needy; then it went well with him. Is not this what it means to know me? Thus says the Lord.

17 But their eyes and your heart are set only on your greed, and on shedding innocent blood, and on oppression and violence, to carry it out.

18 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiachin, son of Josiah, king of Judah: They shall not mourn for him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” or “Alas, my sister!” Nor shall they mourn for him, saying, “Alas, Lord!” or “Alas, Majestic One!”

19 They shall bury him like a donkey’s grave, dragging him away and throwing him far outside the gates of Jerusalem.

20 Go up to Lebanon and cry out, and lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry out from Abarim, for your lovers are broken.

21 I spoke to myself of your prosperity, but you said, “I will not listen.” This is your way from your youth, for you have never listened to my voice.

22 The wind will sweep away all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity: surely then you will be confounded and ashamed because of all your wickedness.

23 O you who dwell in Lebanon and make your nest in the cedars! How afflicted you will be when pains and sorrows come upon you, like those of a woman in labor!

24 As I live, says the Lord, even if Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you from there.

25 And I will deliver you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those before whom you are afraid, namely, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

26 And I will cast you and your mother who bore you into a foreign land, where you were not born, and there you shall die.

27 But to the land to which they lift up their soul, to return, they shall not return.

28 Is this man Jeconiah a vile, broken vessel? Or a vessel in which no one delights? Why were they cast out, he and his generation, and hurled into a land they do not know?

29 O earth, earth, earth! Hear the word of the Lord.

30 Thus says the Lord: Write that this man is bereaved of his children, and is a man who will not prosper in his days; nor will any of his generation prosper, to sit on the throne of David and reign again in Judah.

1 Assim diz o Senhor: Desce à casa do rei de Judá, e anuncia ali esta palavra.

2 E dize: Ouve a palavra do Senhor, ó rei de Judá, que te assentas no trono de Davi; tu, e os teus servos, e o teu povo, que entrais por estas portas.

3 Assim diz o Senhor: Exercei o juízo e a justiça, e livrai o espoliado da mão do opressor; e não oprimais ao estrangeiro, nem ao órfão, nem à viúva; não façais violência, nem derrameis sangue inocente neste lugar.

4 Porque, se deveras cumprirdes esta palavra, entrarão pelas portas desta casa os reis que se assentam no lugar de Davi sobre o seu trono, em carros e montados em cavalos, eles, e os seus servos, e o seu povo.

5 Mas se não derdes ouvidos a estas palavras, por mim mesmo tenho jurado, diz o Senhor, que esta casa se tornará em assolação.

6 Porque assim diz o Senhor acerca da casa do rei de Judá: Tu és para mim Gileade, e a cabeça do Líbano: mas por certo que farei de ti um deserto e cidades desabitadas.

10 Não choreis o morto, nem o lastimeis: chorai abundantemente aquele que sai, porque nunca mais tornará, nem verá a terra onde nasceu.

11 Porque assim diz o Senhor acerca de Salum, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, que reinou em lugar de Josias seu pai, que saiu deste lugar: Nunca ali tornará mais.

12 Mas no lugar para onde o levaram cativo morrerá, e nunca mais verá esta terra.

13 Ai daquele que edifica a sua casa com injustiça, e os seus aposentos sem direito, que se serve do serviço do seu próximo sem paga, e não lhe dá o salário do seu trabalho;

14 Que diz: Edificarei para mim uma casa espaçosa, e aposentos largos: e lhe abre janelas, e está forrada de cedro, e pintada de vermelhão.

15 Reinarás tu, porque te encerras em cedro? Acaso teu pai não comeu e bebeu, e não exercitou o juízo e a justiça? Por isso lhe sucedeu bem.

16 Julgou a causa do aflito e do necessitado; então lhe sucedeu bem; porventura não é isto conhecer-me? Diz o Senhor.

17 Mas os seus olhos e o teu coração não atentam senão para a tua avareza, e para o sangue inocente, a fim de derramá-lo, e para a opressão, e para a violência, a fim de levar isso a efeito.

18 Portanto assim diz o Senhor acerca de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá: Não lamentarão por ele, dizendo: Ai, irmão meu, ou: Ai, minha irmã! Nem lamentarão por ele, dizendo: Ai, Senhor, ou: Ai, Majestoso!

19 Em sepultura de jumento o sepultarão, arrastando-o e lançando-o para bem longe, fora das portas de Jerusalém.

20 Sobe ao Líbano, e clama, e levanta a tua voz em Basã, e clama desde Abarim, porque estão quebrantados os teus namorados.

21 Falei comigo da tua prosperidade, mas tu disseste: Não ouvirei. Este é o teu caminho, desde a tua mocidade, pois nunca deste ouvidos à minha voz.

22 O vento apascentará todos os teus pastores, e os teus namorados irão para o cativeiro: certamente então te confundirás, e te envergonharás, por causa de toda a tua maldade.

23 Ó tu, que habitas no Líbano e fazes o teu ninho nos cedros! Quão lastimada serás quando te vierem as dores e os ais como da que está de parto!

24 Vivo eu, diz o Senhor, que ainda que Jeconias filho de Joaquim, rei de Judá, fosse o selo do anel da minha mão direita, eu dali te arrancaria.

25 E te entregarei na mão dos que buscam a tua vida, e na mão daqueles diante de quem tu temes, a saber, na mão de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, e na mão dos caldeus.

26 E lançar-te-ei, a ti e à tua mãe que te deu à luz, para uma terra estranha, em que não nasceste, e ali morrereis.

27 Mas à terra, para a qual eles levantam a sua alma, para ali tornarem, a ela não tornarão.

28 É, pois este homem Jeconias um vil vaso quebrado? Ou um vaso de que ninguém se agrada? Por que razão foram arremessados fora, ele e a sua geração, e arrojados para uma terra que não conhecem?

29 Ó terra, terra, terra! Ouve a palavra do Senhor.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur son of Malchiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, saying:

2 “Inquire now of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is waging war against us. Perhaps the Lord will work for us according to all His wonders, and cause him to withdraw from us.”

3 Then Jeremiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah:

4 Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will turn against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls, and I will gather them into the midst of this city.’” 

5 And I will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, with anger, and with indignation, and with great fury.

6 And I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they shall die of a great pestilence.

7 And after this, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and those who remain in this city from the pestilence, and from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their lives; and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, nor have pity, nor show mercy.

8 And to this people you shall say: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

9 He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, or by famine, or by pestilence; But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live, and their life will be given as a prize.

10 For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.

11 And you shall say to the house of the king of Judah: Hear the word of the Lord.

12 O house of David, thus says the Lord: Judge righteously in the morning, and deliver the plundered from the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with no one to quench it, because of the wickedness of your deeds.

13 Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the plain, declares the Lord: against you who say, “Who will come down against us?” Or, “Who will enter our dwellings?”

14 And I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds, declares the Lord; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, which will consume everything around her.

1 A palavra que veio a Jeremias da parte do Senhor, quando o rei Zedequias lhe enviou a Pasur, filho de Malquias, e a Zefanias, filho de Maaséias, o sacerdote, dizendo:

2 Pergunta agora por nós ao Senhor porque Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, guerreia contra nós: bem pode ser que o Senhor opere conosco segundo todas as suas maravilhas, e o faça retirar-se de nós.

3 Então Jeremias lhes disse: Assim direis a Zedequias.

4 Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Eis que virarei contra vós as armas de guerra, que estão nas vossas mãos, com que vós pelejais contra o rei de Babilônia, e contra os caldeus que vos têm cercado fora dos muros, e ajuntá-los-ei no meio desta cidade.

5 E eu pelejarei contra vós com mão estendida, e com braço forte, e com ira, e com indignação e com grande furor.

6 E ferirei os habitantes desta cidade, assim os homens como os animais: de grande pestilência morrerão.

7 E depois disto, diz o Senhor, entregarei Zedequias, rei de Judá, e seus servos, e o povo, e os que desta cidade restarem da pestilência, e da espada, e da fome, na mão de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, e na mão de seus inimigos, e na mão dos que buscam a sua vida; e feri-los-á ao fio da espada: não os poupará, nem se compadecerá, nem terá misericórdia.

8 E a este povo dirás: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que ponho diante de vós o caminho da vida e o caminho da morte.

9 O que ficar nesta cidade há de morrer à espada, ou à fome, ou da pestilência; mas o que sair, e se render aos caldeus, que vos têm cercado, viverá, e terá a sua vida por despojo.

10 Porque pus o meu rosto contra esta cidade para mal, e não para bem, diz o Senhor: na mão do rei de Babilônia se entregará, e ele a queimará a fogo:

11 E à casa do rei de Judá dirás: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor.

12 Ó casa de Davi, assim diz o Senhor: Julgai pela manhã justamente, e livrai o espoliado da mão do opressor, para que não saia o meu furor como fogo, e se acenda, sem que haja quem o apague, por causa da maldade de vossas ações.

13 Eis que eu sou contra ti, ó moradora do vale, ó rocha da campina, diz o Senhor: contra vós que dizeis: Quem descerá contra nós? Ou: Quem entrará nas nossas moradas?

14 E eu vos visitarei segundo o fruto das vossas ações, diz o Senhor; e acenderei o fogo no seu bosque, que consumirá a tudo o que está em redor dela.

1 Now Pashur son of Immer, the priest, who was appointed chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.

2 Then Pashur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the Lord.

3 The next day Pashur released Jeremiah from the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call you Pashur, but Magor-Missabib.

4 For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon and put them to death with the sword.’” 

5 I will also give all the wealth of this city, and all its produce, and all its precious things; yes, all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.

6 And you, Pashhur, and all the inhabitants of your house will go into captivity; and you will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you prophesied falsely.

7 You deceived me, O Lord, and I was deceived; you were stronger than I, and you prevailed: I am a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.

8 For whenever I speak, I cry out; I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become a reproach to me, and a derision all day long.

9 Then I said, “I will not mention him, nor speak any more in his name.” But his word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it in, and I could not.

10 For I heard the whispering of many, terror on every side: “Denounce him! We will denounce him!” All my friends are at peace with me, waiting for me to stumble. They say, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail against him and take our revenge on him.”

11 But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will be utterly ashamed, because they have not acted wisely; their eternal disgrace will never be forgotten.

12 You, Lord Almighty, who test the righteous and see the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.

13 Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord; For he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.

14 Cursed be the day on which I was born; may the day on which my mother bore me not be blessed.

15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, “A son is born to you,” making him very glad.

16 May this man be like the cities that the Lord destroyed without repentance; may he hear a cry in the morning and an outcry at midday.

17 Why did he not kill me from the womb? Or why was my mother not my grave? Or why was she not perpetually pregnant?

18 Why did I come forth from the womb to see toil and sorrow, and that my days should be consumed in confusion?

6 E tu, Pasur, e todos os moradores da tua casa ireis para o cativeiro; e virás a Babilônia, e ali morrerás, e ali serás sepultado, tu, e todos os teus amigos, aos quais profetizaste falsamente.

7 Iludiste-me, ó Senhor, e iludido fiquei; mais forte foste do que eu, e prevaleceste: sirvo de escárnio todo o dia; cada um deles zomba de mim.

8 Porque desde que falo, grito; clamo: Violência e destruição; porque se tornou a palavra do Senhor um opróbrio para mim, e um ludíbrio todo o dia.

9 Então disse eu: Não me lembrarei dele, e não falarei mais no seu nome; mas isso foi no meu coração como fogo ardente, encerrado nos meus ossos; e estou fatigado de sofrer, e não posso.

10 Porque ouvi murmuração de muitos, terror de todos os lados: Denunciai-no-lo, e o denunciaremos; todos os que têm paz comigo aguardam o meu manquejar, dizendo: Bem pode ser que se deixe persuadir; então prevaleceremos contra ele e nos vingaremos dele.

11 Mas o Senhor está comigo como um valente terrível; por isso tropeçarão os meus perseguidores, e não prevalecerão: ficarão mui confundidos; como não se houveram prudentemente, terão uma confusão perpétua que nunca se esquecerá.

12 Tu pois, ó Senhor dos Exércitos, que provas o justo, e vês os rins e o coração: veja eu a tua vingança sobre eles; pois te descobri a minha causa.

13 Cantai ao Senhor, louvai ao Senhor; pois livrou a alma do necessitado da mão dos malfeitores.

14 Maldito o dia em que nasci: o dia em que minha mãe me deu à luz não seja bendito.

15 Maldito o homem que deu as novas a meu pai, dizendo: Nasceu-te um filho; alegrando-o com isso grandemente.

16 E seja este homem como as cidades que o Senhor destruiu sem que se arrependesse: e ouça clamor pela manhã, e ao tempo do meio-dia um alarido.

17 Por que não me matou desde a madre? Ou minha mãe não foi minha sepultura? Ou não ficou grávida perpetuamente?

18 Por que saí da madre, para ver trabalho e tristeza, e para que se consumam os meus dias na confusão?

1 Thus says the Lord: Go and buy a potter's jar, and take with you the elders of the people and the elders of the priests.

2 And go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is at the entrance of the Sun Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you.

3 And say: Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring such great evil upon this place that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle.

4 Because they have forsaken me and have defiled this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, which neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

5 For they have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or speak of, nor did it enter my heart.

6 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when this place will no longer be called Topheth, nor the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.

7 For I will frustrate the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their lives; and I will give their corpses as food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.

8 And I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss because of all its plagues.

9 And I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his neighbor, in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their lives shall distress them.

10 Then you shall break the jar in the sight of the men who go with you.

11 And you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Thus I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again, and they shall bury them in Tophet, because there will be no other place to bury them.’”

12 Thus I will do to this place, says the Lord, and to its inhabitants; yes, to make this city like Tophet.

13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Tophet, as also all the houses on whose roofs they burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to strange gods.

14 Then Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of the house of the Lord and said to all the people:

15 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all its cities all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, so as not to hear my words.

1 Assim diz o Senhor: Vai, e compra uma botija de oleiro, e leva contigo os anciãos do povo e os anciãos dos sacerdotes.

2 E sai ao vale do filho de Hinom, que está à entrada da porta do sol, e apregoa ali as palavras que eu te disser.

3 E dize: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, ó reis de Judá, e moradores de Jerusalém: assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Eis que trarei tão grande mal sobre este lugar, que quem quer que dele ouvir retinir-lhe-ão as orelhas:

4 Porquanto me deixaram, e profanaram este lugar, e nele queimaram incenso a outros deuses, que nunca conheceram, nem eles nem seus pais, nem os reis de Judá; e encheram este lugar de sangue de inocentes.

5 Porque edificaram os altos de Baal, para queimarem seus filhos no fogo em holocaustos a Baal; o que nunca lhes ordenei, nem falei, nem subiu ao meu coração.

6 Por isso eis que dias vêm, diz o Senhor, em que este lugar não se chamará mais Tofete, nem vale do filho de Hinom, mas o vale da matança.

7 Porque dissiparei o conselho de Judá e de Jerusalém neste lugar, e os farei cair à espada diante de seus inimigos, e pela mão dos que buscam a vida deles; e darei os seus cadáveres por pasto às aves dos céus e aos animais da terra.

8 E porei esta cidade em espanto e por assobio: todo aquele que passar por ela se espantará e assobiará, por causa de todas as suas pragas.

9 E lhes farei comer a carne de seus filhos, e a carne de suas filhas, e comerá cada um a carne do seu próximo, no cerco e no aperto em que os apertarão os seus inimigos, e os que buscam a vida deles.

10 Então quebrarás a botija à vista dos homens que forem contigo.

11 E dir-lhe-ás: Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Deste modo quebrarei eu a este povo, e a esta cidade, como se quebra o vaso do oleiro, que não pode mais refazer-se, e os enterrarão em Tofete, porque não haverá outro lugar para os enterrar.

12 Assim farei a este lugar, diz o Senhor, e aos seus moradores; sim, para pôr a esta cidade como a Tofete.

13 E as casas de Jerusalém, e as casas dos reis de Judá, serão imundas como o lugar de Tofete: como também todas as casas, sobre cujos terraços queimaram incenso a todo o exército dos céus, e ofereceram libações a deuses estranhos.

14 Vindo pois Jeremias de Tofete, onde o tinha enviado o Senhor a profetizar, se pôs em pé no átrio da casa do Senhor, e disse a todo o povo:

15 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Eis que trarei sobre esta cidade, e sobre todas as suas cidades, todo o mal que pronunciei contra ela, porquanto endureceram a sua cerviz, para não ouvirem as minhas palavras.

9 और जिस समय मैं किसी देश और राज्य के बारे में कुछ कहता हूँ, उसे बनाने और रोपने के लिए,

10 अगर वह मेरी नज़र में बुरा करे, मेरी बात न माने, तो मैं उस भलाई से पीछे हट जाऊँगा जो मैंने उसके साथ करने की सोची थी।

19 हे प्रभु, मेरी तरफ़ देखो, और उन लोगों की आवाज़ सुनो जो मुझसे लड़ते हैं।

20 क्या बुराई का बदला अच्छाई से दिया जाएगा? क्योंकि उन्होंने मेरी जान के लिए गड्ढा खोदा है: याद रखो कि मैं उनके लिए अच्छा बोलने, तुम्हारा गुस्सा उनसे दूर करने के लिए तुम्हारे सामने खड़ा था।

1 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:

2 “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.”

3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done?” says the Lord. “Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.”

7 At the moment when I speak against a nation and against a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy.

8 If that nation, against which I have spoken, turns from its wickedness, then I will relent of the evil that I thought to do to it.

9 And at the moment I speak concerning a nation and a kingdom, to build and to plant it,

10 if it does evil in my sight, not obeying my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had said I would do to it.

11 Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I am forging evil against you, and I devise a plan against you; now therefore turn, each of you, from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.’

12 But they say, ‘There is no hope, for we shall walk after our own devices; and each one shall do according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”

13 Therefore thus says the Lord: “Ask now among the nations, who has heard of such a thing? The virgin of Israel has done a most horrible thing!”

14 Will the snow of Lebanon be forsaken for a rock in the field? Or will the strange, cold, flowing waters be forsaken?

15 Yet my people have forgotten me; they burn incense to worthless idols. They have made us stumble in their ways, in the paths that are far from level,

16 to make their land an astonishment and a perpetual derision; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and shake their head.

17 I will scatter them like an east wind before the enemy; I will show them my back and not my face in the day of their destruction.

18 Then they said, “Come, let us devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not heed any of his words.”

19 Look upon me, O Lord, and hear the voice of them that contend with me.

20 Shall evil be repaid for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul: remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 Therefore give their children over to famine, and deliver them to the power of the sword; let their wives be bereaved of their children, and let them be widows; and let their husbands be slain by the sword in battle.

22 Let the cry of their houses be heard, when thou shalt bring squadrons upon them suddenly. Therefore they have dug a pit to trap me, and laid snares for my feet.

23 But thou, O Lord, knowest all their counsel against me to kill me; pardon not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from before thy face: but let them stumble before thee; deal with them thus in the time of thy anger.

1 A palavra do Senhor, que veio a Jeremias, dizendo:

2 Levanta-te, e desce à casa do oleiro, e lá te farei ouvir as minhas palavras.

3 E desci à casa do oleiro, e eis que ele estava fazendo a sua obra sobre as rodas.

4 Como o vaso, que ele fazia de barro, se quebrou na mão do oleiro, tornou a fazer dele outro vaso, conforme o que pareceu bem aos seus olhos fazer.

5 Então veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

6 Não poderei eu fazer de vós como fez este oleiro, ó casa de Israel? Diz o Senhor: eis que, como o barro na mão do oleiro, assim sois vós na minha mão, ó casa de Israel.

7 No momento em que falar contra uma nação, e contra um reino para arrancar, e para derrubar, e para destruir.

8 Se a tal nação, contra a qual falar, se converter da sua maldade, também eu me arrependerei do mal que pensava fazer-lhe.

9 E no momento em que falar de uma gente e de um reino, para edificar e para plantar,

10 Se ela fizer o mal diante dos meus olhos, não dando ouvidos à minha voz, então me arrependerei do bem que tinha dito lhe faria.

11 Ora pois, fala agora aos homens de Judá, e aos moradores de Jerusalém, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que estou forjando mal contra vós, e projeto um plano contra vós; convertei-vos pois agora cada um do seu mau caminho, e melhorai os vossos caminhos e as vossas ações.

12 Mas eles dizem: Não há esperança, porque após as nossas imaginações andaremos: e fará cada um segundo o propósito do seu malvado coração.

13 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Perguntai agora entre os gentios quem ouviu tal coisa? Coisa mui horrenda fez a virgem de Israel!

14 Porventura deixar-se-á a neve do Líbano por uma rocha do campo? Ou deixar-se-ão as águas estranhas, frias e correntes?

15 Contudo o meu povo se tem esquecido de mim, queimando incenso à vaidade; e fizeram-nos tropeçar nos seus caminhos, e nas veredas afastadas, não aplainadas;

16 Para fazerem da sua terra um espanto e uma irrisão perpétua; todo aquele que passar por ela se espantará, e meneará a sua cabeça.

17 Com vento oriental os espalharei diante da face do inimigo: mostrar-lhes-ei as costas e não o rosto, no dia da sua perdição.

18 Então disseram: Vinde, e maquinemos projetos contra Jeremias; porquanto não perecerá a lei do sacerdote, nem o conselho do sábio, nem a palavra do profeta: vinde, e firamo-lo com a língua, e não escutemos nenhuma das suas palavras.

19 Olha para mim, Senhor, e ouve a voz dos que contendem comigo.

20 Porventura pagar-se-á mal por bem? Pois cavaram uma cova para a minha alma: lembra-te de que eu compareci na tua presença, para falar por seu bem, para desviar deles a tua indignação.

21 Portanto entrega seus filhos à fome, e entrega-os ao poder da espada, e sejam suas mulheres roubadas dos filhos, e fiquem viúvas; e seus maridos sejam feridos à espada na peleja.

22 Ouça-se o clamor de suas casas, quando trouxeres esquadrões sobre eles de repente. Portanto cavaram uma cova para prender-me e armaram laços aos meus pés.

23 Mas tu, ó Senhor, sabes todo o seu conselho contra mim para matar-me; não perdoes a sua maldade, nem apagues o seu pecado de diante da tua face: mas tropecem diante de ti; trata-os assim no tempo da tua ira.

21 प्रभु कहता है: अपना ध्यान रखो, और सब्त के दिन बोझ मत उठाओ, और न ही उन्हें यरूशलेम के गेट से अंदर लाओ।

27 लेकिन अगर तुम मेरी बात नहीं मानोगे, सब्त के दिन को पवित्र नहीं रखोगे, और सब्त के दिन यरूशलेम के फाटकों में कोई बोझ नहीं उठाओगे, तो मैं उसके फाटकों में आग लगा दूँगा, जो यरूशलेम के महलों को जला देगी, और वह कभी नहीं बुझेगी।

19 Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and stand at the gate of the people, through which the kings of Judah enter and through which they go out, and at all the gates of Jerusalem.

20 And say to them: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem who enter by these gates.

21 Thus says the Lord: Take heed to yourselves, and do not carry burdens on the Sabbath day, nor bring them in by the gates of Jerusalem.

22 Nor carry burdens out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they did not listen or incline their ears; instead, they stiffened their necks, so that they would not hear or receive correction.’”

 24 “Therefore, if you diligently listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and do not bring in loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy by not doing any work on it,

25 then kings and princes who sit on the throne of David will enter through the gates of this city, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city will be inhabited forever.

26 And they will come from the cities of Judah and from the outskirts of Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plains, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices and grain offerings and incense, bringing also sacrifices of thanksgiving to the house of the Lord.” 

27 But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to carry any load when you enter the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, which will consume the palaces of Jerusalem, and it will not be quenched.

19 Assim me disse o Senhor: Vai, e põe-te à porta dos filhos do povo, pela qual entram os reis de Judá, e pela qual saem; como também a todas as portas de Jerusalém.

20 E dize-lhes: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, vós, reis de Judá e todo o Judá, e todos os moradores de Jerusalém, que entrais por estas portas.

21 Assim diz o Senhor: Guardai as vossas almas, e não tragais cargas no dia de sábado, nem as introduzais pelas portas de Jerusalém.

22 Nem tireis cargas de vossas casas no dia de sábado, nem façais obra alguma: antes santificai o dia de sábado, como eu ordenei a vossos pais.

23 Mas não deram ouvidos, nem inclinaram as suas orelhas; antes endureceram a sua cerviz, para não ouvirem, e para não receberem correção.

24 Será pois que, se diligentemente me ouvirdes, diz o Senhor, não introduzindo cargas pelas portas desta cidade no dia de sábado, e santificardes o dia de sábado, não fazendo nele obra alguma;

25 Então entrarão pelas portas desta cidade reis e príncipes, assentados sobre o trono de Davi, andando em carros e montados em cavalos, eles e seus príncipes, os homens de Judá, e os moradores de Jerusalém: e esta cidade será para sempre habitada.

26 E virão das cidades de Judá, e dos contornos de Jerusalém, e da terra de Benjamim, e das planícies, e das montanhas, e do sul, trazendo holocaustos, e sacrifícios, e ofertas de manjares, e incenso, trazendo igualmente sacrifícios de louvores à casa do Senhor.

27 Mas, se não me derdes ouvidos, para santificardes o dia de sábado, e para não trazerdes carga alguma, quando entrardes pelas portas de Jerusalém no dia de sábado, então acenderei fogo nas suas portas o qual consumirá os palácios de Jerusalém, e não se apagará.
