The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 20
Pashur strikes Jeremiah and puts him in the stocks
Now Pashur son of Immer, the priest, who was appointed chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.
Then Pashur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the Lord.
The next day Pashur released Jeremiah from the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call you Pashur, but Magor-Missabib.
For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon and put them to death with the sword.’”
I will also give all the wealth of this city, and all its produce, and all its precious things; yes, all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
And you, Pashhur, and all the inhabitants of your house will go into captivity; and you will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you prophesied falsely.
You deceived me, O Lord, and I was deceived; you were stronger than I, and you prevailed: I am a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out; I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become a reproach to me, and a derision all day long.
Then I said, “I will not mention him, nor speak any more in his name.” But his word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it in, and I could not.
For I heard the whispering of many, terror on every side: “Denounce him! We will denounce him!” All my friends are at peace with me, waiting for me to stumble. They say, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail against him and take our revenge on him.”
But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will be utterly ashamed, because they have not acted wisely; their eternal disgrace will never be forgotten.
You, Lord Almighty, who test the righteous and see the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.
Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord; For he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
Cursed be the day on which I was born; may the day on which my mother bore me not be blessed.
Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, “A son is born to you,” making him very glad.
May this man be like the cities that the Lord destroyed without repentance; may he hear a cry in the morning and an outcry at midday.
Why did he not kill me from the womb? Or why was my mother not my grave? Or why was she not perpetually pregnant?
Why did I come forth from the womb to see toil and sorrow, and that my days should be consumed in confusion?
