 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 9

1 Oh, that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! Then I would weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people.

2 Oh, that I had in the desert a lodging place for travelers! Then I would leave my people and depart from them, for they are all adulterers, a band of traitors.

3 They extend their tongue like a bow for lies; they are strong in the land, but not for truth. They proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know me, says the Lord.

4 Beware each of his neighbor, and trust no brother; for every brother is a deceiver, and every neighbor goes about slandering.

5 They will mock each other, and they do not speak the truth; they teach their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves in wicked deeds.

6 Your dwelling place is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, declares the Lord.

7 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will refine and test them, for how can I deal with the daughter of my people?

8 Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceitfully. With their mouths they speak peace to their neighbors, but inwardly they plot against them.

9 Should I not punish them for these things?” declares the Lord. “Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this?

10 I will raise up weeping and lamentation for the mountains, and lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness; for they are burned up, and no one passes through them; the lowing of cattle is not heard anymore; from the birds of the air to the beasts they have wandered off and fled.

11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps of ruins, a dwelling place for dragons, and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, so that they will be forsaken.

12 Who is the wise man who understands this? And to whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, that he may declare it? Why has the land perished, and been burned like a desert, so that no one passes through it?

13 And the Lord said: Because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them, and have not listened to my voice, nor walked in it.

14 But they have walked after the stubbornness of their own hearts, and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them.

15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed this people with wormwood, and make them drink gall.

16 And I will scatter them among nations that have not known them or their fathers, and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.

17 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider, and call for mourning women, that they may come; and send for wise women, that they may come also.

18 Let them hasten and raise their lamentation over us; let our eyes overflow with tears, and our eyelids drip with water.

19 For a voice of weeping is heard from Zion: “How we are ruined! We are greatly ashamed, for we have forsaken the land, and they have overturned our dwellings.”

20 Hear therefore, you women, the word of the Lord, and let your ears receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters lamentation, and each one her neighbor lamentation.

21 For death has climbed through our windows and entered our palaces, to cut off the children from the streets and the young men from the public squares.

22 Say: Thus says the Lord: Even the corpses of men will lie like dung on the face of the field, and like sheaves behind the reaper, and there is no one to gather them.

23 Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches.

24 But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness in the earth; for in these things I delight, says the Lord.

25 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all the circumcised along with the uncircumcised:

26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all who cut the corners of their hair, who live in the desert; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

1 Oxalá a minha cabeça se tornasse em águas, e os meus olhos numa fonte de lágrimas! Então choraria de dia e de noite os mortos da filha do meu povo.

2 Oxalá tivesse no deserto uma estalagem de caminhantes! Então deixaria o meu povo, e me apartaria dele porque todos eles são adúlteros, e um bando de aleivosos.

3 E estendem a sua língua, como se fosse o seu arco, para a mentira; fortalecem-se na terra, mas não para a verdade, porque avançam de malícia em malícia, e a mim me não conhecem, diz o Senhor.

4 Guardai-vos cada um do seu amigo, e de irmão nenhum vos fieis; porque todo o irmão não faz mais do que enganar, e todo o amigo anda caluniando.

5 E zombará cada um do seu próximo, e não falam a verdade: ensinam a sua língua a falar a mentira; andam-se cansando em obras perversamente.

6 A tua habitação está no meio do engano: pelo engano recusam conhecer-me, diz o Senhor.

7 Portanto assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Eis que eu os fundirei e os provarei; porque, de que outra maneira procederia com a filha do meu povo?

8 Uma flecha mortífera é a língua deles; fala engano; com a sua boca fala cada um de paz com o seu companheiro, mas no seu interior arma-lhe ciladas.

9 Porventura por estas coisas não os visitaria? Diz o Senhor; ou não se vingaria a minha alma de gente tal como esta?

10 Pelos montes levantarei choro e pranto, e pelas pastagens do deserto lamentação; porque já estão queimadas, e ninguém passa por elas: nem já se ouve mugido de gado: desde as aves dos céus, até aos animais andaram vagueando, e fugiram.

11 E farei de Jerusalém montões de pedras, morada de dragões, e das cidades de Judá farei uma assolação, de sorte que fiquem desabilitadas.

12 Quem é o homem sábio, que entenda isto? E a quem falou a boca do Senhor, para que o possa anunciar? Por que razão pereceu a terra, e se queimou como deserto, de sorte que ninguém passa por ela?

13 E disse o Senhor: Porque deixaram a minha lei, que publiquei perante a sua face, e não deram ouvidos à minha voz, nem andaram nela.

14 Antes andaram após o propósito do seu coração, e após os baalins, que lhes ensinaram os seus pais.

15 Portanto assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Eis que darei de comer alosna a este povo e lhe darei a beber água de fel.

16 E os espalharei entre nações, que não conheceram nem eles nem seus pais, e mandarei a espada após eles, até que venha a consumi-los.

17 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Considerai, e chamai carpideiras, para que venham; e mandai procurar mulheres sábias, para que venham também.

18 E se apressem, e levantem o seu lamento sobre nós; e desfaçam-se os nossos olhos em lágrimas, e as nossas pálpebras destilem águas.

19 Porque uma voz de pranto se ouviu de Sião: Como estamos arruinados! Estamos mui envergonhados, porque deixamos a terra, e eles transtornaram as nossas moradas.

20 Ouvi pois, vós, mulheres, a palavra do Senhor, e os vossos ouvidos recebam a palavra da sua boca: e ensinai o pranto a vossas filhas, e cada uma à sua companheira a lamentação.

21 Porque a morte subiu pelas nossas janelas, e entrou em nossos palácios, para exterminar das ruas as crianças, e os mancebos das praças.

22 Fala: Assim diz o Senhor: Até os cadáveres dos homens jazerão como esterco sobre a face do campo, e como gavela atrás do segador, e não há quem recolha.

23 Assim diz o Senhor: Não se glorie o sábio na sua sabedoria, nem se glorie o forte na sua força; não se glorie o rico nas suas riquezas.

24 Mas o que se gloriar glorie-se nisto: em me conhecer e saber que eu sou o Senhor, que faço beneficência, juízo e justiça na terra; porque destas coisas me agrado, diz o Senhor.

25 Eis que vêm dias, diz o Senhor, em que visitarei a todo o circuncidado com o incircunciso:

26 Ao Egito, e a Judá, e a Edom, e aos filhos de Amom, e a Moabe, e a todos os que cortam os cantos do seu  cabelo, que habitam no deserto; porque todas as nações são incircuncisas, e toda a casa de Israel é incircuncisa de coração.

5 तो फिर यरूशलेम के ये लोग क्यों मुँह मोड़कर लगातार धर्म छोड़ना चाहते हैं? वे धोखे में लगे रहते हैं; वे लौटने से मना करते हैं।

6 मैंने ध्यान से सुना: वे सही बात नहीं कहते; कोई भी अपनी बुराई पर पछतावा नहीं करता, यह कहते हुए कि, ‘मैंने क्या किया है?’ हर कोई अपने रास्ते पर चला गया, जैसे कोई घोड़ा लड़ाई में भागता है।

4 Say to them, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do people fall and not rise again? Do they turn away and not return?’

5 Why then does this people of Jerusalem turn away, with a continual apostasy? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.

6 I listened and heard: They do not speak what is right; no one repents of their wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Each one turned to his own course, like a horse charging into battle.

7 Even the stork in the sky knows its appointed times, and the turtledove, the crane, and the swallow observe the time of their migration; but my people do not know the judgment of the Lord.

8 How then can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us’?” Behold, the false pen of the scribes has labored in vain.

9 The wise men are put to shame, they are dismayed and taken captive; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord; what wisdom then do they have?

10 Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their lands to those who possess them; for from the least to the greatest, everyone is given to covetousness; from the prophet to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

11 They have healed the wound of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.

12 Are they ashamed of committing abomination? No, they are not at all ashamed, nor do they know what shame is. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall, and they shall stumble at the time when I visit them, says the Lord.

13 Surely I will gather them, says the Lord: there are no more grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf has withered; even that which I gave them will go away from them.

14 Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there; for the Lord our God has silenced us and given us gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord.

15 Peace was expected, but no good came; a time of healing, but behold, terror.

16 From Dan comes the snorting of his horses; the whole land trembles at the sound of the neighing of his mighty men; they come and devour the land and its abundance, the city and those who dwell in it.

17 For behold, I will send among you serpents and vipers, against which there is no enchantment, and they shall bite you, says the Lord.

18 Oh, that I could find comfort in my sorrow! My heart is faint within me.

19 Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a far country: Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her king not in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with carved images, with strange vanities?

20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

21 I am broken by the wound of the daughter of my people; I go about mourning; astonishment has seized me.

22 Is there no ointment in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the daughter of my people?

5 Por que pois se desvia este povo de Jerusalém, com uma apostasia contínua? Retém o engano, não quer voltar.

6 Eu escutei e ouvi: não falam o que é reto, ninguém há que se arrependa da sua maldade, dizendo: Que fiz eu? Cada um se devia na sua carreira, como um cavalo que arremete com ímpeto na batalha.

7 Até a cegonha no céu conhece os seus tempos determinados; e a rola, e o grou e a andorinha observam o tempo da sua arribação: mas o meu povo não conhece o juízo do Senhor.

8 Como pois dizeis: Nós somos sábios, e a lei do Senhor está conosco? Eis que em vão tem trabalhado a falsa pena dos escribas.

9 Os sábios foram envergonhados, foram espantados e presos: eis que rejeitaram a palavra do Senhor; que sabedoria pois teriam?

10 Portanto darei suas mulheres a outros, e as suas herdades a quem as possua; porque desde o menor até ao maior cada um deles se dá à avareza: desde o profeta até ao sacerdote, cada um deles usa de falsidade.

11 E curam a ferida da filha de meu povo levianamente, dizendo: Paz, paz quando não há paz.

12 Porventura envergonham-se de cometer abominação? Pelo contrário, de maneira nenhuma se envergonham, nem sabem que coisa é envergonhar-se; Portanto cairão entre os que caem e tropeçarão no tempo em que eu os visitar, diz o Senhor.

13 Certamente os apanharei, diz o Senhor: já não há uvas na vide, nem figos na figueira, e a folha caiu; e até aquilo mesmo que lhes dei se irá deles.

14 Por que nos assentamos ainda? Juntai-vos e entremos nas cidades fortes, e ali estejamos calados; pois já o Senhor nosso Deus nos fez calar e nos deu a beber água de fel; porquanto pecamos contra o Senhor.

15 Espera-se a paz, e não há bem: o tempo da cura, e eis o terror.

16 Já desde Dã se ouve o resfolegar dos seus cavalos: toda a terra treme à voz dos rinchos dos seus fortes; e vêm, e devoram a terra e a sua abundância, a cidade e os que habitam nela.

17 Porque eis que enviarei entre vós serpentes e basiliscos, contra os quais não há encantamento, e vos morderão, diz o Senhor.

18 Oh! Se eu pudesse consolar-me na minha tristeza! O meu coração desfalece em mim.

19 Eis a voz do clamor da filha do meu povo de terra mui remota: Não está o Senhor em Sião? Não está nela o seu rei? Por que me provocaram à ira com as imagens de escultura, com vaidades estranhas?

20 Passou a sega, findou o verão, e nós não estamos salvos.

21 Estou quebrantado pela ferida da filha do meu povo: ando de luto: o espanto se apoderou de mim.

22 Porventura não há ungüento em Gileade? Ou não há lá médico? Por que pois não teve lugar a cura da filha do meu povo?

1 At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its princes, the bones of the priests, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be taken out of their graves.

2 They will be displayed before the sun, the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they loved and served, whom they followed, whom they sought, and before whom they bowed down. They will not be gathered or buried; they will be like dung on the face of the earth.

3 Death will be chosen rather than life for all the remnant of this evil race who remain in the places where I have driven them, declares the Lord Almighty.

2 E expô-los-ão ao sol, e à lua, e a todo o exército do céu, a quem tinham amado e a quem tinham servido, e após quem tinham ido, e a quem tinham buscado e diante de quem se tinham prostrado: não serão recolhidos nem sepultados; serão como esterco sobre a face da terra.

3 E escolher-se-á antes a morte do que a vida de todo o resto dos que restarem desta raça maligna, que ficar nos lugares onde os lancei, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

1 यहोवा की तरफ़ से यिर्मयाह के पास यह बात आई:

2 यहोवा के घर के गेट पर खड़े हो जाओ, और वहाँ यह बात सुनाओ, और कहो: हे यहूदा के सब लोगों, जो इन गेटों से यहोवा की पूजा करने आते हो, यहोवा की बात सुनो।

3 सेनाओं का यहोवा, इस्राएल का परमेश्वर यह कहता है: अपने रास्ते और अपने काम सुधारो, और मैं तुम्हें इस जगह पर रहने दूँगा।

8 देखो, तुम धोखा देने वाली बातों पर भरोसा करते हो जिनसे कोई फ़ायदा नहीं होता।

9 तुम चोरी करोगे, खून करोगे, व्यभिचार करोगे, झूठी कसम खाओगे, बाल के लिए धूप जलाओगे, और दूसरे देवताओं के पीछे चलोगे जिन्हें तुम नहीं जानते,

10 तब तुम इस घर में, जो मेरे नाम से जाना जाता है, मेरे सामने आकर खड़े होगे, और कहोगे, “हम आज़ाद हैं; हम ये सब घिनौने काम कर सकते हैं?”

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:

2 Stand at the gate of the house of the Lord, and proclaim there this word, and say: Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah, who enter through these gates to worship the Lord.

3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this place.

4 Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!”

5 But if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice between a man and his neighbor,

6 If you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place, nor follow other gods to your own harm,

7 I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

8 Behold, you trust in deceptive words that are of no profit.

9 You will steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known,

10 Then you will come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are free; we may do all these abominations?”

11 Is this house, which is called by my name, a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen this, declares the Lord.

12 But go now to my place that was in Zion, where I first caused my name to dwell, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.

13 Now therefore, because you do all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you, rising early and speaking, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer,

14 I will do also to this house, which is called by my name, in which you trust, and to this place that I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

15 And I will cast you out of my presence, as I cast out all your brothers, the whole generation of Ephraim.

16 Therefore, do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them, nor intercede with me, for I will not listen to you.

17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven, and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.

19 Is it I whom they are provoking to anger, declares the Lord, and not themselves, to the shame of their faces?

20 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and beast, and on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.

21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat meat.

22 For I did not speak to your fathers on the day that I brought you out of the land of Egypt, nor did I command them anything concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices.

23 But this I commanded them, saying, “Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.”

24 But they did not listen or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil hearts; and they went backward and not forward.

25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, sending them daily and early.

26 But they did not listen to me or incline their ears; instead, they stiffened their necks and did worse than their ancestors.

27 Therefore, you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; you shall call to them, but they will not answer you.

28 And you shall say to them: “This is a people who do not listen to the voice of the Lord their God and do not accept correction; truth has perished and has been torn from their mouths.”

29 Cut off the hair of your head and throw it away, and raise your lamentation on high; for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

30 For the children of Judah have done what is evil in my eyes, declares the Lord: they have set their abominations in the house that is called by my name, to defile it.

31 And they built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I never commanded, nor did it enter my heart.

32 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no longer be called Topheth, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter; and they will bury in Topheth, because there will be no more room.

33 And the corpses of this people will be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away.

34 And I will cause the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem; for the land will become desolate.

1 A palavra que foi dita a Jeremias pelo Senhor, dizendo:

2 Põe-te à porta da casa do Senhor, e proclama ali esta palavra, e dize: Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, todos de Judá, os que entrais por estas portas, para adorardes ao Senhor.

3 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Melhorai os vossos caminhos e as vossas obras, e vos farei habitar neste lugar.

4 Não vos fieis em palavras falsas, dizendo: Templo do Senhor, templo do Senhor, templo do Senhor é este.

5 Mas, se deveras melhorardes os vossos caminhos e as vossas obras, se deveras fizerdes juízo entre um homem e entre o seu companheiro,

6 Se não oprimirdes o estrangeiro, e o órfão, e a viúva, nem derramardes sangue inocente neste lugar, nem andardes após outros deuses para vosso próprio mal,

7 Eu vos farei habitar neste lugar, na terra que dei a vossos pais, de século em século.

8 Eis que vós confiais em palavras falsas, que para nada são proveitosas.

9 Furtareis vós, e matareis, e cometereis adultério, e jurareis falsamente, e queimareis incenso a Baal, e andareis após outros deuses que não conhecestes,

10 E então vireis, e vos poreis diante de mim nesta casa, que se chama pelo meu nome, e direis: Somos livres, podemos fazer todas estas abominações?

14 Farei também a esta casa, que se chama pelo meu nome, na qual confiais, e a este lugar, que vos dei a vós e a vossos pais, como fiz a Silo.

15 E vos arrojarei da minha presença, como arrojei a todos os vossos irmãos, a toda a geração de Efraim.

16 Tu pois não ores por este povo, nem levantes por ele clamor ou oração, nem me importunes, porque eu não te ouvirei.

17 Não vês tu o que andam fazendo nas cidades de Judá, e nas ruas de Jerusalém?

18 Os filhos apanham a lenha, e os pais acendem o fogo, e as mulheres amassam a farinha, para fazerem bolos à rainha dos Céus, e oferecem libações a outros deuses, para me provocarem à ira.

19 Acaso é a mim que eles provocam à ira, diz o Senhor, e não antes a si mesmos, para confusão dos seus rostos?

20 Portanto assim diz o Senhor Jeová: Eis que a minha ira e o meu furor se derramarão sobre este lugar, sobre os homens e sobre os animais, e sobre as árvores do campo, e sobre os frutos da terra; e acender-se-á, e não se apagará.

21 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Ajuntai os vossos holocaustos aos vossos sacrifícios, e comei carne.

22 Porque nunca falei a vossos pais, no dia em que vos tirei da terra do Egito, nem lhes ordenei coisa alguma acerca de holocaustos ou sacrifícios.

23 Mas isto lhes ordenei, dizendo: Dai ouvidos à minha voz, e eu serei o vosso Deus, e vós sereis o meu povo; e andai em todo o caminho que eu vos mandar, para que vos vá bem.

24 Mas não ouviram, nem inclinaram os seus ouvidos, mas andaram nos seus próprios conselhos, no propósito do seu coração malvado; e andaram para trás, e não para diante.

25 Desde o dia em que vossos pais saíram da terra do Egito, até hoje enviei-vos todos os meus servos, os profetas, todos os dias madrugando e enviando-os.

26 Mas não me deram ouvidos, nem inclinaram os seus ouvidos, mas endureceram a sua cerviz, e fizeram pior do que seus pais.

27 Dir-lhes-ás pois todas estas palavras, mas não te darão ouvidos; chama-los-ás, mas não te responderão.

28 E lhes dirás: Uma gente é esta que não dá ouvidos à voz do Senhor seu Deus e não aceita a correção: já pereceu a verdade, e se arrancou da sua boca.

29 Corta o cabelo da tua cabeça e lança-o fora, e levanta o teu pranto sobre as alturas; porque já o Senhor rejeitou e desamparou a geração do seu furor;

30 Porque os filhos de Judá fizeram o que parece mal aos meus olhos, diz o Senhor: puseram as suas abominações na casa que se chama pelo meu nome, para a contaminarem.

31 E edificaram os altos de Tofete, que está no vale do filho de Hinom para queimarem no fogo a seus filhos e a suas filhas; o que nunca ordenei, nem me subiu ao coração.

32 Portanto eis que vêm dias, diz o Senhor, em que nunca se chamará mais Tofete, nem vale do filho de Hinom, mas o vale da matança; e enterrarão em Tofete, por não haver mais lugar.

33 E os cadáveres deste povo servirão de pasto às aves dos céus e aos animais da terra; e ninguém os espantará.

34 E farei cessar nas cidades de Judá, e nas ruas de Jerusalém, a voz de folguedo, e a voz de alegria, a voz de esposo e a voz de esposa; porque a terra se tornará em desolação

1 Flee for your lives, children of Benjamin, from the midst of Jerusalem; and sound the trumpet in Tekoa, and lift up the torch upon Beth-haccherem; for out of the north lies evil and great destruction.

2 I will leave the beautiful and delicate daughter of Zion desolate.

3 Shepherds will come to her with their flocks; they will pitch tents against her all around, and each will pasture in his own place.

4 Prepare war against her, arise, and let us go up at midday; Woe to us! For the day is drawing to a close, the shadows of evening are drawing near.

5 Arise, and let us go up at night, and destroy her palaces.

6 For thus says the Lord of hosts: Cut down trees, and raise siege works against Jerusalem; This is the city that must be visited; only oppression is in the midst of it.

7 As a spring brings forth its waters, so it brings forth its wickedness; violence and destruction are heard in it; sickness and wounds are continually before me.

8 Correct yourself, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from you, lest I make you a desolation and an uninhabited land.

9 Thus says the Lord of hosts: They shall diligently glean the remnant of Israel like a vine; turn your hand, like the grape gatherer, to the baskets.

10 To whom shall I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and they cannot hear; behold, the word of the Lord is to them a shameful thing; they have no delight in it.

11 Therefore I am filled with the wrath of the Lord; I am weary of holding it in; I will pour it out on the children in the streets, and on the gatherings of the young men together; for even husband and wife shall be taken captive, and the old man with him who is full of days.

12 Their houses shall pass to others, their lands and their wives together; for I will stretch out my hand against the inhabitants of this land, says the Lord.

13 For from the least of them even to the greatest, everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.

14 They have healed the wound of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.

15 Are they ashamed of committing abomination? No, they are not at all ashamed, nor do they know what shame is. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; in the time when I visit them they shall stumble, says the Lord.

16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”

17 “I also set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen.’”

18 “Therefore hear, you nations; and know, you congregation, what is being done among them!

19 “Hear, you earth! Behold, I will bring evil upon this people, the very fruit of their thoughts; because they have not heeded my words, and they have rejected my law.

20 “Why then will incense from Sheba come to me, and the finest aromatic cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings do not please me, nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.”

21 Therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will set stumbling blocks before this people, and fathers and sons together shall stumble over them; neighbor and companion shall perish.

22 Thus says the Lord: Behold, a people shall come from the land of the north, and a great nation shall arise from the sides of the land.

23 They shall bring bow and spear; they are cruel, and shall show no mercy; their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride on horses, arrayed like men of war against you, O daughter of Zion.

24 We have heard of their report, our hands have grown weak; anguish has seized us, and pains like those of a woman in labor.

25 Do not go out into the field, nor walk on the road; for the sword of the enemy and terror are all around.

26 O daughter of my people, put on sackcloth, and roll in ashes; mourn as for an only son, a bitter lamentation; For the destroyer will come upon us quickly.

27 I have set you as a watchtower among my people, as a stronghold, so that you may know and examine their ways.

28 They are all the most rebellious, and they go about murmuring; they are as hard as bronze and iron; they all walk corruptly.

29 The bellows are burned, the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain the refiner melts so diligently, for the wicked are not uprooted.

30 They will be called rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.

1 Fugi para salvação vossa, filhos de Benjamim, do meio de Jerusalém; e tocai a buzina em Técoa, e levantai o facho sobre Bete-Haquerem: porque da banda do norte espreita um mal e um grande quebrantamento.

2 A formosa e delicada, a filha de Sião, eu deixarei desolada.

3 A ela virão pastores com os seus rebanhos; levantarão contra ela tendas em redor, e cada um apascentará no seu lugar.

4 Preparai a guerra contra ela, levantai-vos, e subamos ao pino do meio-dia: Ai de nós! Que já declina o dia, que já se vão estendendo as sombras da tarde.

5 Levantai-vos, e subamos a noite, e destruamos os seus palácios.

6 Porque assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Cortai árvores, e levantai tranqueiras contra Jerusalém; esta é a cidade que há de ser visitada; só opressão há no meio dela.

7 Como a fonte produz as suas águas, assim ela produz a sua malícia: violência e estrago se ouvem nela; enfermidade e feridas há diante de mim continuadamente.

8 Corrige-te, ó Jerusalém, para que a minha alma não se aparte de ti, para que não te torne em assolação e terra não habitada.

9 Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Diligentemente respigarão os resíduos de Israel como uma vinha: torna a tua mão, como o vindimador, aos cestos.

10 A quem falarei e testemunharei, para que ouça? Eis que os seus ouvidos estão incircuncisos, e não podem ouvir; eis que a palavra do Senhor é para eles coisa vergonhosa; não gostam dela.

11 Pelo que estou cheio do furor do Senhor; estou cansado de o conter: derramá-lo-ei sobre os meninos pelas ruas, e nas reuniões dos mancebos juntamente: porque até o marido com a mulher serão presos, e o velho com o que está cheio de dias.

12 E as suas casas passarão a outros, herdades e mulheres juntamente: porque estenderei a minha mão contra os habitantes desta terra, diz o Senhor.

13 Porque desde o menor deles até ao maior, cada um se dá à avareza; e desde o profeta até ao sacerdote, cada um usa de falsidade.

14 E curam a ferida da filha do meu povo levianamente, dizendo: Paz, paz; quando não há paz.

15 Porventura envergonham-se de cometer abominação? Pelo contrário, de maneira nenhuma se envergonham, nem tampouco sabem que coisa é envergonhar-se; Portanto cairão entre os que caem; no tempo em que eu os visitar tropeçarão, diz o Senhor.

16 Assim diz o Senhor: Ponde-vos nos caminhos, e vede, e perguntai pelas veredas antigas, qual é o bom caminho, e andai por ele; e achareis descanso para as vossas almas: Mas eles dizem: Não andaremos.

17 Também pus atalaias sobre vós, dizendo: Estai atentos à voz da buzina: Mas dizem: Não escutaremos.

18 Portanto ouvi, vós, nações; e informa-te tu, ó congregação, do que se faz entre eles!

19 Ouve tu, ó terra! Eis que eu trarei mal sobre este povo, o próprio fruto dos seus pensamentos; porque não estão atentos às minhas palavras, e rejeitam a minha lei.

20 Para que pois me virá o incenso de Sabá e a melhor cana aromática de terras remotas? Vossos holocaustos não me agradam, nem me são suaves os vossos sacrifícios.

21 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Eis que armarei tropeços a este povo, e tropeçarão neles pais e filhos juntamente: o vizinho e o seu companheiro perecerão.

22 Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que um povo vem da terra do norte, e uma grande nação se levantará das bandas da terra.

23 Arco e lança trarão; eles são cruéis, e não usarão de misericórdia; a sua voz rugirá como o mar, e em cavalos irão montados, dispostos como homens de guerra contra ti, ó filha de Sião.

24 Ouvimos a sua fama, afrouxaram-se as nossas mãos; angústia nos tomou, e dores como de parturiente.

25 Não saias ao campo, nem andeis pelo caminho; porque espada do inimigo e espanto há em redor.

26 Ó filha do meu povo, cinge-te de saco, e revolve-te na cinza: pranteia como por um filho único, pranto de amarguras; porque presto virá o destruidor sobre nós.

27 Por torre de guarda te pus entre o meu povo, por fortaleza, para que soubesses e examinasses o seu caminho.

28 Todos eles são os mais rebeldes, e andam murmurando; são duros como bronze e ferro: todos eles andam corruptamente.

29 Já o fole se queimou, o chumbo se consumiu com o fogo: em vão vai fundindo o fundidor tão diligentemente, pois os maus não são arrancados.

28 वे मोटे हो जाते हैं, वे चिकने हो जाते हैं, और बुरे लोगों के कामों से भी आगे निकल जाते हैं; वे अनाथों का इंसाफ़ नहीं करते, ताकि वे कामयाब हो सकें; न ही वे ज़रूरतमंदों का इंसाफ़ करते हैं। 

29 क्या मुझे इन चीज़ों की सज़ा नहीं देनी चाहिए? भगवान कहता है; क्या मुझे ऐसे देश से अपना बदला नहीं लेना चाहिए? 

30 देश में एक भयानक और डरावना काम हुआ है।

31 भविष्यवक्ता झूठी भविष्यवाणी करते हैं, और पुजारी अपने अधिकार से राज करते हैं; और मेरे लोगों को ऐसा ही पसंद है। आखिर में तुम क्या करोगे?

 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 5

1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find anyone who deals honestly or seeks the truth, I will forgive them.

2 Though they say, “As the Lord lives,” they are swearing falsely.

3 Lord, do you not see the truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you consumed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than rock; they refused to return.

4 But I said, “Surely these are worthless; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the law of their God.”

5 I will go to the nobles and speak to them, for they know the way of the Lord, the law of their God. But these have unanimously broken the yoke and torn off the bonds.

6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the deserts will ravage them; a leopard watches over their cities; whoever goes out of them will be torn to pieces; for their transgressions are many, their backslidings are many.

7 How can I forgive you for this? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by those who are not gods. After I have fed them to the full, they have committed adultery and have assembled in bands in the houses of prostitutes.

8 Like well-fed horses, they rise early in the morning, each neighing after his neighbor’s wife.

9 Should I not punish these things, declares the Lord, or should I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?

10 Go up to their walls and tear them down (but do not make a complete destruction); take away their battlements, for they are not the Lord’s.

11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, declares the Lord.

12 They deny the Lord and say, “He is not the Lord; no evil will befall us; we will not see sword or famine.”

13 Even the prophets will be like wind, for the word is not in them; so it will happen to them.

14 Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of hosts, says: “Because you have spoken such a word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and they shall be consumed.

15 Behold, I will bring a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel, declares the Lord, a mighty nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor will you understand what they say.

16 Their quiver is like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors.”

17 They will devour your harvest and your bread, which your sons and daughters would have eaten; they will devour your sheep and your cattle; they will devour your vines and your fig trees; they will destroy your fortified cities in which you trusted with the sword.

18 Yet even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a complete end of you.

19 And when you say, “Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?” you shall answer them, “As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so you will serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.”

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah:

21 “Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.

22 Do you not fear me?” declares the Lord. Will you not fear me, who set the sand as a boundary for the sea, an everlasting ordinance that it cannot pass? Though its waves rise, they will not prevail; though they roar, they will not pass over it.

23 But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have rebelled and gone away.

24 And they do not say in their hearts, “Let us now fear the Lord our God, who gives rain, both the early and the latter rain, in its season, and keeps the appointed weeks of the harvest for us.”

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good from you.

26 For wicked men are found among my people; everyone lies in wait as fowlers lie in wait; they set traps to catch men.

27 Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and rich.

28 They grow fat, they become sleek, and they surpass even the deeds of the wicked; they do not judge the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; nor do they judge the right of the needy.

29 Should I not punish these things? declares the Lord; should I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?

30 An appalling and horrible thing has been done in the land.

31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end?

Dai voltas às ruas de Jerusalém, e vede agora, e informai-vos, e buscai pelas suas praças, a ver se achais alguém, ou se há um homem que pratique a justiça ou busque a verdade, e eu lhe perdoarei.

2 E ainda que digam: Vive o Senhor, decerto falsamente juram.

3 Ah Senhor, não atentam os teus olhos para a verdade? Feriste-os, e não lhes doeu: consumiste-os, e não quiseram receber a correção: endureceram as suas faces mais do que uma rocha; não quiseram voltar.

4 Eu porém disse: Deveras estes são uns pobres: são loucos, pois não sabem o caminho do Senhor, o juízo do seu Deus.

5 Irei aos grandes e falarei com eles; porque eles sabem o caminho do Senhor, o juízo do seu Deus; mas estes de comum acordo quebraram o jugo, e romperam as ataduras.

6 Por isso um leão do bosque os feriu, um lobo dos desertos os assolará: um leopardo vigia contra as suas cidades: qualquer que sair delas será despedaçado; porque as suas transgressões se multiplicaram, multiplicaram-se as suas apostasias.

7 Como, vendo isto, te perdoaria? Teus filhos me deixam a mim e juram pelos que não são deuses: depois de os eu ter fartado, adulteraram, e em casa de meretrizes se ajuntaram em bandos.

8 Como cavalos bem fartos, levantam-se pela manhã, rinchando cada um à mulher do seu companheiro.

9 Deixaria eu de castigar estas coisas, diz o Senhor, ou não se vingaria a minha alma de uma nação como esta?

10 Subi aos seus muros, e destruí-os (não façais porém uma destruição final); tirai as suas ameias; porque não são do Senhor.

11 Porque aleivosissimamente se houveram contra mim a casa de Israel e a casa de Judá, diz o Senhor.

12 Negam ao Senhor, e dizem: não é ele; e: Nenhum mal nos sobrevirá; não veremos espada nem fome.

13 E até os profetas se farão como vento, porque a palavra não está com eles: assim lhes sucederá a eles mesmos.

14 Portanto assim diz o Senhor, o Deus dos Exércitos: Porquanto disseste tal palavra, eis que converterei as minhas palavras na tua boca em fogo, e a este povo em lenha, e eles serão consumidos.

15 Eis que trarei sobre vós uma nação de longe, ó casa de Israel, diz o Senhor: uma nação robusta, uma nação antiquíssima, uma nação cuja língua ignorarás; e não entenderás o que ela falar.

16 A sua aljava é como uma sepultura aberta: todos eles são valentes.

17 E comerão a tua sega e o teu pão, que haviam de comer teus filhos e tuas filhas; comerão as tuas ovelhas e as tuas vacas; comerão a tua vide e a tua figueira: as tuas cidades fortes, em que confiavas, abate-las-á à espada.

18 Contudo, ainda naqueles dias, diz o Senhor, não farei de vós uma destruição final.

19 E sucederá que, quando disserdes: Por que nos fez o Senhor nosso Deus todas estas coisas? Então lhes dirás: Como vós me deixastes e servistes a deuses estranhos na vossa terra, assim servireis a estrangeiros, em terra que não é vossa.

20 Anunciai isto na casa de Jacó, e fazei-o ouvir em Judá, dizendo:

21 Ouvi agora isto, ó povo louco e sem coração, que tendes olhos e não vedes, que tendes ouvidos e não ouvis.

22 Não me temereis a mim? Diz o Senhor; não temereis diante de mim, que pus a areia por limite ao mar, por ordenança eterna, que ele não transpassará? Ainda que se levantem as suas ondas, não prevalecerão; ainda que bramem, não a transpassarão.

23 Mas este povo é de coração rebelde e pertinaz: rebelaram-se e foram-se.

24 E não dizem no seu coração: Temamos agora ao Senhor nosso Deus, que dá chuva, a temporã e a tardia, a seu tempo; e as semanas determinadas da sega nos conserva.

25 As vossas iniqüidades desviam estas coisas, e os vossos pecados afastam de vós o bem.

26 Porque ímpios se acham entre o meu povo: cada um anda espiando, como se acaçapam os passarinheiros; armam laços perniciosos, com que prendem os homens.

27 Como uma gaiola cheia de pássaros, são as suas casas cheias de engano; por isso se engrandeceram e enriqueceram.

28 Engordam-se, nãlisam-se, e ultrapassam até os feitos dos malignos; não julgam a causa dos órfãos, para que eles prosperem: nem julgam o direito dos necessitados.

29 Não castigaria eu estas coisas? Diz o Senhor; não se vingaria a minha alma de uma nação como esta?

30 Coisa espantosa e horrenda se anda fazendo na terra.

31 Os profetas profetizam falsamente, e os sacerdotes dominam pelas mãos deles, e o meu povo assim o deseja: e que fareis no fim disto?

5 यहूदा में घोषणा करो, और यरूशलेम में घोषणा करो, और कहो: देश में तुरही फूँको! ऊँची आवाज़ में पुकारो, आओ हम गढ़वाले नगरों में प्रवेश करें!

6 सिय्योन के लिए झण्डा खड़ा करो, अपने उद्धार के लिए भागो, रुको मत; क्योंकि मैं उत्तर दिशा से विपत्ति और बड़ा विनाश लाने वाला हूँ।

7 एक सिंह अपनी झाड़ी से निकल आया है, वह जातियों का नाश करनेवाला है; वह निकल पड़ा है, वह अपने स्थान से निकलकर तुम्हारे देश को उजाड़ने के लिए निकल पड़ा है; ताकि तुम्हारे नगर नष्ट हो जाएँ, और उनमें कोई न रहे।

8 इसलिए कमर में टाट बाँधो, विलाप करो और हाय-हाय करो; क्योंकि यहोवा का भयंकर क्रोध हम पर से हटा नहीं है।

9 और उस समय ऐसा होगा, यहोवा की यह वाणी है, कि राजा और हाकिमों के हृदय टूट जाएंगे; और याजक चकित होंगे, और भविष्यद्वक्ता अचम्भा करेंगे। 

10 तब मैंने कहा, “हाय, हे प्रभु परमेश्वर! तूने सचमुच इस प्रजा और यरूशलेम पर बड़ा भ्रम फैलाया है, यह कहकर कि ‘तुम्हें शान्ति मिलेगी,’ क्योंकि तलवार उनके प्राणों को भी छेदती है।

11 उस समय इस प्रजा और यरूशलेम से कहा जाएगा, ‘जंगल की ऊँचाइयों से एक सूखी हवा मेरे लोगों की बेटी के मार्ग पर आई है, न कि उसे फटकने के लिए, न उसे शुद्ध करने के लिए।’

12 मेरे पास एक हवा आएगी, एक बड़ी और प्रचंड हवा: अब मैं उनके विरुद्ध न्यायदंड भी सुनाऊँगा।

13 देख, वह बादलों के समान और उसके रथ बवंडर के समान आएँगे; उसके घोड़े उकाबों से भी तेज़ होंगे। हाय! हम पर! क्योंकि हम नष्ट हो गए हैं!

14 हे यरूशलेम, अपने हृदय से दुष्टता धो डाल, कि तू बच जाए; तेरे बुरे विचार कब तक तेरे भीतर बने रहेंगे?

5 Announce in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: Sound the trumpet in the land! Cry aloud, saying: Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities!

6 Raise a banner for Zion, flee for your salvation, do not stop; for I am bringing evil from the north, and great destruction.

7 A lion has already come up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he has set out, he has gone out from his place to make your land a desolation; so that your cities will be destroyed, and no one will dwell in them.

8 Therefore gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament, and wail; for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.

9 And it shall come to pass at that time, says the Lord, that the heart of the king and the heart of the princes shall fail; And the priests will be astonished, and the prophets will marvel.

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly you have brought great delusion upon this people and upon Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall have peace,’ for the sword pierces even to their soul.

11 At that time it shall be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A dry wind from the heights of the desert has come upon the path of the daughter of my people, not to winnow her, nor to cleanse her.’

12 A wind shall come to me, a great and vehement wind: now also I will pronounce judgments against them.

13 Behold, he shall come up like clouds, and his chariots like a whirlwind; his horses shall be swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are destroyed!

14 Wash your heart of wickedness, O Jerusalem, that you may be saved; how long shall your evil thoughts remain within you?

15 For your voice proclaims from Dan, and makes calamity heard from the mountains of Ephraim.

16 Proclaim this to the nations, make it heard against Jerusalem: that watchmen come from a distant land, and they will raise their voice against the cities of Judah.

17 Like watchmen of a field, they surround her; because she has rebelled against me, says the Lord.

18 Your way and your deeds have brought these things upon you; this is your iniquity, which is so bitter it reaches to your heart.

19 Oh my bowels, my bowels! I am wounded in my heart! My heart roars; I cannot keep silent; for you, O my soul, have heard the sound of the trumpet and the alarm of war.

20 Breakdown upon breakdown is proclaimed: for the whole land is now destroyed; suddenly my tents are destroyed, and my curtains in a moment.

21 How long will I see the banner and hear the trumpet's voice?

22 Surely my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are senseless children, without understanding; they are skilled in doing evil, but in doing good they know nothing.

23 I looked at the earth, and it was desolate and empty; and at the heavens, and they had no light.

24 ​​I looked at the mountains, and they were trembling; all the hills were quaking.

25 I looked, and there was no one; every bird in the sky had fled.

26 I saw that the fertile land was a desert, and all its cities were overthrown before the Lord, before the fierceness of his anger.

27 For this is what the Lord says: “This whole land will be desolate, but I will not completely destroy it.”

28 Therefore the land will mourn, and the heavens above will grow dark; For I have said it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented nor will I turn back from it.

29 At the sound of the horsemen and archers all the cities fled; they entered through the clouds, and climbed the cliffs: all the cities were left forsaken, and no one dwells in them anymore.

30 Now, therefore, what will you do, O desolate one? Though you clothe yourself in crimson, though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint around your eyes with antimony, in vain you would make yourself beautiful: lovers despise you, and seek to take your life.

31 For I hear a voice like that of a woman in labor, anguish like that of one in labor with her first child; the voice of the daughter of Zion, gasping, stretching out her hands, saying: Oh! Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.

5 Anunciai em Judá, e fazei ouvir em Jerusalém, e dizei: Tocai a trombeta na terra! Gritai em alta voz, dizendo: Ajuntai-vos, e entremos nas cidades fortes!

6 Arvorai a bandeira para Sião, fugi para salvação vossa, não pareis; porque eu trago um mal do norte, e uma grande destruição.

7 Já um leão subiu da sua ramada, e um destruidor das nações; ele já partiu, e saiu do seu lugar para fazer da tua terra uma desolação; a fim de que as tuas cidades sejam destruídas, e ninguém habite nelas.

8 Por isso cingi-vos de sacos, lamentai, e uivai; porque o ardor da ira do Senhor não se desviou de nós.

9 E sucederá naquele tempo, diz o Senhor, que se desfará o coração do rei e o coração dos príncipes; e os sacerdotes pasmarão, e os profetas se maravilharão.

10 Então disse eu: Ah! Senhor Jeová! Verdadeiramente trouxeste grande ilusão a este povo e a Jerusalém, dizendo: Tereis paz; pois a espada penetra-lhe até à alma.

11 Naquele tempo se dirá a este povo e a Jerusalém: Um vento seco das alturas do deserto veio ao caminho da filha do meu povo, não para padejar, nem para a limpar.

12 Um vento me virá a mim, de grande veemência: agora também eu pronunciarei juízos contra eles.

13 Eis que virá subindo como nuvens e os seus carros como a tormenta; os seus cavalos serão mais ligeiros do que as águias. Ai de nós! Que somos assolados!

14 Lava o teu coração da malícia, ó Jerusalém, para que sejas salva; até quando permanecerão no meio de ti os teus maus pensamentos?

15 Porque a tua voz anuncia desde Dã e faz ouvir a calamidade desde o monte de Efraim.

16 Proclamai isto às nações, fazei-o ouvir contra Jerusalém: que vigias vêm de uma terra remota, e levantarão a sua voz contra as cidades de Judá.

17 Como os guardas de um campo, eles a rodeiam; porquanto ela se rebelou contra mim, diz o Senhor.

18 O teu caminho e as tuas obras te trouxeram estas coisas: esta é a tua iniqüidade, que de tão amargosa te chega até ao coração.

19 Ah entranhas minhas, entranhas minhas! Estou ferido no meu coração! O meu coração ruge; não me posso calar; porque tu, ó minha alma, ouviste o som da trombeta e o alarido da guerra.

20 Quebranto sobre quebranto se apregoa: porque já toda a terra está destruída; de repente foram destruídas as minhas tendas, e as minhas cortinas num momento.

21 Até quando verei a bandeira, e ouvirei a voz da trombeta?

22 Deveras o meu povo está louco, já me não conhece; são filhos néscios, e não entendidos; sábios são para mal fazer, mas para bem fazer nada sabem.

23 Observei a terra, e eis que estava assolada e vazia; e os céus, e não tinham a sua luz.

24 Observei os montes, e eis que estavam tremendo; e todos os outeiros estremeciam.

25 Observei e vi que homem nenhum havia e que todas as aves do céu tinham fugido.

26 Vi também que a terra fértil era um deserto, e que todas as suas cidades estavam derrubadas diante do Senhor, diante do furor da sua ira.

27 Porque assim diz o Senhor: Toda esta terra será assolada: de todo porém a não consumirei.

28 Por isto lamentará a terra, e os céus em cima se enegrecerão; porquanto assim o disse, assim o propus, e não me arrependi nem me desviarei disso.

29 Ao clamor dos cavaleiros e dos flecheiros fugiram todas as cidades; entraram pelas nuvens, e treparam pelos penhascos: todas as cidades ficaram desamparadas, e já ninguém habita nelas.

30 Agora, pois que farás, ó assolada? Ainda que te vistas de carmesim, ainda que te adornes com enfeites de ouro, ainda que te pintes em volta dos teus olhos com o antimônio, debalde te farias bela: os amantes te desprezam, e procuram tirar-te a vida.

31 Porquanto ouço uma voz como de mulher que está de parto, uma angústia como da que está com dores do primeiro filho; a voz da filha de Sião, ofegante, que estende as suas mãos, dizendo: Oh! Ai de mim agora! Porque a minha alma desmaia diante dos assassinos.
