 The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 5

1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find anyone who deals honestly or seeks the truth, I will forgive them.

2 Though they say, “As the Lord lives,” they are swearing falsely.

3 Lord, do you not see the truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you consumed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than rock; they refused to return.

4 But I said, “Surely these are worthless; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the law of their God.”

5 I will go to the nobles and speak to them, for they know the way of the Lord, the law of their God. But these have unanimously broken the yoke and torn off the bonds.

6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the deserts will ravage them; a leopard watches over their cities; whoever goes out of them will be torn to pieces; for their transgressions are many, their backslidings are many.

7 How can I forgive you for this? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by those who are not gods. After I have fed them to the full, they have committed adultery and have assembled in bands in the houses of prostitutes.

8 Like well-fed horses, they rise early in the morning, each neighing after his neighbor’s wife.

9 Should I not punish these things, declares the Lord, or should I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?

10 Go up to their walls and tear them down (but do not make a complete destruction); take away their battlements, for they are not the Lord’s.

11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, declares the Lord.

12 They deny the Lord and say, “He is not the Lord; no evil will befall us; we will not see sword or famine.”

13 Even the prophets will be like wind, for the word is not in them; so it will happen to them.

14 Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of hosts, says: “Because you have spoken such a word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and they shall be consumed.

15 Behold, I will bring a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel, declares the Lord, a mighty nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor will you understand what they say.

16 Their quiver is like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors.”

17 They will devour your harvest and your bread, which your sons and daughters would have eaten; they will devour your sheep and your cattle; they will devour your vines and your fig trees; they will destroy your fortified cities in which you trusted with the sword.

18 Yet even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a complete end of you.

19 And when you say, “Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?” you shall answer them, “As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so you will serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.”

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah:

21 “Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.

22 Do you not fear me?” declares the Lord. Will you not fear me, who set the sand as a boundary for the sea, an everlasting ordinance that it cannot pass? Though its waves rise, they will not prevail; though they roar, they will not pass over it.

23 But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart; they have rebelled and gone away.

24 And they do not say in their hearts, “Let us now fear the Lord our God, who gives rain, both the early and the latter rain, in its season, and keeps the appointed weeks of the harvest for us.”

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good from you.

26 For wicked men are found among my people; everyone lies in wait as fowlers lie in wait; they set traps to catch men.

27 Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and rich.

28 They grow fat, they become sleek, and they surpass even the deeds of the wicked; they do not judge the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; nor do they judge the right of the needy.

29 Should I not punish these things? declares the Lord; should I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?

30 An appalling and horrible thing has been done in the land.

31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end?

Dai voltas às ruas de Jerusalém, e vede agora, e informai-vos, e buscai pelas suas praças, a ver se achais alguém, ou se há um homem que pratique a justiça ou busque a verdade, e eu lhe perdoarei.

2 E ainda que digam: Vive o Senhor, decerto falsamente juram.

3 Ah Senhor, não atentam os teus olhos para a verdade? Feriste-os, e não lhes doeu: consumiste-os, e não quiseram receber a correção: endureceram as suas faces mais do que uma rocha; não quiseram voltar.

4 Eu porém disse: Deveras estes são uns pobres: são loucos, pois não sabem o caminho do Senhor, o juízo do seu Deus.

5 Irei aos grandes e falarei com eles; porque eles sabem o caminho do Senhor, o juízo do seu Deus; mas estes de comum acordo quebraram o jugo, e romperam as ataduras.

6 Por isso um leão do bosque os feriu, um lobo dos desertos os assolará: um leopardo vigia contra as suas cidades: qualquer que sair delas será despedaçado; porque as suas transgressões se multiplicaram, multiplicaram-se as suas apostasias.

7 Como, vendo isto, te perdoaria? Teus filhos me deixam a mim e juram pelos que não são deuses: depois de os eu ter fartado, adulteraram, e em casa de meretrizes se ajuntaram em bandos.

8 Como cavalos bem fartos, levantam-se pela manhã, rinchando cada um à mulher do seu companheiro.

9 Deixaria eu de castigar estas coisas, diz o Senhor, ou não se vingaria a minha alma de uma nação como esta?

10 Subi aos seus muros, e destruí-os (não façais porém uma destruição final); tirai as suas ameias; porque não são do Senhor.

11 Porque aleivosissimamente se houveram contra mim a casa de Israel e a casa de Judá, diz o Senhor.

12 Negam ao Senhor, e dizem: não é ele; e: Nenhum mal nos sobrevirá; não veremos espada nem fome.

13 E até os profetas se farão como vento, porque a palavra não está com eles: assim lhes sucederá a eles mesmos.

14 Portanto assim diz o Senhor, o Deus dos Exércitos: Porquanto disseste tal palavra, eis que converterei as minhas palavras na tua boca em fogo, e a este povo em lenha, e eles serão consumidos.

15 Eis que trarei sobre vós uma nação de longe, ó casa de Israel, diz o Senhor: uma nação robusta, uma nação antiquíssima, uma nação cuja língua ignorarás; e não entenderás o que ela falar.

16 A sua aljava é como uma sepultura aberta: todos eles são valentes.

17 E comerão a tua sega e o teu pão, que haviam de comer teus filhos e tuas filhas; comerão as tuas ovelhas e as tuas vacas; comerão a tua vide e a tua figueira: as tuas cidades fortes, em que confiavas, abate-las-á à espada.

18 Contudo, ainda naqueles dias, diz o Senhor, não farei de vós uma destruição final.

19 E sucederá que, quando disserdes: Por que nos fez o Senhor nosso Deus todas estas coisas? Então lhes dirás: Como vós me deixastes e servistes a deuses estranhos na vossa terra, assim servireis a estrangeiros, em terra que não é vossa.

20 Anunciai isto na casa de Jacó, e fazei-o ouvir em Judá, dizendo:

21 Ouvi agora isto, ó povo louco e sem coração, que tendes olhos e não vedes, que tendes ouvidos e não ouvis.

22 Não me temereis a mim? Diz o Senhor; não temereis diante de mim, que pus a areia por limite ao mar, por ordenança eterna, que ele não transpassará? Ainda que se levantem as suas ondas, não prevalecerão; ainda que bramem, não a transpassarão.

23 Mas este povo é de coração rebelde e pertinaz: rebelaram-se e foram-se.

24 E não dizem no seu coração: Temamos agora ao Senhor nosso Deus, que dá chuva, a temporã e a tardia, a seu tempo; e as semanas determinadas da sega nos conserva.

25 As vossas iniqüidades desviam estas coisas, e os vossos pecados afastam de vós o bem.

26 Porque ímpios se acham entre o meu povo: cada um anda espiando, como se acaçapam os passarinheiros; armam laços perniciosos, com que prendem os homens.

27 Como uma gaiola cheia de pássaros, são as suas casas cheias de engano; por isso se engrandeceram e enriqueceram.

28 Engordam-se, nãlisam-se, e ultrapassam até os feitos dos malignos; não julgam a causa dos órfãos, para que eles prosperem: nem julgam o direito dos necessitados.

29 Não castigaria eu estas coisas? Diz o Senhor; não se vingaria a minha alma de uma nação como esta?

30 Coisa espantosa e horrenda se anda fazendo na terra.

31 Os profetas profetizam falsamente, e os sacerdotes dominam pelas mãos deles, e o meu povo assim o deseja: e que fareis no fim disto?

5 यहूदा में घोषणा करो, और यरूशलेम में घोषणा करो, और कहो: देश में तुरही फूँको! ऊँची आवाज़ में पुकारो, आओ हम गढ़वाले नगरों में प्रवेश करें!

6 सिय्योन के लिए झण्डा खड़ा करो, अपने उद्धार के लिए भागो, रुको मत; क्योंकि मैं उत्तर दिशा से विपत्ति और बड़ा विनाश लाने वाला हूँ।

11 उस समय इस प्रजा और यरूशलेम से कहा जाएगा, ‘जंगल की ऊँचाइयों से एक सूखी हवा मेरे लोगों की बेटी के मार्ग पर आई है, न कि उसे फटकने के लिए, न उसे शुद्ध करने के लिए।’

12 मेरे पास एक हवा आएगी, एक बड़ी और प्रचंड हवा: अब मैं उनके विरुद्ध न्यायदंड भी सुनाऊँगा।

5 Announce in Judah, and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say: Sound the trumpet in the land! Cry aloud, saying: Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities!

6 Raise a banner for Zion, flee for your salvation, do not stop; for I am bringing evil from the north, and great destruction.

7 A lion has already come up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he has set out, he has gone out from his place to make your land a desolation; so that your cities will be destroyed, and no one will dwell in them.

8 Therefore gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament, and wail; for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.

9 And it shall come to pass at that time, says the Lord, that the heart of the king and the heart of the princes shall fail; And the priests will be astonished, and the prophets will marvel.

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly you have brought great delusion upon this people and upon Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall have peace,’ for the sword pierces even to their soul.

11 At that time it shall be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A dry wind from the heights of the desert has come upon the path of the daughter of my people, not to winnow her, nor to cleanse her.’

12 A wind shall come to me, a great and vehement wind: now also I will pronounce judgments against them.

13 Behold, he shall come up like clouds, and his chariots like a whirlwind; his horses shall be swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are destroyed!

14 Wash your heart of wickedness, O Jerusalem, that you may be saved; how long shall your evil thoughts remain within you?

15 For your voice proclaims from Dan, and makes calamity heard from the mountains of Ephraim.

16 Proclaim this to the nations, make it heard against Jerusalem: that watchmen come from a distant land, and they will raise their voice against the cities of Judah.

17 Like watchmen of a field, they surround her; because she has rebelled against me, says the Lord.

18 Your way and your deeds have brought these things upon you; this is your iniquity, which is so bitter it reaches to your heart.

19 Oh my bowels, my bowels! I am wounded in my heart! My heart roars; I cannot keep silent; for you, O my soul, have heard the sound of the trumpet and the alarm of war.

20 Breakdown upon breakdown is proclaimed: for the whole land is now destroyed; suddenly my tents are destroyed, and my curtains in a moment.

21 How long will I see the banner and hear the trumpet's voice?

22 Surely my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are senseless children, without understanding; they are skilled in doing evil, but in doing good they know nothing.

23 I looked at the earth, and it was desolate and empty; and at the heavens, and they had no light.

24 ​​I looked at the mountains, and they were trembling; all the hills were quaking.

25 I looked, and there was no one; every bird in the sky had fled.

26 I saw that the fertile land was a desert, and all its cities were overthrown before the Lord, before the fierceness of his anger.

27 For this is what the Lord says: “This whole land will be desolate, but I will not completely destroy it.”

28 Therefore the land will mourn, and the heavens above will grow dark; For I have said it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented nor will I turn back from it.

29 At the sound of the horsemen and archers all the cities fled; they entered through the clouds, and climbed the cliffs: all the cities were left forsaken, and no one dwells in them anymore.

30 Now, therefore, what will you do, O desolate one? Though you clothe yourself in crimson, though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint around your eyes with antimony, in vain you would make yourself beautiful: lovers despise you, and seek to take your life.

31 For I hear a voice like that of a woman in labor, anguish like that of one in labor with her first child; the voice of the daughter of Zion, gasping, stretching out her hands, saying: Oh! Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.

5 Anunciai em Judá, e fazei ouvir em Jerusalém, e dizei: Tocai a trombeta na terra! Gritai em alta voz, dizendo: Ajuntai-vos, e entremos nas cidades fortes!

6 Arvorai a bandeira para Sião, fugi para salvação vossa, não pareis; porque eu trago um mal do norte, e uma grande destruição.

7 Já um leão subiu da sua ramada, e um destruidor das nações; ele já partiu, e saiu do seu lugar para fazer da tua terra uma desolação; a fim de que as tuas cidades sejam destruídas, e ninguém habite nelas.

8 Por isso cingi-vos de sacos, lamentai, e uivai; porque o ardor da ira do Senhor não se desviou de nós.

9 E sucederá naquele tempo, diz o Senhor, que se desfará o coração do rei e o coração dos príncipes; e os sacerdotes pasmarão, e os profetas se maravilharão.

19 Ah entranhas minhas, entranhas minhas! Estou ferido no meu coração! O meu coração ruge; não me posso calar; porque tu, ó minha alma, ouviste o som da trombeta e o alarido da guerra.

20 Quebranto sobre quebranto se apregoa: porque já toda a terra está destruída; de repente foram destruídas as minhas tendas, e as minhas cortinas num momento.

22 Deveras o meu povo está louco, já me não conhece; são filhos néscios, e não entendidos; sábios são para mal fazer, mas para bem fazer nada sabem.

23 Observei a terra, e eis que estava assolada e vazia; e os céus, e não tinham a sua luz.

24 Observei os montes, e eis que estavam tremendo; e todos os outeiros estremeciam.

25 Observei e vi que homem nenhum havia e que todas as aves do céu tinham fugido.

26 Vi também que a terra fértil era um deserto, e que todas as suas cidades estavam derrubadas diante do Senhor, diante do furor da sua ira.

27 Porque assim diz o Senhor: Toda esta terra será assolada: de todo porém a não consumirei.

28 Por isto lamentará a terra, e os céus em cima se enegrecerão; porquanto assim o disse, assim o propus, e não me arrependi nem me desviarei disso.

29 Ao clamor dos cavaleiros e dos flecheiros fugiram todas as cidades; entraram pelas nuvens, e treparam pelos penhascos: todas as cidades ficaram desamparadas, e já ninguém habita nelas.

30 Agora, pois que farás, ó assolada? Ainda que te vistas de carmesim, ainda que te adornes com enfeites de ouro, ainda que te pintes em volta dos teus olhos com o antimônio, debalde te farias bela: os amantes te desprezam, e procuram tirar-te a vida.

31 Porquanto ouço uma voz como de mulher que está de parto, uma angústia como da que está com dores do primeiro filho; a voz da filha de Sião, ofegante, que estende as suas mãos, dizendo: Oh! Ai de mim agora! Porque a minha alma desmaia diante dos assassinos.

1 If you return, O Israel, declares the Lord, you will return to me; and if you remove your abominations from before me, you will no longer wander about.

2 And you will swear: “As the Lord lives, in truth, in justice, and in righteousness!” And in him the nations will bless themselves, and in him they will glory.

3 For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: “Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns.

4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my indignation go forth like fire and burn with no one to quench it, because of the wickedness of your deeds.”

6 The Lord said in the days of King Josiah: “Have you seen what rebellious Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every green tree and has prostituted herself there.

7 After she had done all this, I said, ‘Return to me,’ but she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

8 When I sent her away because of all this—because rebellious Israel had committed adultery—and gave her a certificate of divorce, her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; she went away and prostituted herself.

9 Because of the fame of her prostitution, she defiled the land; she committed adultery with stone and wood.” 

10 Yet even after all this, her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me with a sincere heart, but deceitfully, declares the Lord.

11 Then the Lord said to me, “Rebellious Israel has justified her soul more than treacherous Judah.

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say, ‘Return, rebellious Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will not cause my anger to fall upon you, for I am merciful,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will not keep my anger forever.’

13 Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the Lord your God, and have spread out your ways to strangers under every green tree, and have not listened to my voice, declares the Lord.

14 Return, rebellious children, declares the Lord; for I will betroth you, and take you, one from a city and two from a generation; And I will bring you to Zion.

15 And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 And it shall come to pass, when you multiply and increase in the land, in those days, says the Lord, that they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord,” nor shall it come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it; this shall not be done anymore.

17 In that day they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem; and they shall no more walk after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel; and they shall come together from the land of the north, to the land which I gave as an inheritance to your fathers.

19 But I said, “How shall I set you among the children, and give you the desirable land, the excellent inheritance of the armies of the nations?” And I said, “You will call me Father, and you will not turn away from me.”

20 “Surely, as a woman treacherously departs from her husband, so treacherously have you dealt with me, O house of Israel,” says the Lord.

21 A voice was heard on the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel; for they have perverted their way, and have forgotten the Lord their God.

22 Return, O rebellious children, I will heal your rebellions. Behold, we come to you; for you are the Lord our God.

23 Surely in vain is the hope of the hills and the multitude of mountains; truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.

24 For confusion has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth: their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

25 We lie in our shame; And we are covered with shame, because we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth until this day, and we have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God.

2 Lift up your eyes to the heights and see: where have you not prostituted yourself? You sat by the roads for them, like an Arab in the desert; you have defiled the land with your lewdness and wickedness.

3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; but you have the forehead of a prostitute and refuse to be ashamed.

4 At least from now on you will not call to me, saying, “My Father, you are the guide of my youth”?

5 Will he keep his anger forever? Or will he keep it continually? Behold, you have said and done evil things, and you remain in them.

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: I remember the devotion of your youth and the love of your betrothal, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.

3 Then Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured them were held guilty; disaster came upon them,’ declares the Lord.

4 “Hear the word of the Lord, you descendants of Jacob, all you families of the house of Israel:

5 This is what the Lord says: ‘What injustice did your ancestors find in me, that they went far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless.

6 They did not say, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt?”’” Who led us through the desert, through a land of wastelands and pits, through a land of drought and the shadow of death, through a land where no one traveled, and in which no man dwelt.

7 And I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and its produce; but when you entered it, you defiled my land and made my inheritance an abomination.

8 The priests did not say, “Where is the Lord?” And those who handled the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after that which is of no profit.

9 Therefore I will yet contend with you, declares the Lord; and even with your children’s children I will contend.

10 For pass over to the islands of Kittim and see; and send to Kedar and consider carefully, and see if anything like this has happened.

11 Has any nation ever exchanged its gods, even though they are not gods? Yet my people have exchanged their glory for worthless idols.

12 Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with horror, declares the Lord.

13 My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

14 Is Israel a servant, a slave born in the house? Why then has it become a prey?

15 Young lions roared at it; they raised their voices. They made its land a desolation; its cities were burned with fire, and no one lives in them.

16 Even the people of Noph and Ticpenes broke the crown of your head.

17 Are you not seeking this for yourself, by forsaking the Lord your God when he leads you on the way? 

18 Now then, what does it matter to you to go to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? And what does it matter to you to go to Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

19 Your wickedness will punish you, and your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing for you to forsake the Lord your God, and not to have the fear of me with you, says the Lord God of hosts.

20 When I had long ago broken your yoke and torn off your bonds, you said, “I will never transgress again”; yet on every high hill and under every green tree you have been crouching and prostrating yourself.

21 I myself planted you as a choice vine, a seed entirely faithful; how then have you turned into a degenerate plant, a strange vine?

22 Therefore, though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

23 How can you say, “I am not defiled; I have not followed the Baals”? Consider your way in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift camel, twisting your paths.

24 You are a wild donkey, accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in the desire of your soul. Who can resist you? Those who seek you will not grow weary; in your month they will find you.

25 Keep your feet from going barefoot and your throat from being thirsty. But you say, “There is no hope,” for I love strangers, and after them I will go.

26 As a thief is put to shame when he is caught, so the house of Israel is put to shame. They, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,

27 Who say to wood, “You are my father,” and to stone, “You gave birth to me”; for they have turned their backs on me, and not their faces, but in the time of their trouble they will say, “Arise, and deliver us.”

28 Where then are your gods, which you made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can deliver you in the time of your trouble; for your gods, O Judah, are as numerous as your cities.

29 Why do you contend with me? You have all transgressed against me, says the Lord.

30 In vain I have punished your children; they have not accepted correction; your sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.

31 O generation! Consider the word of the Lord: Have I been a desert to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why then does my people say, “We have forsaken ourselves from you; we will never see you again”?

32 Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me for countless days.

33 How you adorn your path to seek love! So that you have even taught the wicked your ways.

34 Even on the edges of your garments is found the blood of the innocent and needy: I ​​did not dig to find it, for it is evident in all these things.

35 Yet you say, “I am innocent; surely his anger has turned away from me.” Behold, I will enter into judgment with you, because you say, “I have not sinned.”

36 Why do you turn aside so much, changing your way? You will also be ashamed of Egypt, as you were ashamed of Assyria.

37 You will also go out from there with your hands on your head; for the Lord has rejected your confidences, and you will not prosper with them.

1 E veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

2 Vai, e clama aos ouvidos de Jerusalém, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Lembro-me de ti, da beneficência da tua mocidade, e do amor dos teus desposórios, quando andavas após mim no deserto, numa terra que se não semeava.

3 Então Israel era santidade para o Senhor, e as primícias da sua novidade: todos os que o devoravam eram tidos por culpados; o mal vinha sobre eles, diz o Senhor:

4 Ouvi a palavra do Senhor, ó casa de Jacó, e todas as famílias da casa de Israel:

5 Assim diz o Senhor: Que injustiça acharam vossos pais em mim, para se afastarem de mim, indo após a vaidade, e tornando-se levianos?

6 E não disseram: Onde está o Senhor, que nos fez subir da terra do Egito? Que nos guiou através do deserto, por uma terra de charnecas e de covas por uma terra de sequidão e sombra de morte, por uma terra em que ninguém transitava, e na qual não morava homem algum.

7 E eu vos introduzi numa terra fértil, para comerdes o seu fruto e o seu bem: mas quando nela entrastes contaminastes a minha terra, e da minha herança fizeste uma abominação.

8 Os sacerdotes não disseram: Onde está o Senhor? E os que tratavam da lei não me conheceram, e os pastores prevaricaram contra mim, e os profetas profetizaram por Baal e andaram após o que é de nenhum proveito.

9 Portanto ainda pleitearei convosco, diz o Senhor; e até com os filhos de vossos filhos pleitearei.

10 Porquanto, passai as ilhas de Quitim, e vede; e enviai a Quedar, e atentai bem, e vede se sucedeu coisa semelhante.

11 Houve alguma nação que trocasse os seus deuses, posto não serem deuses? Todavia o meu povo trocou a sua glória pelo que é de nenhum proveito.

12 Espantai-vos disto, ó céus, e horrorizai-vos! Ficai verdadeiramente desolados, diz o Senhor.

13 Porque o meu povo fez duas maldades: A mim me deixaram, o manancial de águas vivas, e cavaram cisternas, cisternas rotas, que não retêm as águas.

14 Acaso é Israel um servo? Ou um escravo nascido em casa? Por que pois veio a ser presa?

15 Os filhos de leão bramaram sobre ele, levantaram a sua voz; e puseram a sua terra em assolação; as suas cidades se queimaram, e ninguém habita nelas.

16 Até os filhos de Nofe e de Tacpenes te quebraram o alto da cabeça.

17 Porventura não procuras isto para ti mesmo, deixando o Senhor teu Deus no tempo em que ele te guia pelo caminho?

18 Agora pois, que te importa a ti o caminho do Egito, para beberes as águas de Sior? E que te importa a ti o caminho da Assíria, para beberes as águas do rio?

19 A tua malícia te castigará, e as tuas apostasias te repreenderão: sabe pois e vê, que mau e quão amargo é deixares ao Senhor teu Deus, e não teres o meu temor contigo, diz o Senhor Jeová dos Exércitos.

20 Quando eu já há muito quebrava o teu jugo, e rompia as tuas ataduras, dizias tu: Nunca mais transgredirei; contudo em todo o outeiro alto e de baixo de toda a árvore verde te andas encurvado e corrompendo.

21 Eu mesmo te plantei como vide excelente, uma semente inteiramente fiel: como pois te tornaste para mim uma planta degenerada, de vide estranha?

22 Pelo que, ainda que te laves com salitre, e amontoes sabão, a tua iniqüidade estará gravada diante de mim, diz o Senhor Jeová.

23 Como dizes logo: Não estou contaminado nem andei após os baalins? Vê o teu caminho no vale, conhece o que fizeste: dromedária ligeira és, que anda torcendo os seus caminhos.

24 Jumenta montês, acostumada ao deserto e que, conforme o desejo da sua alma sorve o vento; quem impediria o seu encontro? Todos os que buscarem, não se cansarão; no mês dela a acharão.

25 Evita que o teu pé ande descalço, e que a tua garganta tenha sede: mas tu dizes: Não há esperança; não, porque amo os estranhos, e após eles andarei.

26 Como fica confundido o ladrão quando o apanham, assim se confundem os da casa de Israel; eles, os seus reis, os seus príncipes, e os seus sacerdotes, e os seus profetas,

27 Que dizem ao pau: Tu és meu pai; e à pedra: Tu me geraste; porque me viraram as costas, e não o rosto mas no tempo do seu aperto dirão: Levanta-te, e livra-nos.

28 Onde pois estão os teus deuses, que fizeste para ti? Que se levantem, se te podem livrar no tempo da tua tribulação: porque os teus deuses, ó Judá, são numerosos como as tuas cidades.

29 Por que disputais comigo? Todos vós transgredistes contra mim, diz o Senhor.

30 Em vão castiguei os vossos filhos; eles não aceitaram a correção; a vossa espada devorou os vossos profetas como um leão destruidor.

31 Ó geração! Considerai vós a palavra do Senhor: Porventura tenho eu sido para Israel um deserto? Ou uma terra da mais espessa escuridão? Por que pois diz o meu povo: Desligamo-nos de ti; nunca mais a ti veremos?

32 Porventura esquece-se a virgem dos seus enfeites, ou a esposa dos seus cendais? Todavia o meu povo se esqueceu de mim por inumeráveis dias.

33 Como ornamentas o teu caminho, para buscares o amor! De sorte que até às malignas ensinaste os teus caminhos.

34 Até nas orlas dos teus vestidos se achou o sangue das almas dos inocentes e necessitados: não cavei para o achar, pois se vê em todas estas coisas.

35 E ainda dizes: Eu estou inocente; certamente a sua ira se desviou de mim. Eis que entrarei em juízo contigo, porquanto dizes: Não pequei.

36 Por que te desvias tanto, mudando o teu caminho? Também do Egito serás envergonhada, como foste envergonhada da Assíria.

37 Também daquele sairás com as mãos sobre a tua cabeça; porque o Senhor rejeitou as tuas confianças, e não prosperarás com elas.

1 बिन्यामीन देश के अनातोत में रहने वाले याजकों में से एक, हिल्किय्याह के पुत्र यिर्मयाह के वचन:

2 यहोवा का वचन आमोन के पुत्र यहूदा के राजा योशिय्याह के दिनों में, उसके राज्य के तेरहवें वर्ष में, उसके पास पहुँचा।

3 यह वचन यहूदा के राजा योशिय्याह के पुत्र यहोयाकीम के दिनों में भी उसके पास पहुँचा, और योशिय्याह के पुत्र यहूदा के राजा सिदकिय्याह के राज्य के ग्यारहवें वर्ष के अंत तक, अर्थात् पाँचवें महीने में यरूशलेम के बंदी बना लिए जाने तक, उसके पास पहुँचा।

4 तब यहोवा का वचन मेरे पास पहुँचा:

5 “गर्भ में रचने से पहले ही मैंने तुम्हें जाना, और जन्म लेने से पहले ही मैंने तुम्हें पवित्र किया; मैंने तुम्हें जातियों के लिए भविष्यद्वक्ता नियुक्त किया।”

The Calling and First Vision of Jeremiah

1 The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

2 The word of the Lord came to him in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

3 It also came to him in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, until Jerusalem was taken captive in the fifth month.

4 Then the word of the Lord came to me:

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

6 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You shall go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.

8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “Now I have put my words in your mouth.

10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

11 The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see a branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

13 The word of the Lord came to me a second time: “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and its face is toward the north.”

14 Then the Lord said to me, “Out of the north disaster will break out on all the inhabitants of the land.”

15 “See, I am summoning all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” declares the Lord, “and they will come and each one will set up his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around, and against all the cities of Judah.

16 I will pronounce my judgments against them because of all their wickedness; for they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.

17 “Therefore, gird up your loins and arise and tell them all that I command you. Do not be afraid before them, for I will make you fearless in their presence.”

18 For behold, I have made you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land.

19 They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.

1 Palavras de Jeremias, filho de Hilquias, dos sacerdotes que estavam em Anatote, na terra de Benjamim:

2 Ao qual veio a palavra do Senhor, nos dias de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, no décimo terceiro ano do seu reinado.

3 E lhe veio também nos dias de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, até ao fim do ano undécimo de Zedequias, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, até que Jerusalém foi levada em cativeiro no quinto mês.

4 Assim veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:

5 Antes que te formasse no ventre te conheci, e antes que saísses da madre te santifiquei; às nações te dei por profeta.

6 Então disse eu: Ah Senhor Jeová! Eis que não sei falar; porque sou uma criança.

7 Mas o Senhor me disse: Não digas: eu sou uma criança; porque aonde quer que eu te enviar, irás; e tudo quanto te mandar dirás.

8 Não temas diante deles; porque eu sou contigo para te livrar, diz o Senhor.

9 E estendeu o Senhor a sua mão, e tocou-me na boca; e disse-me o Senhor: Eis que ponho as minhas palavras na tua boca.

10 Olha, ponho-te neste dia sobre as nações, e sobre os reinos, para arrancares, e para derrubares, e para destruíres, e para arruinares; e também para edificares e para plantares.

11 Ainda veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo: Que é que vês, Jeremias? E eu disse: Vejo uma vara de amendoeira.

12 E disse-me o Senhor: Viste bem; porque eu velo sobre a minha palavra para a cumprir.

13 E veio a mim a palavra do Senhor segunda vez, dizendo: Que é que vês? E eu disse: Vejo uma panela a ferver, cuja face está para a banda do norte.

14 E disse-me o Senhor: Do norte se descobrirá o mal sobre todos os habitantes da terra.

15 Porque eis que eu convoco todas as famílias dos reinos do norte, diz o Senhor; e virão, e cada um porá o seu trono à entrada das portas de Jerusalém, e contra todos os seus muros em redor e contra todas as cidades de Judá.

16 E eu pronunciarei contra eles os meus juízos, por causa de toda a sua malícia; pois me deixaram a mim, e queimaram incenso a deuses estranhos, e se encurvaram diante das obras das suas mãos.

17 Tu pois cinge os teus lombos, e levanta-te, e dize-lhes tudo quanto eu te mandar; não desanimes diante deles, porque eu farei com que não temas na sua presença.

18 Porque, eis que te ponho hoje por cidade forte, e por coluna de ferro, e por muros de bronze, contra toda a terra; contra os reis de Judá, contra os seus príncipes, contra os seus sacerdotes, e contra o povo da terra.

19 E pelejarão contra ti, mas não prevalecerão contra ti; porque eu sou contigo, diz o Senhor, para te livrar.
